A primary objective of the BMA is to maintain an influential role in forming public and government opinion on key health-related matters and contribute to the development of effective public health policy. The BMA’s policy on the banning of boxing goes back over a decade with overwhelming support from its members to campaign vigorously for legal interventions because of the serious health risks involved. The BMA has renewed its call for action against boxing because of the growing commercialisation of no-holds barred fighting events (euphemistically called mixed martial arts), which have the sole aim to cause physical harm and injury to an opponent until they are unable to continue; the primary goal being to knock the opponent unconscious. Such ‘sports’ can lead to permanent injury and death.

Gotta admit, sometimes when I'm watching boxing I do think about the whole ridiculousness of it.

Well i guess they have a point... and sports that can cause death and heavy injuries such as boxing provided a lot over the years is maybe not really intelligent to do in an "advanced society".

However if they ban it, there will be a shitload of illegal parking lot matches or in private houses or whatever. So as long as people are willing to earn their money with it and putting their bodies on the line and people are willing to pay for it i'm against a ban.

To the best of my knowledge, there has been only 1 death in MMA, and it was during an unsanctioned match in the Ukraine from a fighter who had a pre-existing medical condition and was not allowed to fight in America.

The BMA can go F themselves.

    Sure,it's BARBARIC,but these Sports have WELL Conditioned,HIGHLY Trained,MEDICALLY CLEARED,Consenting Adults Participating...

Fights Themselves will ALWAYS Take Place...If Boxing & MMA were "Banned",there'd just B Some SEEDY Underground Shit,Similar to DOGfighting...

Like REED Said,Fights will ALWAYS Take Place...Therefore it's BETTER to have SANCTIONED Sports where Guys get PAID for it,vs. Doing it on the Street & Winding Up INCARCERATED...

    They are ignorant idiots.

There are more fatalities in horse racing for fuck's sake by a HUGE margin, why are they not campaigning to get that banned?

I've read a few articles like this, and no they don't really illustrate why. Just "it's barbaric, not a sport".

Which again, is ignorant. Boxers are superb athletes, and MMA fighters are good athletes too.

Compared to horseracing and golf, which they think are more legitimate sports

Seriously, the whole article does a good job of presenting the practical issues of why boxing/MMA should be banned.

My only argument is that the fights are consensual, (which has already been pointed out) which brings up a slippery slope argument "what if people consent to fights to the death" etc. Which I always reply "we DO have that...it's a part of WAR."

It's really a simple premise IMO...we still have aggressive tendencies, and so let them be in a controlled/supervised setting rather than unsanctioned circumstances.

    Ban Boxing?

Okay...as long as Nascar, Indy 500, F1, Wrestling, Football {Gridiron} and Lacrosse get bannned with it.
