Well, yeah, you are right. Those Chinese imports don't make much outside mainland China with the sole exception of Jet Li's Hero that made $53 million in USA, $30 million in China, $33 million in Japan and a few millions in a bunch of other countries for a worldwide total of $177 million vs a $31 million budget. I could be wrong, but I think 'Hero' is one the most widely successful Chinese films ever made that made more money abroad that in its own country. This new film, 'Wolf Warrior 2' has grossed $1.9 million in USA in just 53 screens in 9 days. The per day % is seeing a steady increase in revenue as days pass instead of dwindling. Very soon it will surpass the total revenue of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Sequel which even expanding to 553 screens has been unable to sell more tickets and it currently stands at $2.2 million after three weeks of its debut.

 

China is now the most sought after market by Hollywood and if their $250+ million budget blockbusters can't make that kind of money there it means they still don't understand that market. China has saved more than one film that was destined for the box office bombs list (Terminator Genesys & Pacific Rim comes to mind) while it elevated to blockbuster status small films that did bad in USA (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter made only $26 million in USA, but took a whooping $159 million in China!). So if a low budget local film like 'Wolf Warrior 2' can gross over $600 million in 14 days, Hollywood needs to take note why their megabudget films pale in comparison. We will see more Chinese co-productions from now on with more talent from China OR China will match in quality Hollywood's megabudget films and then can ban all imports if their local formula works. That prospective has studio honchos trembling.
