The hungry, ruthless Kovalev that destroyed Cleverly and the Kov that was in boxing mode against Ward were like two different fighters.
Please. Kov was the same fighter against Ward; ruthless. It's just that Ward couldn't be bullied and started to hit him in the body and he couldn't take it.
Very interesting. I don't doubt any of that but I agree it is a bit dick-headish move for a trainer to speak out like that. As for the info, I truly believe Kovalev is a selfish asshole, most individual athletes are. Also, he wouldn't be the first guy to stop training after having some success. And perhaps he even is a bully that folds when hit back - at least there is a question mark after the Ward bouts. I have also gotten the impression he doesn't fancy facing Beterbiev, maybe for this reason
This interview doesn't put Jackson in the best of lights. He managed to make himself sound like a bitter, double crossing individual even if what he says is true (and I do belive most of it is true even if I like Kovy). Plus, Ward koed Kovalev with a ball shot not a body shot, which is important to mention when talking about the 2nd fight
I'm a Kov fan, will always be a Kov fan. He's still my second favorite current fighter behind Spence. But yeah, Ward did expose him as a front runner. I was hoping he wasn't one, but he definitely has "give" in him. I don't think he'll ever be the same. For one, because he's getting pretty old, and two, because psychologically, he'll likely never have the same confidence in himself anymore. Once a bully's confidence has been shattered, it doesn't return. If he does fight Sullivan Barrera next, Barrera would stand a great chance of pulling the upset. In his defense, he still dominated the division for 3 years. He'll go down as a very good fighter, but probably doesn't have the substance to have beaten any of the light heavyweight greats.
