Exactly, they're just aiming to counter whatever the opponent does before they even do it.

    James Toney = counterpuncher

Vic Darchynian = not a counterpuncher

    LOL

to me it describes someone whose strategy will usually be to get the other guy to initiate

not necessarily someone who will choose to do this depending on his opponent (sugar Ray Leonard was SOMETIMES a counterpuncher, but not always, for example) but someone who will more often than not look to work off whatever his opponent does offensively rather than initiate himself... James Toney, for example

Toney, Jersey Joe Walcott, Donaire... these are guys I would describe as counterpunchers... they overwhelmingly apply that strategy in their fights

REED Subscribes to your Definition of a "Counterpuncher"...It's NOT as Hard to Ascertain as Some Make It...

To REED, a "Counterpuncher" is a Guy that PREFERS his Opponent Leading, Simple as That...Sure, the "Counterpuncher" May Be FORCED Into or Find it ADVANTAGEOUS to LEAD, but Those Instances are Rare...

I was about to say, for me a counterpuncher is just a guy who doesn't lead, simple as that.

They feed off and react to what the other guy does, be it directly parrying and countering, anticipating shots, or punching between punches. Just not leading basically, waiting for the other guy to make the first move.

Foreman Did WELL Against Guys who Initiated, but it's NOT like He was Much of a Backfoot Fighter Either...Foreman was a BIG, STRONG, AGGRESSIVE Guy who Looked to IMPOSE Those Traits on his Opponents, in Most Cases...

Foreman was PRIMARILY about Moving Forward, Cutting the Ring Off, Jabs & Punches Off the Jab...There Wasn't A Lot of WAITING, on Foreman's Behalf, Particularly PRE-Jimmy Young Foreman...

A TRUE Counterpuncher Almost ACCEPTS a Defensive Posture in an Attempt to LURE his Opponent into Leading...Foreman NEVER Really Compromised Himself or RISKED It, in that Way...

but since only lunatics like Frazier ever did that when he was in his prime, he was forced to walk them down and go after them, initiate the action

'Sluggers' do tend to thrive & struggle against the same type of guys as say Donaire & Toney tho. If you were looking at the thing from a 'structural' rock paper scissors perspective you'd probably group them together and call them 'impact punchers' or something. I don't think, say, Donaire and Rigondeax really have anything in common stylistically, but you'll see people call both 'counter punchers'. I don't think its a very useful concept. Just voyzin' my ping.

I would think of Rigondeaux as the old "Boxer-Puncher", frankly... He CAN counterpunch really well, but he's essentially a guy who likes to box and create his openings that way

Rigondeaux DOES Struggle When Forced to LEAD Though...

The LULLS in Rigondeaux Fights are Directly Linked w/WHEN his Opponent is TAMED & Stops Initiating...1nce the Onus is On Rigondeaux to LEAD, his Bouts Typically Become BORING...

And to strengthen an already strong argument, Foreman said {Foreman said..nobody else did} that he avoided Jerry Quarry as Quarry had a CP'g style that George didn't like the idea of facing.

No, whether that is bullshit or not, it at least obliquely refers to Georges own opinion that he himself was not a Counter-Puncher in any sense of the word.

A counter puncher is one who punches in a motion like they're drinking coffee and eating a sandwich, like they're at a lunch counter
