That's not true but even if it was, who cares if it still gets you wins? He was a good fighter and he DID have fast hands.

Anyway, I don't want to ruin X's thread so I'll leave it there

Its interesting that older fighters never get mentioned. Who were the fastest fighters before 1960?

Ray Robinson for sure has to be mentioned.

I reckon someone like Kid Gavilan too. He looked quick handed enough in the films I saw.

  4. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

Charlie Brown was faster than Calzaghe

Part of that is Because Old Farts like Bert Sugar, etc., Insist the "Film Doesn't Do Justice" to the Hand Speed of Old School Fighters...

Henry Armstrong had Legitimately FAST Hands...Ditto for Ray Robinson, Obviously...Per the Jess Willard Fight Film, Jack Dempsey had Fast Hands Too...

always seemed to me like old timers put more into their shots & it was more about hurting guys, less about scoring points. fighting off centre definitely isnt conducive to flurrying either....conducive to punching harder and not getting hit as hard but not putting 4 or 5 shots together. Those are factors, imo

Obviously Robinson was extremely fast. Gavillan as well, as PR pointed out. Ezzard Charles also had very fast hands, and Joe Louis in his prime had very good handspeed.

Personally, I wouldn't include Khan on the list. He's just short of throwing both hands at the same time. Most of the time he flurries he hasn't brought the other hand back to properly protect himself.

Floyd should get more consideration even though he doesn't throw a ton of combinations. In fact, I'd rate him above Pacquiao. Pac has quick hands and quick counters but in terms of how fast a punch gets from A to Z Floyd wins that hands down. We saw clear evidence of that in May.

In one off shots, Floyd's jab and straight right hand are fast and straight. As fast as folks give Leonard credit for being, he tended to throw wider shots than Floyd. Mind you, Leonard would have kicked Floyd's ass, but in terms of handspeed I'd still go with Floyd.

Yeah I agree. I think Leonard was definitely faster than Floyd, especially a 147 pound PBF.

And Leonard was also just as quick minded and sharp with his instincts that I don't think Floyd would be able to land sneak right hand leads on him. I could see him frustrating Leonard with his defense and making him miss, but I can't see clear advantages even in speed for him.

  15. Slice N Dice

Floyd was definitely quicker to react than Manny but Pacquiao was faster in terms of pure speed. The fight this year means fuck all and is no indication of anything.

Yes. I think you're looking at flurries and how fast those punches come off which is what I said above. I don't consider that speed. That's quickness. Floyd is an extremely straight puncher, moreso than Leonard was. The fastest route to any point is a straight line. Shoe shine punches never meant anything to me. If that's the case Oscar De La Hoya would make the list just like some mentioned Khan.

And to be clear, Floyd wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell against Leonard. Leonard was taller and had a longer reach which means Floyd couldn't get comfortable in a defensive shell.

I'm not looking at flurries at all. I'm looking at the combination that Leonard knocked Dave Green cold with, and the barrage that he knocked Andy Price cold with. Floyd never displayed HANDSPEED/QUICKNESS like that in any fight.

Only thing I'll give Floyd over Leonard is that has better defensive reflexes. But handspeed wise, he's no Leonard.

Floyd is really top notch against the shorter opponents. Put him in there with a guy with some range and a jab like odh and he really struggles. It's why most of his career has been with the Carlos Hernandezs and Marcus Maidanas.

I actually agree with Double. The ONLY fast handed prime fighter Floyd ever faced was Judah, and Zab made him look almost slow until his weak mind started to kick in.

Oscar, Manny, and Shane were all WELL past their quickness primes when Floyd fought them.

Whereas Leonard made a PRIME Benitez (who was very quick handed) look slow all night long, and matched quickness with prime Hearns, who was lighting fast.

I repeat, Floyd did NOT have faster hands than Leonard.

Don't forget that left hook-right hand combo he put Gonzalez down with. That speed was SICK.

Having straighter punches has very little to do with actual handspeed. Tszyu was a straighter puncher than Leonard as well. Did he have faster hands? Arguello was a straighter puncher than Mosley, but who had faster hands?

Floyd is one of the most accurate punchers of all time, but in terms of actual handspeed, Leonard was a level above. Judah would have never made a prime Leonard look slow before burning out.

Just saw press photos. Damn if pbf hasn'the found another welterweight shorter than he is.

Bingo! How the fuck do you find 11 welterweights in a row shorter than 5'8? No way thats coincidence.

Pure coincidence. Also Mayweather would have boxed the hell out Williams and Margarito and they didn't deserve to fight him anyway.

Up next for Floyd - Kevin Hart.

Arguello was arguably the straightest puncher of all time, yet his handspeed was only average. He was great cause of his perfect technique, and his great power.

Whereas a guy like Judah has always been wild, yet had tremendous speed.

What's so hard to understand about that?

Floyd was a more precise puncher than Leonard, but he did NOT have faster hands.

You talk about Leonard's "flurries" like you're referencing the Hagler fight, where Ray's strategy was to flurry and move.

Prime Leonard at 147 threw FULL POWERED combinations with phenomenal handspeed.

Margarito and Williams didn't have cars. They didn't live in the big boy mansion. They didn't hang out in Dubai.

I didn't say straight punching is handspeed. Probably why you're having difficulty grasping the concept.

  30. Jones, Leonard, Hearns, Mosley, Robinson, Patterson, Tyson, Ali, Camacho, Taylor, Pacquiao

Mayweather doesn't have particularly fast hands, and so shouldn't be mentioned anywhere near this list. Mayweather has fast reflexes, movement, counter punches and so he appears faster than some fighters that actually have faster hands than him. Diego Corrales had faster hands than Floyd, when you consider the ability to string punches together, but you would never know that from their fight because of the other factors.
