I would like to see Marquez arrange a fight with Lopez, myself. I do think Vazquez should probably either retire, or take one more bout for a final paycheque. Absolutely no more than that.

There are other routes for Marquez beyond Lopez, too. Where do you think he should be headed next? I wouldn't actually like to see Marquez go on too much longer...a fight with Lopez &, should he succeed, a final fling for the Featherweight title against John. A chance to go out with a championship at a third weightclass, & the avenging of his brother to boot.

Lopez...John...Retirement. What do you think of this plan?

certainly lopez would much prefer a marquez bout than a tougher match with gamboa for 1/3 of the $. the marquez brothers shouldve signed with al haymon several years ago when it was a possibility, that beristain blocked.

Darchinyan's a name that's getting some talk...it makes sense from a Gary Shaw/Showtime sense...almost expect it now somewhere in So. Cal, like Home Depot Center.

    After that, maybe JuanMa?

I like Marquez, but if he lost to Darchinyan, I will take odds that Steve Kim doesn't make it out of the year alive.

I disagree it makes sense. Should Darchinyan win it, it ruins all momentum for Marquez, destroying possibly lucrative affairs with the other name-talents of the Featherweight class. Should Marquez win it, it will be belittled, on account of the size (&, in truth, class) divide. I don't see what Shaw thinks he has to gain from this particular fight.

He is an admirably-intrepid fighter, no question.

    Momentum?

He's had two fights in two years...same as the guy he was in the ring against.

Darchinyan isn't a featherweight, which would seem to make him a pretty ideal opponent in a set-up fight...one that'd be pretty easy for Gary Shaw to put on Showtime.

And after that, a payday with Juanma to close out the year.

But if he can't beat the likes of Darchinyan, do you really want to see him in the ring against Juanma?

Every fighter has momentum following a victory --- & this one was relatively high-profile. I'm speaking of momentum in the context of having your name in the headlines & striking while the iron's hot, to clarify, not in the sense Marquez is on the cusp of some grand winning streak.

It does nothing for Darchinyan, & therefore Shaw, because he cannot win the fight, & will be badly hurt in the process. It's a needless set-back. It does nothing for Marquez, because if he somehow loses, or even struggles slightly in winning, it will threaten to burn his bridge to the likes of Lopez & John, & if he wins as expected, no one will take the victory seriously, for the reasons I outlined.

It's time to make moves directly for either Lopez or John. Myself, I would love to see him tackle Lopez first (a fight I'm confident he can succeed in), & use it as a springboard to a highly-marketable (& winnable) title bout with John. There have been some who have suggested the path of least resistance to a 126lb. title, in the form of Salido. I wouldn't like it, myself. It's not the Mexican way, & Marquez is a legitimate warrior of his ancestry. Fighting Salido with the division as loaded as it is would be copping out.

I think Marquez is vulnerable and there are a lot of tough options. He'll get at least two more big fights. I'd start out with the fight that will bring him the most money, not the one I think is most winnable.
