His technique appeared good because it is easy to control a 3 ft. frame. It is completely different thing to be athletic and coordinated at higher weights. Power is too strong a term to ever be mentioned with midgets anyway

So it would be fair to say that lighter weight fighters who get KOs are decent with power given the circumstances since they usually have to land so many :dunno:

I think the biggest issue is that we all know people who walk around anywhere from 135 pounds and up regardless of height, but it's uncommon to see people smaller than that and to think of them as the average joe. It seems unreal.

So I'll admit that I watch whatever small weight class fighters are available to me, but I don't actively pursue it, and they're not immediate names in my head.

Having said that, I'm MUCH more likely to tune in to a small division fight as opposed to a heavyweight fight, because I like to actually see people throw punches without instantly becoming winded. It's ridiculous.

Horace Notice. His opposition was about as good. What's so great about knocking out a bunch of 105-pound fighters? Jimmy Wilde weighed less than 105 pounds for most of his career, and he easily knocked out lightweights and welterweights, and didn't duck anyone under 118. Lopez was scared shitless of a couple of 108-pound fighters.

George Foreman wasn't pretty but he had a 89% KO ratio (68 of his 76 wins were by KO).

I'd rather knock guys out impressively than dance around like a ballerina with a flyswatter at the lower weights.

That's why many prefer heavier weights even if the skill level isn't quite there.

Lopez beat the shit out of plenty of guys, his comp wasnt quite stellar but he was hardly some volume punching pillow fisted midget...For every calderon, theres a raheem, a steve cunningham, there are pillow fisted stinkers in every division...some of the best and most dramatic fights of the last few years including kyowa v mayol, monshippour vs somsak featured small dudes

Reed is on the money. boxing needs to eliminate some weightclasses. It would make the midgets actually mean a little. If I had it my way it would start at 110 and go up by ten pounds until 160. then up by 15 to 205. Above 205 would be HW. This would make a boxer actually fight somewhere near his natural weight, and make his ass actually do something to go to the next class up. The ONLY reason we have so many classes is so the ABC's can collect more sanctioning fees.

Any "fan" who refer's to these fighters as midgets and believes that they should be ignored, strike me as the oddest of all "fans". Your hate for them, says you want to look at larger, more "manly" men. It's strange. Almost homoerotic.

Fighters like Barrera, Morales, Lopez, Marquez, Too Sharp, Tapia, Hamed, Arce, Carbajal and Chiquita have been among the most decorated and exciting in the past 15 years.

I'll never understand how ANY fan can pick now to take a stand against "midgets", when we are suffering through the worst period of heavyweight competition, possibly in history. These fighters have filled the gaping hole that the sports glamour division has left and what do they get for it? "I hate midgets". Wow, such anearth moving statement.

    Good Post...

REED Certainly ISN'T Championing the "Diaperweights", Cause Below 118, REED Probably Couldn't Name 10 Guys he's Actually SEEN Fight...

But that SHOULDN'T Diminish what those Fighters Bring to the Table...& to Hear Keyboard Warriors Actually SAY they could Beat WORLD CLASS Diaperweights is a JOKE:lol: ...Quite PATHETIC, Actually...

These Posters THINK they're just Disrespecting Diaperweights, but they're Disrespecting the ENTIRE Sport of Boxing w/those Type of Statements...

Your Heavyweight Point was Spot-On...REED Wouldn't Think ANYBODY Would Prefer McCline-Peter II over Donaire-Darchinyan II...HOPEFULLY Not...

How can you call him an all-time-great puncher when all he did was knock out a couple of anemic jockeys? Jimmy Wilde was an all-time-great puncher. Lopez wasn't.
Are they any different from the people who ignore the heavyweight division?

I like the smaller weight divisions. Then again I like most all boxing so I guess that's why. I can appreciate skill whether a guy weighs 105 or 240. The lower weight classes also have some pretty great fights throughout the last few years. Anyone who won't watch those weights just because the fighters are small misses some great fights.

No. I could care less about any fighter below 126, unless they have EXCEPTIONAL talent.

I think one of the problems for us western fans is a lack of LIVE coverage.

I am sure most of you agree, it's great to watch fights on tape/disk, rewatch fights etc etc, ones that you know are good especially. BUT there is an extra level of excitement watching a fight live, even from your TV, knowing anything could happen. That's part of what makes boxing great.

And when you're rooting all the way for your guy, you almost feel like you can influence the fight if you concentrate hard enough

You can't root for someone on a tape delay.

For example - when was the last time you saw a live broadcast of a flyweight fight in Asia? Which is of course the lower weight boxing capital.

Indeed they would, both of them. I was just prompting him to remember that 122 has been a very talent rich division for a long time.

Don't forget, that's where Barrera, Morales AND Pacquiao made their names.

I dunno bout that. At 122 I'd call a guy like Wilfredo Gomez, or Morales an exceptional talent, not sure bout Marquez & Vasquez. But its debatable.
