Self explanatory. For me, it's Mike at #1. The rest are in no particular order: Jackson Corrales Rosario Foster Trinidad Arguello
I assume most people will just name the usual suspects, so I'll go for somebody a bit different. He wasn't world class but one of my favourites was Wayne Alexander, he had some epic domestic scraps with Ojay Abrahams, Takaloo and Paul Samuels. He also had Harry Simon out on his feet briefly. The guy was a pretty awful boxer and had a dodgy chin but fuck me he could punch like a demon.
José Luis López 'El Maestrito' Because he had the rarity of legit KO power and one of the best chins ever and he abused himself with alcohol, drugs & women. Unbeatable combination all-round, I'd say.
Lopez beat up prime Campas more one sidedly than Tito and Vargas did. Camps did have his moments against Tito and Vargas... but Lopez beat the cap outta him every second of every round.
We were denied great matchups at 147 between López and De La Hoya/Trinidad. That wouldve been the mid-to-late-90' Leonard/Hearns/Hagler/Durán.
Objectively speaking... Lopez would not have beaten DLH or Tito. Of that I'm pretty certain. Oscar would be too fast and mobile, and Tito had too many weapons for a guy as hittable as Lopez. However, I do think he was deemed too high risk/low reward for either to face. But that doesn't mean I think he would've won. TODAY is a different story. I'm pretty confident that a motivated Lopez would have beaten the shit outta stationary guys like Porter and Garcia. Thurman admittedly might beat Lopez if he utilized movement all night... Lopez had very slow feet. But the possibility of Lopez clocking Thurman late is very real. Spence is on another level, and I have to think he'd outbox Lopez to a pretty clear decision win.
My list is like yours, I have Louis up there too. In fact, I’d probably have him right up there with Tyson in terms of having the best collection of highlight reel KOs.
I must admit, I always had a soft spot for Tua. Even when he was fat and lazy, I rooted for him. The man had murder in his left hook. And for what's it worth... I thought he beat Ike.
I don’t like slow punchers...fuck’em. I like Tyson and Hearns because their power came from frighteningly fast hands. Made it more dramatic
My favorite non-elite puncher was probably Antwun Echols. Scrubby overall, but my God he could punch. He had the misfortune of going up against a prime Hopkins.... had he fought Joppy instead, he would have won a belt.
I'll give a mention to Hamed even though he was overrated back then. His ability to generate power from the most 'what the fuck' angles was indeed uncanny.
Tyson for me without a doubt. I never remember watching a fighter when you have so much anticipation for that big bomb. It was never a question on “if” it would happen, but “when”.
Hamed is up there for me too. I couldn't stand the little arrogant chap, but I enjoyed watching him punch. Such raw power has seldom been witnessed in the history of the sport.
word...and it came like lightening. Remember that quick left hook against Carl The Truth Williams? Slipped the jab and the left hook just came at lightening speed.
For just how great it looked: Joe Louis Alexis Arguello Bob Foster Archie Moore For punches not looking hard that somehow killed guys: Little Red Lopez For the bomb: Earnie Shavers Julian Jackson For series of bombs: Mike Tyson Ruben Olivares
