    According to fightnews:
"IBF heavyweight challenger Alexander Povetkin (17-0, 12 KOs) is currently in training camp together with trainer Teddy Atlas in the USA. Povetkin is preparing to return to the ring to fight for the world championship next year."

    What a shame...

I thought Atlas turned down the opportunity or something. Did he reconsider? Either way, Teddy can only hurt.

Nah. It was mentioned on FNF that Teddy was working with him.

Teddy was never going to turn down the chance to work with a guy like Povetkin. The only way he would have turned down Povetkin is if Povetkin turned him down first.

Maybe Povetkin is the type that reponds well to someone screaming in his face between rounds.

Atlas is the worst trainer ever.

Atlas is an expert at breaking down the will both physically and mentally... of his own fighters.

Once his fighter loses, he will shout that he didn't listen to him, that he got lazy on the inside, stayed in no man's land, etc.. then talk a little bit about how he predicted Douglas would beat Tyson (even though he really didn't).

Yeah, Atlas seems to have almost no adaptability...but I'm not convinced this is a bad move for Povetkin, because he comes from a pretty extensive and very successful amateur career in Russia.

Maybe this will be similar to Steward and Wladimir...and Steward always talks about how easy it is to train Wladimir.

IMO...if Povetkin is the goods..he will be very successful w/ Atlas...

but if you are a bitch(Grant) Atlas will bring it out of you...and expose you...

Name one fighter that has actually become better under Atlas.

He coaches for the camera, he doesn't care about the fighter. "George Foreman is like an old car, if you push it it will break down" What a great advice to Michael Moorer

Grant came late to the sport...didn't have much of an amateur career, didn't have the foundation of technique and skill that Povetkin does.

I also don't think that's an accurate description of Grant.

He was a fluid fighter in the ring under Don Turner, and he could turn and create space and put punches together pretty darn well for a fighter his size.

What he needed after the Lewis fight was a trainer that could enhance what he did well, not try to break him down and start from scratch.

Atlas will give dramatic speeches to Povetkin, Povetkin will not listen, lose, and they'll split up.

Povetkin will then fight his heart out in a loss, with another trainer in the corner.

    It's the Atlas tradition.

:bears:EXCELLENT Way of Putting it, Because that's PRECISELY What Teddy Atlas Does...Who Can Forget the OVERLY DRAMATIC Brow Beating that Michael Moorer Received (1st Holyfield Fight?) ???...Teddy Referenced Moorer's Kid & Everything...Or How Bout when Teddy LECTURED Michael Grant in the Center of the Ring, AFTER A WIN on FNF???...For that Particular Bout, FNF MIC'ed Teddy & He MILKED the Living Shit Out of It...

ALL Trainers R AWARE of the Camera, but Very Few Take Up 58 of the 60 Seconds btwn Rounds, w/DIALOGUE...There's NOfuckingWAY a Fighter can PROCESS Teddy's Loooooooooooong Winded Bullshit, but he Does it ANYWAYS...For the CAMERA's...

& Then, when his Fighters FAIL (Which is like 95 % of the Time), Teddy DISTANCES Himself from the Blame...It's Never "WE Didn't Do..." After a Loss, it's ALWAYS "HE Didn't Do..."...Even w/Tyson, Teddy Takes FULL Credit for BEING THERE During Mike's Formative Years, but Teddy Takes NO Blame for ENABLING Mike, Even Though EVERYBODY in the Tyson Camp ENABLED his Behavior to Some Degree...

REED has NO Thoughts on How Teddy will Work w/Povetkin Until he's SEEN Some Results...& REED Actually LIKES Teddy Atlas...But Atlas Damn Sure PERFORMS For the CAMERA, as Opposed to HELPING His Own Fighter...

    Spot-On Analysis...

Teddy knows the game pretty well in breaking down matchups and so on but has never proven to be a good trainer.

He seems oblivious at time to his own fighters mentality and/or physical limitations. Almost as if his fighter is a video game character that he controls and can simply do whatever commands he "inputs".

Atlas probably would be good in an advisory role. Show him tapes of the opponent in question, work with the trainer on developing some strategies etc.

THAT Was It!!!....REED Incorrectly Thought it was the 1st Moorer-Holyfield Bout...

"I just Got Off the Phone & Your Kid is @ Home CRYING!!!" (paraphrasing)...

SHAMELESS Display of "Coaching for the Camera"...

    agREED...

OBVIOUSLY, Teddy Atlas KNOWS the Sport of Boxing...Whether Guys LIKE him or NOT, they've GOT to GIVE Teddy THAT Much...REED would Loooooove to Share a Beer & Watch Some Fights w/a Cat like Atlas...

But as a Trainer, his People Skills SUCK...N ALOT of Ways, a Boxing Trainer is like a Surrogate Big Brother or FATHER...To his Detriment, Teddy's an ASSHOLE 100% of the Time, when it's Only Necessary Probably 30-40% of the Time (Dependent Upon the Fighter)...

Most Fighters R SENSITIVE & DON'T Want to B Undermined or BELITTLED, Especially in PUBLIC...Teddy Atlas Either Doesn't "Get" This OR Doesn't Give a Shit...

Great break down. If I may add I also don't think it's a good idea to have a trainer who wears 2 hats like Teddy and Steward. I don't see what good it does to have a trainer who can't give 100% of himself to you because he has a tv gig. Nobody who works 2 jobs can put in 100% effort on both of them, it's just not going to happen.
