Has anyone else watched the Tyson documentary? I thought it was well done. Tyson is a very complicated and interesting figure. But more impressively, he's very introspective. I'm hard pressed to think of another boxer, past or present, as self-reflective as he is. It's what makes Tyson so mesmerizing. We're able to hear straight from his own mouth an analysis of his life and times. I found it amazing.

Boxing-wise, I found particularly interesting his recollection of the Holyfield fights. And with camera work, it becomes obvious that Holyfield's head-butting was a deliberate tactic on his part. And this in both fights.

Also, I found it amazing that not only did Tyson find himself in a place of having to continually invent himself to make sense of his world and himself, but that he actually has come to realize it!

The movie was not about Cus DeMado, but it obviously touched on the relationship Tyson had with the man. What's a little frightening is how mentally sick it is clear Cus was. For Tyson, Cus was no doubt the lesser of two evils, and although he can be credited almost fully with Tyson's rise as a great fighter, it's not as if Cus necessarily had Tyson's best interest at heart.

I think overall that's been a theme in Tyson's life: nobody around with his best interest at heart.

My apologies if there's already a thread about the movie.

What do other posters think of the movie?

I haven't seen it but I am going to watch it as soon as I can so I'd be interested to hear other opinions too.

Btw. It is not Cus DeMado

Hearing him talk about the ear biting was cool, people always like to say he "found a way out" but hearing Mike talk about it, it's clear he didn't want out, he simply wanted to murder Holyfield at that moment.

It was Pretty OBVIOUS To Everybody BUT Tyson Haters that Mike Simply LOST IT that Night...Even During his Immediate Post-Fight Interviews, Tyson Said, "Holyfield Wanted to Make it a Streetfight, so I Took it to the Streets"...

When your Health & Livelihood is Threatened & When a Man is HABITUALLY BREAKING the Rules, it's Hard to Maintain the Integrity of a "Boxing Match"...If Tyson had a GUN in his Corner that Night, REED has NO Doubts that Tyson would've SHOT Holyfield's Ass:lol:...

The BEST Point Tyson Made about Holy's Headbutting is when he Pointed Out that Holy was MUCH TALLER than him & Therefore had NO Business CONSTANTLY Headbutting him, UNLESS it was INTENTIONAL...

Ok. That's important. So important that you didn't even say what the correct spelling is. Very enlightening.

That is true. Defenders of Holyfield will always point out that it is Holyfield's style of fighting to keep his head low when he moves forwards but that is bull. His butting is clearly intentional, and even if it was not, then it would be up to him to change his style because it is illegal.

That being said, it is no excuse for what Tyson did and I don't think there even is a big difference between wanting to quit and 'losing it' when you don't like what is happening. Both show mental weakness

As for the Documentary Itself, it wasn't QUITE as Good as REED Heard it was (It Put Mrs. REED to SLEEP 1/4 of the Way Thru it), but Definitely a MUST-SEE for ANY Boxing Fan...REED Gets why Some People LOATHE Tyson, but REED Still has SYMPATHY for the Man...

& his BRUTAL HONESTY is Almost Touching...There's NEVER Any Right or Wrong, Good or Bad, when Tyson Speaks of the Past or his Actions...He just LAYS it All Out There as it Is...For Example, he MAINTANS that he NEVER Raped Desiree Washington, yet he Stopped SHORT of Saying he'd NEVER Sexually Assaulted ANY Woman or Placed 1 in a Compromising Position Before...

VERY FEW Celebrities R as FORTHRIGHT & ACCOUNTABLE as Mike Tyson...He Even BLAMED HIMSELF for Losing Hundreds of Millions of Dollars...

This was merely an okay documentary. It didn't shed any new light on what we already knew about Tyson. Honestly I forced myself to watch the whole thing, but it wasn't that good.

It's hard to imagine there is anything left to learn about Ali after his 3,000 documentaries and Tyson after his 2,300. I'd rather watch two club fighters on Telemundo.

Hopkins uses the forehead first technique,.. I think you'll find it's old school classification is 'tucking in the chin' ..awesome defensive wizardry that um, through no fault of Holyfield and Hopkins own ofcourse, sometimes causes an accidental headbutt or two.

Great breakdown REED. You're right that Tyson's brutal honesty is a huge part of the doc. In fact Tyson's so down right honest about every thought in his head you have a heard time thinking he's lying about any of the negative things that were misrepresented in his life such as the headbutt and the raping. The Doc was kinda boring at times but it did recapture what destructive beast Tyson was early.

Double L I'm confused where you say D'Amato was a bad guy. What are you talking about?

Mike's genuinely one of the most interesting public figures of the last 20 years. I'm glad that public perceptions of him are starting to shift thanks to things like this movie.

Cus was GOOD to Mike, but let's Face it, there was SELFISHNESS Involved on Cus' Part...If Mike Tyson COULDN'T Box a Lick, Do U HONESTLY Think he'd have Been Adopted by D'Amato???:dunno:...

REED ISN'T Calling Cus a "Bad Guy", but he was Definitely OPPORTUNISTIC...Also, After it Became Apparent that Tyson had a FUTURE in Boxing, D'Amato Basically ENABLED & OVERLOOKED ALOT of the Crass & Inappropriate Behavior that Mike has ALWAYS Exhibited Around Females...

REED Isn't Speaking for Doub or Anything, but that's 1 Facet of the Cus-Tyson Relationship that's ALWAYS Gotten Swept UNDER the Rug by Everybody, OTHER than Teddy Atlas...

In another document they said that D'Amato was a paranoid. He was afraid of mobsters and saw mafia interfering everywhere etc. I don't doubt he had a good heart

The guy was obviously obsessed. Like I said, for Mike it was the lesser of two evils. But it wasn't as if Cus were some humanitarian who reached out with the intention of helping Mike. No. Cus was every bit dependent on Mike as Mike was on him.

And I didn't say he was a bad guy. I think he was probably mentally ill.
