The problem with teh prequels was more to do with Lucas' story telling than it was with the actual directing. The prequels were not aligned with teh original trilogy and that's the big problem. Sure, Sith had good action and drama and was fun to watch....but the plot, which was the fault of the previous two films, was inconsistent with the mythology that hard core star wars fans such as myself grew up knowing.

For example: Leah said she has vague memories of her mother being sad etc....in Sith her mother died when she was a newborn. There's a plethora of such examples in sith and the other prequels which ultimately made Sith not very enjoyable for hard core fans.

Like it has been hammered a trillion times, the problem with the prequels is that no one wanted to see the Anakin Skywalker first as an annoying little boy and later as a spoiled brat. While not bad, the first two prequels were pointless and unnecessary. Sith was very good, BUT could have been way, way much better. The whole General Grievious angle was more screen time filler than actual plot point. It did not mattered at all. The long awaited Darth Vader in mask & helmet sequence was too short and cringe worthy ('NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!).

Like with the George Lucas failed 'Young Indiana Jones' tv series that got cancelled atfer just one season, no one gives a shit about an iconic character as a boy and as a teenager.

Lucas just does too much. He would be terrible at spray painting.

Pretty much everything he is involved with turns to gold:

Star Trek: Into Darkness was a huge critical success and box-office success - it was (gasp!) 10% less successful than Star Trek - so you're wrong on both counts.
Super8 made a gross-profit of 2x it's budget and a critical success by Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB
Mission Impossible III is average, not a 'turkey' and the only one of the series that didn't profit.
So, as a Director, he's pretty much on-point.

Let's get to JJ Abrams as a Producer:
Cloverfield - rated as one the smartest sci-fi/monster flicks of its time - also nearly quadrupled it's budget in takings
The two Star Trek movies and three Mission Impossible movies we've already discussed...and I'm sure you'll agree, with these movies, it's the Production that counts...not the Direction.

Otherwise we'd be seeing the names Christopher McQuarrie and Brad Bird way up there in the stratosphere of 'movies-we-can't-wait-to-see-these-guys-direct'...like we did Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand.

    Wouldn't we?

    Class dismissed.

Come on, man! Without George Lucas we would have never seen Star Wars nor the avalanche of scifi classics that were greenlighted after the success of SW. Lucas also created Indiana Jones. The guy deserves kudos forever.

As a Director, he was good for his first three:
    THX 1138
    American Graffiti
Star Wars IV: A New Hope

Ironically, the last four he directed were pure dogshit.

However, career-wise, the dogshit far outweighs the golden nuggets....

    I see it like this:

Do you thank a doctor that helps your otherwise infertile wife to get pregnant with latest medical procedures, you guys have a baby and then in 3 years the doctor kills that child?

I do not thank Lucas for creating Star Wars, since he decided to destroy it, leaving us fans heartbroken.

IMO fanboys are way too harsh on Lucas for the prequels which, while disappointing to a certain degree, were not entirely bad films after all. I was very disappointed with The Phantom Menace and hated that annoying unfunny Jar Jar Binks, BUT on the other hand was in awe of Darth Maul and his double lightsaber, was thrilled to see the planet Coruscant (from the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, not a Lucas creation), enjoyed watching the on goings at the Jedi Council and totally had a blast with the 'Duel of Fates'. I found the 'Attack of the Clones' more enjoyable overall than the first one (mainly because Jar Jar had less screen time) even though I didn't like Hayden Christensen's Anakin not one bit. 'Revenge of The Sith' was the gem of this trilogy, while not perfect, I put it slightly above 'Return of the Jedi', the weakest link of the original trilogy.

To resume: Lucas disappointed us with the prequels mainly because our expectations were ridiculously too high, but judging those films by their own merits, they were actually good films. The Force Awakens will probably run into the same scenario of overwhelming high expectations and unless it is lauded as an instant classic, it will end up disappointing lots of fans.

If the original Star Wars movies were never made, and the prequels were the only thing we knew of the Star Wars universe, the prequels would be looked at very differently.

MI III was better than both Star Trek films combined IMO. I've watched both only once and seen MI III maybe more than 6 times and will watch it some more. Everything else you wrote I agree with including the fact that the first Star Trek was probably better than the 2nd, although that's not saying much either.

It will be an instant classic because, (yawn, sick of saying it now) JJ Abrams is #1 Director of this genre)
    No-one will be disappointed.

Wrong. Until James Cameron retires, he is still the #1 director of this genre.
