I blame Bryan Singer on this one. Spacey is one of the greatest actors ever. His role in House of Cards resembles more what Lex Luthor is all about than his stupid performance in Superman. There are many suitable actors to play that character, but if the director insists on the comical version of Luthor, they're gonna suck regardless.

Yeah, the casting and script was just awful. Too many references from the first Reeve film which made it feel so cliche. If Singer had decided to think outside of the box and done his own thing then he would have got some credit.

Lex Luthor has always being bald and exactly like you described, but not that fit. He first appeared in Action Comics #23 and at first had ginger hair, but later an accident made him bald. The blame for the 'buffon Luthor' was 'Superman: The Movie' producer Pierre Spengler. Director Richard Donner wanted Luthor to be a serious menacing villain, but Spengler was demanding him to be a funny character with Telly Savalas in the role. In fact the executive producers, Alexander & Ilya Salkind, had not much clue nor any respect for Superman who to them was as much a comicbook character as Popeye The Sailor, and wanted the film to be a comedy, which Donner fought mightily against. He conceded on Luthor to save the Superman character from being portrayed for laughs. At the end, when the movie was released and became a blockbuster film, the producers fired Donner thus he couldn't complete 'Superman II' which was already 80% in the can, they hired Richard Lester and he added 'funny' scenes like the guy talking on the phone booth while being blown away by the villains superbreath and the ridiculous traffic symbols fighting.

I would give the role to Ed Harris. He's too short though. Luthor should be someone tall enough to look at Superman in the eye. This guy is perfect to me:

    Fuck you, Magus!

Superman III and IV were pretty terrible though, although I like the scene in 3 where Superman fights Clark.

    OUR BRAND IS IN CRISIS!!!

The debut of the second Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had 23.2 million views during its first 24 hours. That's almost seven million LESS than the debut of the first trailer and teaser. It also came way, way, way far from the 61 million views Captain America: Civil War trailer obtained last week during its first 24 hours. This clearly defines the HUGE difference between the DC brand and the Marvel brand and the reason the Zack Snyder movie was moved out from an original May release in direct competition with the Marvel film and will be debuting in a traditionally 'dead season' of March.

Come on, IV is worse. III is just about watchable on a wet, windy day.

Superman III was cringe worthy, and uninteresting, but at least competent. Superman IV had a more interesting plot with more action but was a badly directed film.

Reeve himself admitted that III and IV were BAD.

No wonder if both critics & fans were saying the same and both films bombed. There was no reason to deny it.

I just don't get why Batman wanted to kill Superman. Why did they fall out? They both stand for truth and justice, etc.

You need to read 'The Dark Knight Returns' by Frank Miller or watch the animated version from were that clip was taken.

Superman 3 was ludicrous but entertaining. Superman 4 was just terrible.

Ok, so I read about their history and it makes sense now.

“I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one that beat you.” This is a great quote, btw, and the scene in The Dark Knight Returns is excellent.

    No it's not.
It's the old trailer with less than 5 seconds of 'Turkish Airlines' inserted into it for some bizarre reason that only the Turks can explain.

Rainmaker being strange again....but then, this trailer does have a few seconds of Turkish Airlines inserted in the middle for some inexplicable reason...
