absolutely. But with Overeem only defending his title once every 3 years that kind of sums it up.

I won't even pretend to debate this one. Allowing Overeem to remain champion for 3 years with no fights is ridiculous. That being said, the rest of their HW's have fought other top guys in the organization.

Efrain Escudero was released in the middle of his TUF-earned contract. It's an at-will deal that allows for 6 fights totaling 100k base and double the purse with a win. been that way since season 1

Well, then I'm lost. If you're talking about guys from different promotions not fighting each other then your statement is just misguided. MMA fans have never claimed that happens.

As I said, most MMA fans harp on the fact that loses don't kill your career and there are very few 'Champ vs Can' matchups like the Vitali Klitschko examples I listed.

I guess we agree, which sucks because I was up for a debate. Damn you.

I know you are trying to get at the fact there are guys outside the UFC that some would like to see the guys at the top of the UFC face. But seriously, there really aren't that many. When you look at most top 10 rankings, most of the rankings are UFC guys. With that said, would I love to see Eddie Alvarez fight BJ Penn? Absolutely. Would I love to see Fedor fight Cain? Sure. I personally would like to see Mousasi fight Anderson Silva too.

With more cuts inevitable, UFC boss not interested in staring-contest champions

by John Morgan on Nov 22, 2010 at 6:40 pm ET
While the pending merger between the UFC and WEC has been largely applauded by MMA pundits and fans, there are likely a few Zuffa-contracted fighters who are concerned about their fighting futures.

After all, with more athletes under contract than fights available to book, the new-look UFC will be forced to let go of a substantial amount of fighters in the new year.

UFC president Dana White said it's an unfortunate reality of the fight game, but it's no different than any other professional sport. Besides, perform well and White said you'll have nothing to fear.

"These are the big-leagues, man," White said. "It's no different than Major League Baseball, no different than the NFL. You perform, or you go away."

Following each UFC event, fans and media alike try and channel their inner Joe Silva (the UFC's vice president of talent relations) and determine which crop of fighters are likely to receive their walking papers. It's a sad reality that at least a few fighters from each UFC event are likely to be fighting on the regional circuit in their next appearance, but White said it's no different than any other professional sport.

"It's no different than any other professional sports organization," White said. "That's exactly the way it works. If you want to stay at the top of the food chain, you do. If you don't perform, you don't.

"You know how many [expletive] guys get cut in the NFL and Major League Baseball every day? It's crazy. Staggering. It's the same thing here. There's no difference."

White said the key to UFC longevity is to fight hard, regardless of result. Take, for instance, five-time "Fight of the Night" winner Tyson Griffin, who retained his position with the organization despite suffering his third-straight defeat at this past weekend's UFC 123 event.

"I'd rather have two guys in a dog fight and have a guy lose and keep him around than have a guy who's in the Ultimate Staring Competition for five minutes," White said. "Nobody wants to see that [expletive]."

The opposite holds true for newcomer Maiquel Falcao, who was often unwilling to move forward during his UFC 123 decision victory over Gerald Harris. White said he'll give the Brazilian a pass in his first octagon appearance, but the UFC boss' expectations call for a more entertaining affair next time out.

"What I'm giving [Falcao] is the benefit of the doubt because this was his first UFC fight," White said. "He did go in against a tough guy, but I think he could have finished that fight whenever he wanted to."

The WEC's final event is scheduled for December, and several of the promotion's athletes are already scheduled for UFC cards. Many of them, as well as their UFC counterparts, will be fighting for roster spots each time they step in the cage. And with the world's best fighters all hoping for a chance to shine on the octagon, White notes it's important to fight each contest as if it could be your last as a UFC employee.

"There's a lot of guys that are coming up that are really talented," White said. "I think the pool is just going to keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger. You're going to keep getting these guys from all over the world.

"It's a dog-eat-dog world. There's so many good guys out there. You're literally fighting for your UFC life every time you fight."

I agree, but why do you think they have had it in for Harris though?

I haven't seen enough of Harris to know how good he is, but his record speaks for itself, and nobody else with a similar record would get cut after ONE loss.

He must have done something a while ago then to rub Dana the wrong way.

Dana really is a cock, and seems to be surprisingly emotional/unprofessional for a guy running a business the scale of the UFC.

It's funny, because when Gerald was trying to get back in the UFC, he prank called MMAJunkie during the part where the interviewer gets asked questions(it was Dana) and then hyped up himself while posing as an Englishman, saying he should really sign this guy. They found out it was Gerald and he laughed and Dana said that he liked him and he wanted him to call the office and he'd get him back in the UFC.

Now all of that just seems like a load of shit, I honestly think he was bringing Gerald in to feed to his new prospects and Gerald stunned him by walking away with a ton of money and exposure.

I really don't get it. I've seen the interviews, I've seen how fighters regard Gerald, and I cannot see how he could've been some douche to upset Dana and put him in the doghouse. He is probably one the funniest and genuinely good-hearted people in MMA. Hell, the Junkie guys used to clown around with Harris saying he was on the Bum Fighting Curcuit and Gerald was just laugh and joke with them, they knew that they could joke with him like that because he's got a good sense of humor.

The only thing more annoying than the recent Dana tyranny, is also that we will never get an official reason why he was cut, much like Duffee.

Tito Ortiz is still in the UFC and he hasn't won a legit fight since Vitor Belfort.

Duffee was a bum. If the UFC really was the NFL he shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Exactly. That fat bum gave him every chance in the world to finish him, but he couldn't do it. Finally, fat bum says " fuck this, I'm getting tired, let's see what happens if I hit him now."

Sure he is, this is Fightbeat, if you aren't an elite fighter, you are a bum.

Hell, if this was the boxing section, even if you are an elite fighter, you are still a bum(Andre Ward).

Serra is at least average, straight up and down no special effects. That fat guy that KO'd Duffee looked like he came straight from the buffet.

Yeah, but you can probably argue that the UFC as we know it today doesn't exist if not for Tito Ortiz.

Very true. Tito carried the UFC during the "dark" years when it was banned in a lot of places. That doesn't excuse Tito shamelessly ducking Chuck Liddell for so long, but Tito made the sport about fierce rivalries and gamesmanship. Back in those lean years for the company, he sold lots of tickets.
