Trinidad looked good in this fight. Less plodding, more light on his feet..he still had the terrific punch selection and power, but was smart enough to not load up on every shot.
Exactly...he lost quite a bit of that (and his jab and a more varied punch repertoire) the farther up he went....
agREED, though if I remember correctly, this is the fight where Ferdie Pacheco made mention of Arguello claiming Tito reminded him of a younger version of himself, right before he (Ferdie) himself referred to Trinidad as a potential Sugar Ray Robinson. Sadly, I agreed with him at the time :: (and still do)
Even though Carr was always overrated, the fact that Tito handled him easier than Quartey, and DLH did is impressive. Carr is probably Tito's 2nd most impressive win behind Vargas.
I had missed it, but recently got a tape of it. Decent fight, Carr had a few moments, but Ike beat him very clearly.
:: Yup, this is the fight...I believe what Ferdie says is that at one point (5th or 6th round) Trinidad is fighting like Sugar Ray Robinson.... Can't decide if that's better or worse than saying he's a potential SRR. :: However, the comparisons to Arguello I can kinda countenance and see where they're coming from...at least when Tito was at 147. There is quite a bit of similarity in their styles, though they're not identical by any means. Peace.
I thought they fought nothing alike. Arguello was a rangy boxer puncher/counter puncher. Morales reminds me more of arguello than anyone else, even down to the form of their jabs and their footwork etc. By the way Trinidad looks REALLY cool in that cap.
:: My God, man...Morales fights nothing like Arguello, beyond them being both thin and rangy. Their footwork is very different, as is their jab. Trinidad is a closer image, definitely. Hell, Arguello said it himself. Closer stance (in terms of foot placement), back heel up, smaller steps, straight up with both hands high and close, selective thudding jab (that they don't step into all the way unlike Erik), quick straight right, sweeping left hook that they often clean up with, selective, accurate punching, they even stood kinda similar. Similar height. Those are the similarities I see. :dunno: Of course, Arguello was the better boxer/technician. Peace.
Morales has always reminded me of arguello ever since I saw them. The way he moves forward, half springy, half stepping. The way arguello throws the long jab out there, whilst casually circling etc, is like Morales. The general form of their punches and combos are similar, as well as a wide left hook. Tito fights nothing like arguello. He is a shorter range fighter, and a thudding hooker, with a mid range, arcing left hook. His jab is not as long, his right hand not as long, and he has slow, sloppy footwork and moves less. I'm not saying Tito is a bum, just saying he fights absolutely nothing like arguello imo. In fact, I can't think of anyone that tito reminds me off stylistically. The only person he reminds me of in accordance to a general style is Corrales. The only difference is Corrales is more of an in fighter, and Tito more of a mid range fighter.
