Having Brett Rogers call Kimbo out smells like Shaw's promotion to me:

Kimbo's the better striker... Maybe it goes the other way too.

For the first round he is. He's a totally different fighter when he's gassed. Which doesn't take long to happen.

He's fighting another black MMA guy? Doesn't that ruin his gimmick?

Is there any word on what the card will look like on July 26?

It'll be gong head to head with Cotto-Margarito that night.

It depends on who is on the next show.

Who does Elite XC have other than Kimbo that can headline a show next month and bring in sure-fire ratings?

Shaw went all out with this last show with his biggest star and got a 4.3, without much sports competition.

I'm not sure the ratings go up much from there.

It could certainly draw some fans from Cott-Margarito, but I can't see it taking real boxing fans from paying for the card.

If Kimbo is the best EliteXC has to offer viewers, I can't see them doing well. Like Brett Rogers said, he's garbage.

If anything, I think it will capture most of the boxing audience. Do you really think there's gonna be anything worth watching on the Cotto\Margarito undercard? Especially if there's a better alternative of free TV?

I'm guessing a lot of people will watch the MMA, then when it's over, turn to the boxing main event.

I'm sure that if both fighters are healthy enough, the Lawler\Smith rematch will be the main event. They'll probably put Kimbo is the co-headliner, maybe against Shamrock. If Eddie Alvarez is available I can see them using him. Probably Bigfoot Silva\Grim Rogers as well. I'm sure they'll stack the card as best they can.

Kimbo did indeed bring in the viewers...

EliteXC on CBS peaks with 6.51 million viewers

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 03, 2008 at 3:23 pm ET
[IMG]This past Saturday's "EliteXC: PRIMETIME" event, which aired on CBS as part of the new "Saturday Night Fights" series, peaked with 6.51 million viewers during a main event between Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and James Thompson, according to updated Nielsen live plus same day ratings for May 31.

The ratings for the final 51 minutes of the event weren't initially available because the event ran past its two-hour scheduled time.

The addition of that data lifted ratings for the entire broadcast and eclipsed previous U.S. MMA ratings records held by the UFC and Spike TV.

The UFC's two highest rated events on Spike TV are UFC 75 (5.93 million viewers) and UFC Final Chapter: Ortiz vs. Shamrock III (5.89 million), according to a an email sent today by Spike TV. Spike TV is in 96.1 million homes. CBS is in 112.8 million.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported on Sunday, the 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern portion of the show did a 2.7 rating and a 5 share, an audience of 4.3 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings for Saturday.

While leading up to the event, EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw had estimated the show would garner anywhere from four million to 10 million viewers.

The event delivered an overall 3.0/06 (rating/share) with 4.85 million viewers; 2.2/07 in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49; 2.3/09 in adults 18-34; 3.1/09 in men 25-54; 3.0/10 in men 18-49; and 3.2/12 in men 18-34.

"Saturday Night Fights" cleared approximately 95 percent of CBS stations in the country. The telecast was pre-empted in those remaining markets due to coverage of the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.

Much like Spike TV's brodcast of The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale that put the UFC on the map in 2005, Saturday's EliteXC broadcast saw half-hour gains in viewers throughout the broadcast. A total of 3.38 million viewers were watching at 9 p.m., and the broadcast peaked at 6.51 million at 11:30 p.m.

EliteXC also today announced that a replay of "EliteXC: PRIMETIME" will air on Showtime on Friday, June 13 at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

But if most of them tune over to the Cotto-Margarito ppv then how does it hurt the number of buys?

My point was I don't know how many actual boxing fans would pass on Cotto-Margarito for the next Elite XC show.

He's bringing Kimbo, et al back on a show that's next month?

I don't think there was any boxing competition. Besides Christmas break, this past weekend was one of the thinnest in the 2000's, and there's a good chance it was the thinnest. I mean, there wasn't even boxing on the hispanic channels.

Yeah, and it probably helped the ratings that the show went well over...the same thing probably happened with the hockey game last night.

I wonder if it was by design.

But the thing is, boxing fans won't be missing out on the Cotto fight. They'll watch the main event. But if the undercard sucks, which it most likely will, they'll order the PPV, but watch EliteXC until it's time for Cotto and Margarito to fight.

    That's my plan, anyway.

Yeah, but I was just responding to the point of Arum's choice of date and whether EXC will decrease the ppv buys and I don't think it will, at least not to a large degree.

It'd be hard to prove one way or the other, though, without some polling data.

I think it could effect the number of buys, but I don't think it'll be a drastic number. Remember, money is tight for a lot of people these days, and there are people out there who aren't gonna shell out $50 for a PPV when there's a free alternative on TV.

But Cotto and Margarito will sell huge to the Hispanic audience, which MMA hasn't really captured yet.

I can understand that way of thinking.

However, Kimbo just started MMA. We all saw Gannon whip him in a streetfight, where everytime he was in a choke, Slice's people stopped the submission......only for BIG FAT SEAN GANNON to outlast and beat Kimbo Slice.

Well, ya know what? Sean Gannon wouldn't whip him now. And Sean Gannon wouldn't whip Thompson now either.

So that means to me that Kimbo Slice is improving.

Too much is expected from this guy because of the OVERWHELMING hype. But really......Kimbo is one tough SOB.

Kimbo's friends stopped the submission because it was supposed to be exclusively a fist fights, like all of Kimbo's internet video, Gannon won by being tough and by Kimbo gassing, I don't think he landed 1 meaningfull strike in the whole fight and had his face looking like an hamburger. Kimbo's haters are ridiculous, I don't see ( on fightbeat at least ) one of his fan claiming he's gonna be the next dominant champ in MMA, yet, his haters are like : "Kimbo sucks, he would get destroyed by Nog or Fedor", uh, no shit einstein, apart from a slight puncher chances he would be completely outclass there. Like BTG said, you have to take him for what as he is, an entertainer and a tough sob, maybe he'll crack into the elite eventually, probably he won't, but I'll sure be watching.

Lawler and Diaz should be bigger attractions because they are better but they are not big enough stars.

All im saying is that if a boxing fans doesn't pay $50 to see the Margarito-Cotto fight they get to see EliteXC for free. It sure doesn't help the PPV get the maximum buys possible.
