Started this last night and even if you hate The Royal Family, and get over the very slight historical inaccuracies, this is essential viewing with great acting, set-pieces and production:

My missus decided it was something she wanted to watch for a change, lol, so I though ´Oh well, whatever´...turns out to be pretty addictive-watching...

When my wife gets out of her post election depression and sense of doom paranoia, we could start watching this.

I would gladly trade historical inaccuracy for a complete Tarantino revisionist version ala Inglorious Basterds of the monarchy being obliterated.

The concept of "royalty" is disgusting but what's much much worse is people out there who not only accept it, but practically worship them.

    I agree.
I also think the height of the 'concept of Royalty' reached a peak in the mid-80s to when Diana died - the press and media attention was fucking staggering, which in turn, made the British public adulation even worse. (add foreigners adulation into the mix and it becomes unbearable)

Agreed. I guess it falls under the same umbrella as celebrity worship but for Americans to be idolizing these royals is particularly disgusting.

Is it idolatry or weird fascination?
I asked an American woman about this and she said something like it being a combination of 'glamour, history and entitlement that just a small % are bestowed upon while everyone watches on in either sheer fascination, adulation or disgust'

My wife loves the Royal family...so, in 20mins when we start season 2 of The Crown, her going on about the Queen, Prince Philip, "that time we went to Buckingham Palace", Harry & Meghan, etc, and depending on how many drinks I've had (two, as of typing), the 10oz Cleto Reyes might make an appearance and things could resemble a Chavez x Camacho-esque body-attack:

It's absurd to me that the royals are even a thing still

I guess it's good for tourism and brings in money, that's the only reason I can imagine it wasn't done away with ages ago

True but The Crown is set from the end if the 1940s and running alongside them is all the historical stuff (if you like history that is).

Episode #1 of this new season focuses around the Suez Crisis...and effectively the end of Britain as a 'super-power'...

My wife is obsessed with this show and has it on everynight, but I've never cared to watch it with her. Maybe I should give it a chance.

The tourism argument is bollocks. There's no reason to have a Royal family in this day and age.

I liked season 2 because it focuses on historical events more: JFK, Suez Crisis, Profumo Scandal, Nigeria, etc

Princess Margaret is portrayed as the alcoholic, chain-smoking weaker sister accurately, King Edward as the traitorous weakling sponger that he was, Harold McMillan - weak-ass PM in charge of a country that all bur ceased to be 'Great'...etc

Matt Ward is the standout as Prince Philip.

    7.5/10

I watched sporadic episodes of season 2. It was good, but I still wasn't as hooked as my wife who binge watched the whole darn show. This series is definitely a girly obsession thing.

You have to be British to understand .

In principle I agree with you 100%. It’s a ridiculous concept and serves no purpose whatsoever I. Today’s society. However, again because I was born in Britain, there’s something enjoyable about having a royal family. They are ordinary people like you and me...but having all these titles etc makes them fascinating. I have no problem with the monarchy as a result....and it’s the only thing that keeps Britain even relevant and tourist worthy.

It’s no different to how all these people in North America follow the kardashians etc. People are wired to look for someone to worship I guess.

Tax dollars don't go to the Kardashians nor do they have any political power.

The lyrics to the British anthem are also the most disgusting thing ever.

And it gets (quite rightly) voted as one of the worst national anthems ever.
Dreary, plodding, downbeat and like you said disgusting lyrics (incorrect, too: says nothing about the fucking country it represents)

I have more admiration for the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, than in of any king or queen of England. For Christ, not man, is king.

Agreed. They are ludicrous. Of course you would have extra hate for it because of the mention of God...but nevertheless I agree with you. It's an embarrassing anthem.

Lol. Mate you're a good bloke and all, nothing against you personally, but that's bollocks. Hardly anyone gives a monkey's fuck about the Royal family where I'm from, the only time we get any 'enjoyment' from them is when we get a day off for some stupid jubilee or wedding. I actually don't mind William or Harry as people, they seem like good eggs, but the institution itself can fucking die.

You'll miss'em when they're gone. The institution is ridiculous but Royal Weddings etc are fun stuff.
