I watched star wars when I was like 8 or something. It was cool. Now I couldn't care less. These movies are for people who refuse to grow up.

    Absolutely.
I started to grow bored of this franchise even when I watched The Empire Strikes Back.

The first movie Star Wars - as I've always stressed and posted a thread about - was great even as a standalone movie.

The rest are just pools of diarrhoea.

Guys, you need to write SPOILERS like Sly did or like this:

Now that you were warned lets get to the specifics:
    • The Leia scene where she is blasted to space and she Force-pulls herself ala 'Mary Poppins' gotta be the most cringe worthy scene of the entire saga. This was so ridiculous, idiotic, I mean she almost froze but pulled herself back to safety and is in a coma??
    • The bond between Kylo & Rey is a very lazy plot device that shatters almost everything we knew from past films (yes, Luke could send a message to Leia, trying very hard, mind you, and Vader could also do the same, but not see the surroundings etc, much less touch hands). It was almost romantic and now we will be bombarded with girls dreaming about their love story.[IMG]
    • Where the hell are the Knights of Ren from the Force Awakens flashback? In this one Luke says Kylo killed all of the students therefore no Knights of Ren...dumb...[IMG]
    • The big reveal about Rey's family turned into a huge disappointment. I mean why the first film made such a big deal about it only to be 'your parents were drunkard losers who sold you'?
    • Same with Supreme Leader Snoke: we never knew who the dude was, where he came from, how he got a hold of Kylo, how he became Supreme Leader...he was just there boasting how powerful he was and couldn't foresee Kylo's plan to slice him like Darth Maul? Talk about an undeveloped character![IMG]
    • So Luke Force projects himself to the other side of the galaxy and dies from just doing that? Really? For having a Skype conversation? What a letdown! Luke Skywalker deserved a more heroic demise. Not just faking a duel via hologram. This film is so moronic it has the brains of a porg. DAMMIT, WHERE IS GEORGE LUCAS WHEN WE NEED HIM!!!!

When you get to the root of it, this isn't a particularly good franchise.
Using a very basic scoring average based generally on people's opinions of the movies:
    Star Wars 8/10
    The Empire Strikes Back 9/10
The Return of The Jedi 6.5/10
    The Phantom Menace 6/10
    Attack Of The Clones 4/10
    Revenge Of The Sith 6.5/10
    The Force Awakens 7/10
    The Last Jedi 5.5/10

    Not that good is it?

Two really good movies and one or two half-decent others just about gets a 50% hit-rate and %-wise you're looking at around 6.5/10 per movie.

Basically you'e got the first two really good movies then the hideous prequels, a so-so 'reboot' years later and the latest one.

it's interesting that Star Wars fans deep down just wanted the movie to be formulaic and predictable

It's more than that. It was like making a fast and furious without any car races. The film did not deliver. Plain and simple. They can chalk it up to "being creative" but it's bullshit. Plenty of legitimate non formulaic related complaints.

I love Star Wars but I've always said it was overrated and don't get the mass appeal really. I just know I like it for myself. I really think the long length of time between the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy and now worked to its advantage and made people long for it more than it deserved.

The flaws will be very obvious now that we are getting films every year and that Disney will be milking every dollar they can. The Last Jedi and Rogue One are testament to that. This stupid Han Solo prequel is next.

IMO, the mass appeal is a result of timing.
Star Wars caught the public just at the right time of cinema (mid-1977) following the first of the ´merchandise blockbusters´, Jaws, two years earlier.
    Lightning-in-a-bottle situation I think....

Shut up fool, you’re just trying to appear clever.

No timing or Jaws or any shit like that....it was something new that hadn’t been seen before: a space adventure with cutting edge special effects, magic and mystery, great villain(s), backstory etc. It was revolutionary as a package. Then Empore strikes back just solidified the mythology.

That's undeniable. Groundbreaking visuals and the franchise has always pushed the special effects technologies forward at the very least.

No, Im actually 100% right on the money.
Your knowledge of movies is very, very limited at best so how you can comment on something you only started watching 10 years ago is anyone´s guess.

A lot of people are shitting on the Star Wars movies because they are desperate to be hipster about things. If it's popular, they have to hate it.

Have the new films been as good as the originals? Of course not. But they couldn't be. Even if the new movies are better in every way than the originals, they still won't be better than the originals. The original Star Wars transcended just being a movie and became a cultural icon. Here, 40 years later, the franchise is as popular as ever, and that's not because of the movies being made today, it's because of the impact of the original. Star Wars changed the culture of the country in a lot of ways. Science Fiction became mainstream and we were hit with everything from Battlestar Galactica, to V, to Space Balls. Even franchises that pre-dated Star Wars like Buck Rodgers and Logan's Run only came back because of Star Wars. It literally took over the world. Star Wars became ingrained in our culture and it's influence and images are everywhere.

So there is nothing these new movies can do that hasn't already been done before a million times by the originals. If you try to compare them to the originals, of course they will fail. Not to the point of the review posted earlier written by some attention seeking, emo loser who cries about needing therapy, but they do fail. But if you just try to enjoy them for what they are on their own, they have been pretty good movies. Much, much better than the prequels pretty much in every way imaginable.

Nothing stays great forever. We're on our 9th Star Wars movie. What TV shows are still great after 9 seasons? Even the best bands, by the time they put out their 9th album, their best days are usually long behind them. It's impossible for a franchise that set the bar as high as Star Wars to remain at the level. Hell, the drop off started with Return of the Jedi, which while still an excellent film, doesn't compare to the original two.

So if people want to wet their diaper because the new films don't live up to their expectations, good for them. Rock on with your hipster selves. But to those with more reasonable expectations, the post prequel movies have been just fine. Not perfect, there are flaws (Mary Poppins Leia was awful, Casino planet completely unnecessary), but if you can only enjoy perfect flawless movies, maybe it's time to stop going to the movies altogether.

I completely disagree with pretty much this whole post.
You said if people have a negative opinion of this film it means they’re just trying to be hip. Then you go into a long winded rant about how people shouldn’t be expecting such a good product, never mind the multi-million dollars Disney poured into the damn thing.

So which is it? Is it a fine product and people are just trying to be hip, or is it a shit product but we shouldn’t complain and rather just be happy they made a movie for us at all?

Also don’t project your opinions as fact to make a point. Most people hated the prequels and lots of people thought TFA and TLJ sucked. All I’m reading from you is a bunch of excuses mixed with the need for consumers to lower their expectations because apparently it’s impossible to make these films good even though most Marvel films are of much higher quality.

Don’t try to convince us there’s some obscure reasons that a shit movie is getting all the negative reviews it’s getting besides it simply being a shit movie.

On its second weekend Star Wars: The Last Jedi took the #1 spot but with a 69% drop which is unheard of for a Star Wars movie. This is the kind of drop that The Force Awakens experienced in its fourth week! SWTLJ added $68.4 million for a current domestic total $365 million. Worldwide it has grossed $745 million. These numbers reflect how fans disappointment has affected this film's performance and can seriously put a huge dent on the acceptance/success of Episode 09 or worst yet, the whole Star Wars brand. In a way this might be a repetition of what WB went throught with Batman v Superman and how the lack of goodwill for that one hurt 'Justice League'.

Speaking of Justice League on its six week it has exited the top ten with a 75% drop from last week and descended from the 5th spot to the 13th with just $1 million gross. It currently stands at $222 million domestically and it will hardly go any higher than $227 million. Worldwide it stands at $646 million which is lower than Man of Steel and lower than Marvel's "Doctor Stange".

Man I really hope this film doesn’t make most of its money back and bombs the rest of the way. When negative word of mouth starts to hurt box office figures the way it did with films like Justice League, Ghostbusters and now TLJ maybe the studios will realize they have to put effort into these things.

Fans are letting it be known that even with popular franchises they will not support films that wrap pretty CGI visuals around shitty halfassed stories with zero character development.

These studios better bring it. And they need to read a lot of those negative reviews to see exactly where they’re going wrong.

Studio honchos don't read fans reviews. They think audiences are just sheep morons that can be easily manipulated. They will read the glowing critics reviews, will put on the blame solely on the marketing department; will fire some people from marketing and then hire Obama's campaign publicists because people still love Obama and hate Trump. So they will go for the 'love marketing'...and they will lose their clueless shirts again.

Which is EXACTLY why more people like ME are needed in the world to bring some 'objective stability' to movie reviewing.

If it's shit (and a huge % are) I'll say it.

Come on dude, leave that political shit in the political thread. That really brings the discussion down when you drag it over here and it almost feels like trolling.

Is not political. What I am saying is that they will get everything wrong because they are clueless toward why audiences are not loving this film. In fact I'll share this little animated video that pretty much sums up fans frustration.

Here is Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy recently showing proudly her feminist agenda toward Star Wars. Which explains why 'The Last Jedi" is just a $200 million feminist propaganda to 'Force' the PC SJW agenda down or throats.

and that fat ugly new feminist hero, Rose Tico, is the freaking Jar Jar Binks of this new saga: unfunny, extremely annoying and deserves to stay in a coma forever.
