Remember when hbo wcb was reserves for the very best fighters in the world? Not anymore. I honestly cannot remember the name of either of the guys fighting saturday. And i do not care because when they announced the matchup, i remember saying to myself, "who?"

Sad how crappy hbo has become.

No offense, but how does any hardcore not know who Jorge Linares is?

This is actually a good weekend of fights. Not just the Linares fight on HBO, but ESPN has a good card Friday night featuring Oscar Valdez against some young, undefeated Filipino kid. I saw clips of the kid on Youtube, he's pretty skilled. Should be a good matchup.

Linares is very talented offensively. and actually really great to watch. he puts his punches together well with great technique. his durability and chin have been the major issues that prevented him from becoming a superstar

Yep, that's the story of Linares' career really. I remember back in the day when he was hyped to be the next big thing.

You must update me on this reference. I see you use it a lot and have no idea what the backstory is. I'm assuming it's because of Double L though

I know who he is. But he's not wcb headliner material. Wouldn't you agree?

He is not a wcb headliner. Shows how shitty gbp and hbo have become.

This. Offensively, he's beautiful. If Linares had Golovkin's chin, he'd have been a P4P guy for many years. But his chin is pretty dodgy. Mikey would KO Linares, but other than Mikey, he'd likely beat everybody else at 135.

His power is relatively shit. The guy didn't pan out. Gbp just will not accept it.

He hasn't exactly have a failure of a career just because he didn't pan out to be a star.

Precisely. He's no bum, he is still a decent fighter at world level, just not the superstar he was sort of hyped to be.

Is his status comparable to the fighters featured in wcb historically (the point of the thread)?

Who gives a shit whether it's WCB or BAD. Honestly, that's so trivial. It's not a bad matchup.

It is relevant to whether or not hbo's quality has declined significantly. Clearly it has. It is apparently willing to go down with the ship.

Well, it is noteworthy in all its manifestations, including hbo's dwindling quality.

w/Out Trying to Rehash the '"Good Ol' Days vs Contemporary Fighters" Argument, disagREED...

From a FAN'S Perspective, and What a Fan Can REALISTICALLY View Regularly, REED Can't Say The "Quality" of Boxing has Declined...Are There FEWER "Quality" Boxers Per Weight Class, Top to Bottom? Of Course There Are, But There's Also SAFER, More LUCRATIVE Sporting Options for Youth...

For American Fans, We Might Have to Delve OUT of Our Country and LOWER in Weight Than We're Accustomed to, for "Quality" Fights/Fighters. But Make No Mistake, They're THERE...

Is, Has Been and Always WILL Be, in REED's Honest Opinion...

    REED GETS What Doub's Saying...

Historically, "World Championship Boxing" has Featured Those that LEGITIMATELY Moved the Needle During their Time as Elite Fighters...A Jorge Linares Level Fighter WOULDN'T Main Event an HBO "World Championship Boxing" Card Back In the Day...

Fewer quality fighters means boxing has declined... the reasons for that are irrelevant to the basic truth of the statement

If fewer people played baseball, baseball would be shittier

So you don't think it's just that showtime is kicking hbo's ass? And that's the reason the quality of its fights have declined?

I think i am referring to a more recent and more local decline. I'm not referring to the loss of the glory days when Bobby Duran was beating up on good old Stephen and Larry Holmes was handing out jock straps. I'm talking about the fairly recent dip in the quality of hbo's fights. I guess it has been trending for a while, with wcb having become a showcase long ago. But really seems like their partnering with gbp has brought them to a new low.

Hbos roster is depleted with the defection of top rank to espn and obviously haymons guys fighting on showtime or the networks. Who else is really left?

Perhaps, but it's Also the Battle Cry of EVERY "Good Ol' Days" Syndrome Having, "Get Off My Lawn" Ol Fart that's Ever Lived...

The Water is Allegedly WORSE Today, the Sky ISN'T as Blue as it was "Back in the Day", Women were PRETTIER "Back in the Day"...The "Quality" of Boxing is Declining...

    Facts.

If he had a decent chin he would have been a much bigger name.

Yeah! Depleted in a big way. And Linares headlining a WCB event is evidence of this.

Agreed, I was certain Linares would become a major player in boxing when he was coming up. He's a joy to watch. Great technique, great style. As you've said that's his chin and durability that is an issue. I look forward to saturday's fight.
