Everyone keeps saying that about Cotto but his year so far has been Oktay Urkal and Zab Judah. Good wins, but nothing special. For that, how come nobody's saying that Shane is a leading candidate for Fighter of the Year if he beats Cotto?
I thought Quintana was this year but I just checked and it was in december, so yeah, you're right, it's good but nothing to write home about. And I agree with you, if Shane beats Cotto, he'll get serious consideration for fighter of the year. Collazo was no bum, Vargas, for the way he beat him in the rematch, and Cotto would be a hell of a year. I think he could really win it. Actually, the winner of Cotto-Mosley will get serious consideration depending on how the fight went.
Cotto beat Judah a guy coming off two losses and a no contest. If Cotto beats Mosley it will be his first marquee victory this year. Floyd squeaked by old, inactive Dela Hoya in a fight a lot of people thought he lost (not me). Floyd's next fight is going to be Ricky Hatton, a guy not even in his current division. Nonito beat the #1 or #2 guy at flyweight and did so by knock out. If he moves up to fight Mijares like Shaw has promised, he'll be beating another consensus #1 or #2 guy in the superfly division. That would be two marquee victories against top guys in the division in their prime. To me that's what P4P is all about.
Don't hold your breath... When was the last time a flyweight won fighter of the year? Especially a not so popular one?
I'm not saying that the pinoy midget doesen't deserve it, just that it probably won't happen. I forgot that floyd iS supposed to be fighting hatton, if he wins, he's a lock. DLH may be old and past his prime, but it was the biggest fight of the year, while Donaire/Darch was an undercard on Showtime.
I also thought that he beat Quintana this year. But FOTY award doesen't always go to the guy who had the best wins, but who had the highest profile wins. Cotoo's wins over Judah and Mosley would definitely be higher profile than wins over Darchynian and Mijares. I am talking about Ring Magazine and their awards, of course.
Nonito is not a midget, he's only 1 inch shorter than Floyd. But you're right, most boxing fans don't know very much about the flyweight divisions. That's kind of sad actually, some of the best fighters are in those lower divisions.
:nono: He fights at a weight lower than 130 lbs. which is the midget cut-off, made official by Free Ike some years ago.
FIGHTER of the Year -Hatton or Cotto. Hatton beat a titleist (albeit a crappy one) and Castillo. Cotto beat Urkal and Judah both in devastating fashion. FIGHT of the Year - Vazquez - Marquez. Mormeck Bell II would have been an easier choice but the end of the fight was pure ass to watch ROUND of the Year - JMM - MAB round 7 UPSET of the Year - Nonito over Darchinyan or Mijares over Arce KO of the Year - Nonito over Darchinyan ROBBERY of the Year - Hopkins - Forbes TRAINER of the Year - Nacho PROSPECT of the Year - Linares
"A lot" of people thought Floyd lost to Oscar? Your opinion simply doesn't matter if you scored that fight for De La Hoya.
I actually think the winners of Mosley Cotto and Hatton Mayweather (if it happens this year) will be the likely FOTY
Quintana was last December, though I will say that if Cotto beats Shane in Nov, he'll have had one helluva run in the past 12 months (though just not all in one calendar year). I hear what you're saying on the FOTY award in general, I just think it's a shitty way of distributing it. By media standards, say Sakata were to fight and beat Nonito Donaire - they still wouldn't regard that and his wins over Parra and Vasquez as significant enough to qualify as the year's best run because not enough people follow the lower weight classes.
Which is what is wrong with boxing. People claim that there's no new talent, but they don't pay attention to the lower weight classes. 108-115 is STACKED with talent. The amount of marquee matchups is endless. Maybe because I follow asian boxing more closely those divisions mean more to me, but I don't see the talent in boxing decreasing one bit. :dunno:
they are stacked with talent. But 99% of EVERYONE does not give a shit about guys fighting who weigh less than 115 pounds. Weight classes that have less than 5 pounds in difference from the one above them and below them are just fucking stupid. 120lbs should be the bottom weight class, going up from there 15 pounds at a time to HW(195).
Donaire for FOTY? Mijares has a better claim than he does and he's not the FOTY either. It's Sakata and by a mile.
Well that's not the way boxing weight classes are setup. If everyone thought like you did, we would've missed guys like Jimmy Wilde, Michael Carbajal, and Ricardo Lopez. Were those guys careers pointless? :dunno:
Could they have hung with fighters at 120? Probably so, who knows maybe it would have brought upon better fights making them even better/bigger in the sport.
I don't think it's necessarily fair to ask someone like Ricardo Lopez or even Ivan Calderon to come up 15 pounds to fight guys like Rafael Marquez, or Celestino Caballero. The 105, 108, 112, and 115 weight classes are completely valid.
REED has the UTMOST Respect for Lower Weight Fighters, but having FOUR Divisions from 105-115 is Tooooooooo MANY... No Matter WHAT Size U R,it should Take NO MORE than 2 Divisions to Cover 10 Lbs... REED:nono:
