Roy was THE VERY FIRST fighter commentator who actually offered ANY type of actual analysis. He paved the way for Tarver, Ward, and Paulie in that regard. Prior to Roy, you had guys like Foreman, Leonard, and Czyz, who just sat up there and stated the fuckin obvious. Sean O'Grady was DECENT in terms of analysis sometimes, but mostly he just stated the obvious also. Roy was the first one who would actually tell you WHY fighter A was doing such and such, and EXACTLY what fighter B needed to do to change the fight. Foreman, Leonard, Czyz, O'Grady, ect never did that.
And whoever said that Jones doesn't see tape of the fighters he covers is incorrect. Roy usually has a VERY good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the fighter's he's covering. Jones is a pretty big FAN of the sport in general, and you can tell that he watches a lot of boxing, now only of the present, but from the past as well. Roy's the ONLY guy on the HBO telecast who will ever reference past generation fighters. Kellerman bringing up Whitaker once a telecast doesn't count. For instance, Jones brought up Qawi during the Crawford-Gamboa fight when he was discussing short fighter's with good jabs. A guy like Andre Ward would never do that. Ward doesn't strike me as a real FAN of boxing. He just does it because it's his job, and he's very good at it. Roy's a FAN of the sport, which is why I prefer him over Ward. Paulie's a big fan of the sport as well.
X, agreed rjj actually likes boxing whereas ward doesn't. That is a huge difference. With ward you get the idea for him boxing starts and ends with himself.
You can tell during a great action fight that Roy gets just as excited as us watching at home. Whereas Ward, I always get the sense of "Let me analyze this fight, and collect my check."
