Yep, victims should keep their mouths shut because it helps predators when they do. Predators should never be brought to justice. Why would anyone want to publicize this? It could lead to something bad like other victims coming forward and maybe pressing charges. Why would anybody want to do that?

Does Ray speaking out about this 40 years later and not mentioning the name of the coach really help anyone? Did you consider this before you attempted to be clever?

 

It could. If a great athlete is brave enough to talk about it, then perhaps other people who know about such or have experienced it also open their mouth and stop worrying about their 'manhood'. Telling names won't help much, telling that this stuff happens just might.

 

Actually it may help other people since anybody involved would know exactly to whom he was referring. Maybe he wanted to see if others had the same issues. It's never too late to bring someone to justice for sexual assault. I considered a lot before I made my post, including the courage it takes to speak out about this kind of thing---especially when some moron comes along and says he shouldn't say anything.

The ol' he-should-have-kept-quiet response is what a lot of predators rely on from their victims, which is why I thought your post was deserving of sarcasm.

If the victims speak out, they might be helping someone else who is too afraid to do so. Having a celebrated athlete like Ray come out with this could encourage others who suffered through this type of crime.

Have to agree with you. Could a 17 or 18 year Ray have knocked that guy out with a jab? Probably, but a big part of everything is psychological.

This was a guy that Ray obviously respected, relied on, an authority figure that obviously had a psychological hold over Ray.

Ray probably was too shocked and confused to react.

Exactly. The relationship's basically structured parent-child or even more unbalanced. The coach tells Ray what to do, Ray does it. The coach gives advice, states opinions, Ray listens. Ray says something the coach doesn't like, Ray does press ups. There's years of day to day precedent in how they relate to each other, far too many for a kid to just start kicking fuck out the guy spontaneously, no matter what. In salesman speak he's at the top of humungous 'yes ladder'.

Even between hetrosexual adults, this kind of thing is often a sackable offence (Doctors, lecturers etc) - massive abuse of power and influence. :shit:

Some people are paralyzed by fear or shock---particularly when they are assaulted by someone they trust and/or fear. It's not like Ray paid the guy $20 afterwards.

I think some of you don't realize just how scared or in shock a kid could be---even if the kid is a teenager.
