In this period (00-09), I think you have two masterpieces that stand head and shoulders above the rest. 1. No Country for Old Men 2. There Will Be Blood For the other three, I'd say: Children of Men City of God The Prestige Honorable Mentions: Traffic, The Departed, Mystic River, 25th Hour.
The Prestige was the best movie of 00-09 IMO, Mystic River probably #2. Gone Baby Gone deserves to be in the discussion IMO. Overall a weak decade for movies though, IMO.
Gone Baby should be added to my honorable mentions. And no, it wasn't a particularly strong era, but I do view No Country and There Will Be Blood as the 2 best films of the last 20 years.
Children of Men grew on me. First time I saw it, I was underwhelmed. But now I see it as the masterpiece a lot of critics regard it as.
1. The Dark Knight 2. City Of God 3. The Pianist 4. No Country For Old Men 5. Road To Perdition Honorable mentions: Old Boy, American Gangster, Requiem For a Dream, There Will Be Blood, The Lord Of The Ring Trilogy
Oh shit, forgot about Road to Perdition. That's certainly top 10, and has a case for top 5. Great movie.
The Hurt Locker, 21 Grams, Black Hawk Down, Borat, Children Of Men, Inglourious Basterds....a ton of good movies left out...
There Will Be Blood No Country for Old Men Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Prestige Lost in Translation
Upon further reflection, I came up with this list: 1. The Prestige 2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 3. Mystic River 4. Match Point 5. Gone Baby Gone Runners up: Master and Commander, Michael Clayton
Michael Clayton was a good movie and so was Master and Commander. I know these are subjective, but I kinda feel like a top 5 of the 00s list needs at least 1 outta No Country or There Will Be Blood. Both are rightfully considered masterpieces. There Will Be Blood was essentially the best film about greed corrupting/changing a man since Citizen Kane.
Not a great film decade, aside from there will be and no country, two all time standout films, I would then add Mulholland Drive, City of God, A Prophet, and 1-2 from Spirited Away, Wall-E or Up
