Yup - this is a tough one; as around '88 Hill was arguably at his best....and for all of his performances at 175 lbs.; Hopkins IS advanced in age.

However, I can see Hopkins taking this for a rather simple reason: he is very good at taking away his opponent's jab. And that is Virgil's critical weapon - not to mention that for all of Virgil being a natural Light Heavy, he wouldn't enjoy a height advantage vs. Bernard - and would only have a very slight reach advantage.

Virgil would also be looking at a right hand that can give his own a run for its money - especially since Hops leads better with his.

To top it off, Virgil was not a physical fighter - while Bernard definitely is and can be.

If Hops takes away the jab and fights Virgil the way he fought Tarver - pushing him back, coming forward in angles, putting together combinations and being selectively aggressive - I can see Hopkins winning, simply because of the styles.

Virgil would insist on keeping it outside and trying to use his jab - and that might be his downfall.

    Peace.

    Good catch....I don't.

John is good - and can be quite 'negative' - and I was one of the very few saying that would be a tough fight for Marquez; given John's strengths, the styles match-up, and the fact that it was in Indonesia (even so, the actual decision was a terrible one).

What he has is the jab; and that hairtrigger counter right cross.

But it's a question of styles and Fenech would be on John from start to finish; 12 rounds, smothering him and working inside....he wouldn't let John breathe; and Chris would simply wilt.

Once Jeff gets past the jab - and he would - it's his fight all the way.

John does not have the power to hold off Jeff; nor the comfort level and skill inside in the phone booth to beat him once Fenech gets there.

    Fenech wins this one.

    Peace.

It's weird. I remember Roy looking a LOT smaller than Virgil when they fought, and Bernard isn't bigger than Roy. :dunno:

Yeah Bernard is tall. At least 6'1.

You'll notice his height advantage is often not very apparent though, as he has that cagey, crouching style.

    Yep...

Bernard RARELY "Fights Tall"...He Keeps his Chin TUCKED to his Chest & Often Fights w/his Legs Spread Fairly WIDE Apart....

    But N REALITY, he's a Tall Dude...N ALL of the Bernard-Calzaghe Staredown Pics, Bernard's Been Clearly TALLER...@ Joe's @ Least 6 ft Himself...
