But then it is only one person at the top of every sport? or two if they have equal abilities?? So joe Rogan is wrong most of the time when he calls someone's this or that elite?
The guy thinks Ronda Rousey can beat top 10 men. The guy thinks Robbie Lawler is elite, but Tito wasn't. You are wasting your time.
Exactly. The funny thing is, Anthony thinks he's an elite judoka, and Lawler isn't an elite striker in his eyes ::
Shut up mikE, you pleB. You're wrong about almost everything you speak of. Tito got clowned by elite fighters, they proved loud and clear Tito wasn't in their class. The same can't be said for Lawler, who just beat an elite fighter to become champ. Who gives a fuck about his losses in the past, right now the guy is an elite MMA fighter.
Shouldn't elite fighter at least mean best of the best in any division then, in your eyes? Which would make around 10 fighters, which kind of tallies with my P4P list = elite as far as numbers go. For me, elite meaning literally the 2 best fighters in the sport is simply too strict. What is the #5 pound for pound fighter in the world, if not elite? That would mean Frankie Edgar for example, is not elite, but I believe he's very much a proven elite fighter. Speaking of Edgar, he's another example of a guy who is a brilliant all rounder, but doesn't really standout as being "elite" in any one category.
Are you a world champion in Judo? Have you beaten the best fighters in the world in your weight class?
A better question is, where are you ranked in the world Judo rankings? Are you considered one of the 2 best Judokas in any weight class in the entire world? If not, you're not elite, sorry, just using your own guidelines.
Joe is wrong about a lot of things. I think the UFC has alot of people that are elite at one or two things. I mean we can talk about Werdum, Souza, Maia. Those guys are Elite in BJJ. Then you can talk about guys like Weidman, Cormier, Cain, Davis. Those guys are Elite in Wrestling. But it's very difficult to find someone is all around Elite. And it should not be used often.
by your criteria weidman isn't elite in wrestling. Or Rousey in judo. I mean she only got bronce. GSP isn't elite in BJJ. Silva is weak in wrestling. Are you saying Silva wasn't elite since he isn't all around elite?
Let's try Anthony out for hypocrisy. What have you done in Judo that Lawler hasn't done in MMA? He isn't just a world champ, he beat the consensus #1 guy in the division, who gave GSP all he could handle. He also has 2 wins over the guy many considered the future of the division. Yet he is not an elite MMA fighter in your eyes, and you consider yourself an elite Judoka. Are you one of the 2 best Judokas in the entire world?
How out of my Criteria weidman not elite in wrestling? Or Rosey in Judah? Those guys are elite in a specific field. GSP is elite in BJJ. The Guy is blackbelt. But what GSP does is actually combine Wrestling and BJJ (MMA Wrestling) masterfully. Silva is weak in wrestling, but his isnt weak in BJJ and Striking, speed & defense. All are Elite.
If Frankie Edgar is not considered elite by our current definition, I submit a motion that we move to change the definition immediately.
You said something among the lines and I am using the other names now: If GSP is elite in BJJ what makes that Souza or some BJJ world champion. Elite elite?
Elite Striking, Elite Wrestling, Black Belt BJJ, Arguably only one legit loss. I consider Frankie one of the best in MMA. IMO he beat Aldo and was Robbed against Henderson Both times. I have absolutely no problem putting Edgar up there with the Elite Lightweights/Featherweights.
No. When guys like Gerrie Coetzee, Pinklon Thomas and John Tate were the heavyweight boxing champion, they may have been the best in the division on that particular day, but nobody would ever confuse any of them with an elite fighter. TFK
My feelings exactly. He is a great example of a guy who is not elite in any one area, but is good at everything, including toughness/endurance, and has no holes in his game. As a result, he's extremely hard to beat and is absolutely an elite fighter.
His striking is very good, but not Anderson Silva good. His wrestling is very good, but not GSP good. So yeah, I don't think he's quite elite in any single area, but as a package he's a true elite fighter.
Actually Edgar is not the best example. His striking is elite for sure. He's got the better of everyone standing, including Aldo. His standup doesn't look spectacular, but it's so solid and effective that it's definitely elite.
Who do you think Edgar should fight next? Aldo / McGregor might happen in January, so Edgar has time for another fight before his next title shot.
Speaking of striking, I'd love to see how Frankie goes about tackling McGreggles standing, with his obscene orangutan arms.
Frankie is McGreggles biggest test. Even more than Aldo. The Irishman's reach is 74 & Aldo's is 70. But Edgar has a 72in reach. Which could cause problems, especially with his speed. The Irishman will have to be on point with his accuracy and speed in order to do damage. And if Edgar gets him to the ground, it will be interesting. I honestly cannot pick a winner in that fight just yet.
WTF, are you sure Edgar has a 72 inch reach? That's a 6'0 reach and Edgar is only 5'6. What's with all these MMA fighters having long monkey arms? Edgar doesn't actually look like he has particularly long arms, Greggles' arms are noticeably long.
:bears: pavlik IMO is elite too! If you go to the mall and see some teenagers that think they are tough and compare them to pavlik there is a big difference! He has fought on TV and against other professional fighters
