James Toney had fast hands. It's just too bad he ran into Roy Jones.

Yeah, Corrales was not as fast as Floyd.

Granted though, Chico's handspeed was really underrated. Dude had lead feet, but very quick hands. He could double up on that hook with lightning speed.

There are different ways to measure speed.

Pure handspeed, IMO, is how fast you can string punches together in combination. But other people may have different criteria, and that's fine.

In terms of stringing punches together one after another in a combination, Chico was faster than Floyd. Very underrated in this regard. Dude was faaaaaast!

Mayweather, however is among the fastest ever at "make-you-miss-make-you-pay" one punch counters. Historically very few could match him in that category and perhaps only Roy Jones actually.

In a fight, the latter is more impressive than the former, and is the one you notice. You see when they fought, Chico wasn't able to unleash his combinations because Floyd wasn't stationary long enough for him to do so, and he was getting stung by the said fast counters....discouraging his offence. So all you saw was Floyd's speed as Chico's was made sterile.

Of course you have to understand the sport before you are able to grasp these simple points and so I'm sure they are falling on deaf ears for the most part but....

he that has an ear, let him hear.

In the fight it didn't look like Chico was faster at anything than Floyd. He looked like stuck in mud or something. It makes a difference to string punches together against a fading Freitas compared to Floyd. I didn't see him stringing together much successfully.

I was about 10 feet from the ring watching Mayweather jr outspeed corrales all night. hands, feet, mind, whatever you can think of Mayweather jr was 2 to 3 steps ahead of corrales speed wise

Again....I refer you to my above points.

Corrales wasn't allowed to display his handspeed (or Power) simply because Floyd was a moving target and was killing him with counters. Floyd's style and type of speed nullifies pure handspeed. So Corrales was made to look slow simply because he wasn't allowed to get off punches.

Give Corrales a stationary target, like say Castillo, and you see how fast his hands are when he lets them go.

his hands are not slow, but they are not as fast as mayweather jr. not with single punches or multiple punches. go watch some fights at super featherweight where mayweather jr threw combinations. his hands were faster.

Agreed with Neil. Floyd at 130 had very fast hands. Not Jones, or Leonard fast, but extremely fast.

Floyd was quicker than Corrales in terms of trigger/reaction speed and also in terms of getting his punch to its destination. I also agree that Corrales was no slouch himself which is why Floyd's hand speed is not to be scoffed at.

This discussion shows you that blazing handspeed is only as effective as the person's timing and reflexes. If you don't have the defensive and offensive reflexes to match, your fast hands have limited effectiveness.

Back to handspeed though, Floyd Patterson had ridiculous handspeed. P4P, probably the fastest of all. He rivals even Roy Jones. When I look at footage of most of his fights I ask myself if they have sped up the tape.

Still, although he had faster hands than Ali, you wouldn't think it when you watched their first fight (second fight was irrelevant because Patterson was over the hill then and Ali was post-exile). Goes to show you that once again, defensive and offensive reflexes trumps handspeed.

Good for you. I saw a low pixel resolution youtube video years after it happened and saw the exact same thing.
