Mugabi lasted almost 11 rounds with Hagler and won 3 or 4 rounds in the process. Does Trinidad do better?
Mugabi had a wild, not give a fuck style that made for a good fight with Hagler. The BIGGEST misconception about that fight was that it was competitive. Mugabi hung in there bravely, but make no mistake, Hagler beat the shit outta him. Trinidad was a more patient, methodical fighter than Mugabi, which actually plays into Hagler's hands. Trinidad doesn't beat ANY version of Hagler. I don't care if Tito's at his very best, and it's the Hagler that fought Leonard. Tito still loses. Just two different classes of fighters.
I tend to agree with you, based on Styles. I do think that Tito is tougher than Mugabi though and much better but his style plays into's Hagler's style in that Marvin was tough as nails, southpaw and heavy handed.
Richard Steele says this was the most brutal dual-bodywork attack of any fight he ever saw...from both fighters. Hagler cuts the gay Puerto in half in three. Tops.
Mugabi just gets more credit that I think he deserves. The narrative would have you believe the fight was dead even. For the most part, Hagler took him apart, and he brutally beat him down the stretch then KO'd him.
