My thoughts exactly. That's the type of fighter Rory is, he looks superb against B class opponents or even A- class, but then always comes up short and looks kind of average against elite fighters.
Really? I completely disagree. I thought Conor was winning. He took the steam out of Chode Mendes with some meaty body kicks, and hurt him with pretty much every punch he landed. All Mendes did was score a couple of takedowns and 1 elbow, basically. However, I do agree Edgar has the best chance against Conor than anyone - he is so well rounded and tough.
No doubt. The McGregor hype probably pushed some new viewers to the UFC. And if that was the first UFC card you've seen, you're probably hooked. Brown-Means and Pickett-Almeida would have been enough to sway casual viewers, but then you get the all time flying knee KO in the back-and-forth Stephens-Bermudez fight. I was exhausted by the time Robbie and Rory delivered the biggest blood bath in MMA history.
Mendes also landed some huge punches in Round 1. If there was one thing that impressed me about McGregor, it was his chin. He was unfazed by shots that have hurt or stopped some decent fighters.
Who did you think was winning? I didn't think Mendes landed anything that clean standing, they all looked like glancing blows other than maybe 1 right hand. Perhaps that was partly because Conor took them so easily. I agree his chin was impressive, and just his overall resolve and confidence. I do think he'll prove tough to beat by anyone, including Edgar. He also has an unbelievable 74 inch reach. He's 5'9, with a 6'2 reach. I started off thinking he was a bit fraud like, a la Broner, but the nearer the fight got the more I thought he'd beat Aldo or Mendes. Mainly because of the Poirier fight as I said before, who I think is very good.
That has a lot to do with his accuracy, Great timing and those Orangutan arms. He ain't the fastest guy but seems to be finding the chin very easily. Max Holloway fights similar but is a poor man's version and also lacks power. Mcgregor made him look silly and Holloway looked great before and after.
Even though I thought Mendes was winning the point battle, i thought McGregor was the guy winning the fight. Even on the ground Mendes whined about elbows to the head and didn't seem like he was dominating.
I was thinking the exact same thing while watching the fight. He is actually pretty slow for a welterweight, yet he is one of those weird guys that's slow but manages to find chins effortlessly and consistently. I guess his good accuracy, timing, and huge monkey arms really make up for the lack of speed.
Sad thing for Rory is that all 3 judges had him up by 2 rounds going into the fifth. He was badly damaged and I don't fault him at all for collapsing, but those scores will haunt him.
Don't you think those scores are bullshit though? Rory fought well and showed heart, and almost took Robbie out, but my impression was Robbie was winning pretty clearly. He looked the better fighter all the way through apart from that one stretch after getting whacked by the head kick.
Yeah no doubt. I think it was 2-2 at best for Rory after 4. By the end of the 4th Lawler had taken over again and you just knew he was going to close out very strongly in the 5th.
I had Robbie clearly winning the 2nd and Rory clearly winning the 3rd. The first round was mostly inactive, and the 4th was dominated by Rory at first and then Robbie at the end. Tough fight to score. I could see it 2/2 going into the last round, or 3/1 in either direction. Robbie just has that killer instinct late in fights when the other guy is fading. He almost got the 5th round knockout against Hendricks too.
I think this matches up with what I was watching and I thought Rory won the 4th. Rory didn't choke or anything, he simply couldn't take the pain. I'd say it was an involuntary quitting. He looked like Voldemort without a nose. The telecast did us all a disservice by not showing Rory after the stoppage.
That is alpha Males thing. They train year round to always be ready for a fight. With all the injuries in MMA now, its smart.
http://gfycat.com/FakeExaltedIchthyostega# Rory after the stoppage. People on sherdog and reddit were calling him a quitter when the fight ended. He would have won if he had fought for a few more minutes. He didn't quit; his body just gave out on him. There's only so much punishment someone can take before they shut down. He showed amazing heart just lasting into the 5th round.

So i thought Connor was bullshiting when he said those were glancing blows by chad on the ground, but when he took his glasses off, his face did not look damaged at all.
Yeah, I dislike Rory with a passion, but he gave everything he could in that fight. The dude's nose was broken in the first round, he was gushing blood from both nostrils, and had multiple other cuts. Rory should have no shame or regrets. He represented himself very well.

Last night set up possibly the biggest money making fight in UFC history with the Aldo / McGregor unification fight. :) Casual fans and new fans who watched last night for McGregor got to see one of the best nights in MMA history. McGregor / Aldo is bigger and more meaningful now.

I wasn't the biggest fan before, but I'll never look at him again the same way after last night. Some people are just born to fight.

Same here dude. Never cared for Rory and absolutely loathed him for taunting BJ Penn. But I have to admit he's gained a fan.
