Anyone who called Rory a quitter is an idiot but I have to agree, he looks a little gun shy in the big fights. Conor was pretty decent V Mendes. I was impressed with just how calm he was with Mendes on top. Most entertaining card I can remember
Mcgregor is pretty accurate standing up. i was surprised that even mendes (who i thnk has improved alot in the stand up dept.) froze when in a stand up battle. On the ground atleast mcgregor showed that he can survive , its not like every wrestler in the fw division is a chad mendes.
I just find it amazing that in 2015, Robbie Lawler is one of the best fighters on the planet. I've been a Lawler fan forever, but back in the day, at his best he was really good, but I never would've considered him great. Even his last few fights before his return to the UFC, he looked limited. But today? He looks amazing. He was stuffing takedowns like a prime Chuck Liddell. He gutted it out past the pain against Rory and ripped the victory right out of his hands. At the end of the 4th when Lawler kind of walked him down, you can see the 'Oh Fuck!' look in Rory's face. TFK
Agreed, I also find it pretty surreal Lawler is a true elite fighter now, and the best WW in the world. Please don't compare him to Lidell though, he's clearly better than mr Dead-Weight-Retard-Punch ever was. I still remember Diaz beating him up when Lawler was pretty hyped.
Lawler is not an elite fighter. He is in the right place at the right time. He wont have the belt long.
Of course he's an elite fighter, even if he does lose soon. You don't go on his recent run if you're not an elite fighter.
I'm just speaking of the way he defended the takedowns the other night. Prime Liddell was really good at defending the takedown. That was before people figured out they could take him down by touching his chin. TFK
I'd love to see Diaz / Lawler 2. Diaz doesn't deserve it and he's suspended from fighting anyway, but I'd love to see that fight.
The only reason I'd want to see it is to see Lawler avenge a loss and to see Diaz lose again. But Diaz should be worlds away from title contention. Today's Nick Diaz is pretty much just going through the motions anyway. TFK
Diaz was very competitive with Anderson Silva, a much larger fighter who turned out to be cheating. I'd give him a decent shot of beating Robbie. Too bad it won't happen. I think Nick can beat Robbie again. I don't give him a good chance of beating the top wrestlers on the way to a title shot. Condit / Lawler would be an excellent fight.
Anderson is on the downside too. Those Weidman losses took a lot out of him. Think of it this way, Weidman vs Diaz would be a ridiculous mismatch. I just don't think Diaz has it in him to be his best anymore, and he doesn't care if he loses. He would get hurt if it he fought today's Lawler with that attitude. TFK
What run? WHo has he beaten that is Elite? Timing is his friend right now. If GSP came back, he would destroy him.
GSP rarely 'destroys' anybody. Could he beat Lawler? Yes. Could he submit him? Sure. But 'destroy' him? Unless we have very different definitions of 'destroy', that's not happening. TFK
You see what Rory did to him? Lawlers face would look much worse since he is much more accurate. The Jabs alone would win the fight and bust him up. Koscheck 2.0
But Koscheck's standup isn't even in the same universe as Lawler's. No way in Hell GSP would stand with Lawler. TFK
I'm not sure about that anymore. Robbie has greatly improved his takedown defense, and GSP looked like he was declining as a fighter before he retired. I could see Robbie keeping the fight standing and winning by brutal knockout. Robbie is an elite fighter. He's the best welterweight today. He's not one of the all time P4P elite fighters, but he actually could be if he keeps winning.
Hendricks for one, the guy that arguably beat GSP :: If GSP came back now, him and Lawler would be a close fight, just like GSP and Hendricks was. The chances of him detroying Lawler are slim to none, and slim just left town. If GSP came back, who knows what form he'd be in anyway, I'd give Robbie a great chance of winning. at Koscheck. Josh is a 1 dimensional scrub compared to Lawler.
The only thing elite about Lawler is his power. He has been outmatched on the ground and the feet by mediocre opponents.
and @ "what run?". Like winning the title from Hendricks and defending again Rory is not impressive, plus his wins over Ellen and Brown are very solid too.
He hasn't been outmatched on his feet lately. He has improved greatly compared to his first run in the UFC and his Strikeforce / Elite XC days. He's the best he's ever been right now. He isn't a ground specialist, but he knows how to keep the fight standing and win. Hendricks is the best wrestler in the division, including GSP if he came back. Robbie had 2 close fights where Hendricks was fading and Robbie was coming on strong at the end.
Anthony is out of his mind. I think he's forgetting that Lawler is fighting at Welterweight. His issues with wrestlers and grappling was when he was fighting at 185 pounds. But even still, I don't think you'd find another human alive that would categorize Tim Kennedy or Jacare as "Mediocre". Lawler has NEVER been outmatched on the ground at 170 lbs. In his recent return to 170, even very solid wrestlers like Hendricks, Ellenberger, Koscheck and MacDonald haven't been able to control Robbie on the ground. I'm not sure what qualifies a fighter as "elite", but among his peers at 170 right now, Lawler is clearly the best of the best. One last thing, about GSP's jab, he wouldn't even get a chance to use it against Lawler. GSP would look for a take down within 10 seconds. Does the Dan Hardy fight ring a bell with anyone. GSP was far too smart to stand with Lawler even for 30 seconds. The kryptonite for Lawler right now is a guy name Stephen Thompson. I don't see anyone in the division dealing with his striking.
Both wins over Rory were impressive. I thought Robbie had zero chance in their first fight. That was the fight where I realized Robbie Lawler's comeback is for real. He's a lot better than he used to be.
