    man.. the vest sounds nice.

I have the leg weights and some dumbells I can put in a backpack if I want..

I'll tell you Buddy.. this week I decided to do it on Saturday for some reason.. I did it today..

I tried instead of 10 sets of 10 I tried doing 20 sets of 5

I thought doing 5 reps is easy and 20 sets would be nothing..

for some reason.. it's the first week that my tendon/ligaments hurt! right on my right arm where the bicep attachs is sore..

so for me.. less sets of 10 is better than 20 sets of 5

    are you doing it tomorrow?

I'll see how many I do tomorrow, but rather than attempt the 100, I think I'll first go 5 and then 10lbs to see how it feels. I was a hair away from doing 25 consecutive chins, so sets of 10 are easy. I'll post my results tomorrow.

I could handle it. Today being Sunday, I am thinking on whether I should go to the gym or no. It might be the thickest, most powerful blizzard I've ever seen outside. Thank goodness I have all the equipment here, but it is definitely nice to go to the gym.

I even have a plate-loaded gripping machine in the basement. Treadmill with an LCD tv, and a mess of UFC and Pride Fighting Championship DVDs. I'm set either way.

And actually alcohol does help with soreness. After slow-pitch softball games, a bunch of people I knew used to have 1 beer after a game because it helps relax the muscles. Of course, I tend to have beer and then a shot of whiskey to cut the cholesterol.

Today, I'm chilling. I might do the chins a bit later, but right now I am spending some quality time on the couch with my wife and our unborn son, riding out the blizzard. Peace and chicken grease, everybody!

chillin is alwyas good too Buddy..

You know, I do my 100 chin days.. every either saturday or Sunday and I do pushups mon-fri but at least one day a week I dont do ANY chins or pushups... I think that it's important! But.. what is funny is like Saturday I did my 100 chins.. then Sunday I decided would be my day of rest.. no chins or pushups..

you know how HARD it is..? after doing 100 chins on Saturday, to do NONE on Sunday!!?? Everytime I walk under my chinning bar I just feel compelled to grab it and crank some out.. yesterday I resisted

I went to the gym at lunch. I did 10 chins with a 10lb weight hanging off me. I did 6 for the next set, but I could have done way more. I didn't want to wear myself out before squats though and then I did 365 for 8 and 385 for 3 easy. I could have gone heavier but I had to do my other exercises. In a week or two, I'll be squatting 405 for 6. Heck, I'll probably do it next week. And that's not even pushing myself hard.

I'm gonna start doing chins everyday though. A bit at a time like that article said. Then I will get up to serious upperbody strength in no-time. :bears:

That article talks about doing chins everyday. I think I'm going to do that and gradually build up the number of chins. Perhaps I'll keep a tab in this thread just to give it a bit more energy...although it's doing ok now.

    Cool.

Well, I plan on doing sets of 2-3 throughout the day. Just got home, and as soon as I got my shoes off, I went downstairs and banged out 3. I'm a bit tired from today's workout, but that makes it 19 in total for today. Heck, at this rate, I could do 100 per workweek (5 days).

My back and arms feel like rock though almost all the time now. :bears:

Edit: Heh, maybe I feel so tight because I forgot to take my longsleeve office shirt off.

3 took a little bit of effort, but I just brought down the ankleweights that I used at the gym today, so I banged out 2 more. This is gonna be easy!

you struggled to do 3 chins when you're usually able to do 10.......surely that means to take a day off and rest a bit

    :dunno:
i thought the whole idea was to not overtrain and to stay reasonably close to your peak strength

Actually I didn't struggle. I said it took a bit of effort, but I didn't STRUGGLE. If I had struggled, I would have done 10-15 reps. That's the point. Make sure that each time you do the chins, it doesn't require any psyching up or real effort. That's when you know that doing the chins is really easy. I make sure that when I do them, I know I could try hard and do 10, but instead I make sure they are really easy to bang off quick.

The whole point IS not to overtrain, but also to make chins an everyday, ordinary, non-stressful occurrence. When you can do that day-in, day-out, you know that your daily strength is increasing.

So each time I go downstairs, I do a few chins. If I do that everyday, which is something I didn't do before, then it stands to reason that I'm gaining upperbody strength. :stir:

So I do 2 each time I go downstairs. That should be 10-15 reps per day at first. Then next week I'll make it 3 each time I go downstairs. I'll gradually increase it or increase the width of my hands from each other.

Buddy that is excatly what I did! I have it in my master bedroom/bathroom doorway, every time I went in there I'd do a few..

    it is pretty amazing..

10 years ago when I was training a lot and worked at the gym I was good for 30+ chins and would do some with heavy weight also

before I moved last year I put up a chinning bar at my old house, I was SHOCKED that I could Barely do 3!! I felt like a weakling!!! of course I also weighed more than before as well...

I started doing 2 or 3 pretty reguarlly.. then 5 then 6 or 7 now I pretty much do 10 every time I go in there. I have not re-tested to see how many I can do but I can do 10 now realtivily easily. I do feel like the 100 chinup sundays (or saturdays) seems to help a lot! Each week after doing 100 in a day, the rest of the week I feel I can add 1 or 2 to my dailys

I'm pretty sure that it activates stubborn muscle fibres or something because after I do it, my other exercises feel so much easier.

I'll be at it in the gym today. Good way to build the strength.

I agree.. there is something about it that makes it work better than other exercises IMO..

If you go to the gym and you see a guy that can chin a lot.. get him on a lat pulldown and he'll do alot

    BUT..

get a guy that can pull down a lot on Lat pulldowns but does not chin.. have him try to chin and he wont be good at it

I have read its something about pulling yourself (weight) to a stationary thing (bar) as opposed to pulling a weight to yourself:dunno:

My guess is that all the smaller stabilizer muscles get worked better and so your body gets overall stronger, not just in one area. It's like doing leg presses, which are ok, but then doing heavy squats, which are fantastic for your whole body in terms of strength development.

Ah well, we'll see how it goes today.

    true..

you know what I been doing? when I do my chins.. I put my legs out in front of me and slightly upward.. like a V almost.. it really taxes your abs while you chin

I bet. Myself, I get a bit of lift from doing kneeups when I'm chinning near the end of my sets (not the household 2-3rep minisets). That's how I was a hair away from cracking 25 consecutive chins. Still, at a bodyweight of 215, that's not bad. I gave up on trying to get really light and instead I decided to just trim off all the bodyfat I can and just be all muscly instead.

Off to the gym. Will update after lunch!

Good lunch workout with 3 sets of three chins sandwiched in between my other lifts. I think I may have tried a bit hard on the last set so I'll go back to sets of 2 when I get home just to keep it light and easy. I can't imagine how strong a person would get if they incorporated an hour of treeclimbing into their daily schedule.

They couldn't do it all at once, but starting off with 5 minutes a day and then gradually building up would give you freakish strength and power. It is something to look into this summer. :eeeek:

I occasionally throw in some palms out and wider grip but Chins is really what i like

Shoulder-width overhand grip. It'll get wider as my ability improves.

Buddy are you finding your forearms growing like crazy too? I have done lots of grip training in the past but these chins are making my forearms ridiculous
