That article is only 5% Junior and 95% Chavez Sr vs DLH first fight and what it meant for both and for Mexicans.
Same with Amir Khan. Goes to show what good match making can do. But at least Khan was a dedicated guy before he just lost the desire after the Garcia fight. Chavez Jr on the other hand never gave a fuck about boxing so it always puzzled me as to why he was even a fighter to begin with.
Calling khan not talented is beyond absurd. Guy had among the fastest hands in boxing and solid power. He was no rj, but he obviously had abovve average physical abilities (hell guy has no skills, and he only achieved what he did because of his talent) And yes he was protected for a while, but again, he shouldnt come up in any discussion about protected boxers, since hes far from the worst.
But then, youre the one who also called his wife among the most hideous woman in boxing, so its clear you have an irrationnal hatred for the Guy
You have this annoying tendency to misquote and put words in people's mouth, so I'm not even gonna go there. But no, beyond hand speed and athleticism, Khan wasn't all that. He fought in predictable patterns behind a one two, couldn't counter punch, and had chin of a two year old. His ring IQ was also laughable. As is your suggestion that Khan is "skilled."
I don't think JoM called him skilled, but talented, in which case I'd agree. Predictable patterns and inability to counter are skills which can be learned and obviously Khan didn't have that. He did, however, enjoy a pretty good career considering these weaknesses, which proves that he did indeed have talent. The most glaring lack of talent he had was the inability to learn. Even his chin wasn't that bad, it had more to do with the fact that he kept his chin high (skill)
Grand that in tje same post you manage to say that i have a tendancy to put words in people months, and claim i call khan skillled when in the post just above i clearly said he has no skills
Khan has physical gifts in speed and height/range, but I always got the impression that he lacked a certain natural learning talent. For instance, guys like Rocky Marciano, Dwight Qawi, and Hasim Rahman starting boxing late. Personally I wasn’t ever too impressed with Rahman, but he did become HW champ and was a contender for awhile after having picked up the sport at what, 20? There’s definitely a certain talent there and learning things quickly and improving. George Foreman won a Gold Medal after having boxed for only 3 years or so, and beat Joe Frazier 5 years later. I felt like Khan just wasn’t a quick learner and lacked the ability to really incorporate things into his game once he reached a certain level. Or maybe more appropriately, lacked a certain ability to not fall into bad habits. When he worked with Virgil Hunter and fought Luis Collazo, despite his octopus-esque holding, he was looking more like skilled and like his movements were thought out. Not flailing purposeless movements like he often did. But his next fight, against Chris Algieri of all people, he reverted back to all his bad habits. Khan just didn’t “pick up” on things like top fighters do, and if he did, couldn’t be consistent in applying it. That was what kept him from being a real top fighter moreso than the chin.
