I noticed all of us in press row were saying things like

    ESPN fight
    Gomez card
    Mora card

not one of us mentioned the Contender show running it even though we knew that.

the shine is off but in a way its nice because these guys can fight for their careers rather than for the name Contender

I agree with you for the most part - but the problem is, without The Contender money behind it, there won't be much of a career to speak for any of these guys. Perhaps it's why they're so willing to throw Manfredo in with Calzaghe and were pushing for Mora to fight Taylor. They know their guys have no shot in hell, but collecting 30% of such paydays helps recoup some of what they dumped into them.

Gomez lucked out in that he was the weakest fighter HBO was willing to accept as a Gatti opponent. But as he showed last night, and against Feliciano, it's already as good as it gets for Alfonso. He'll get a nice payday for the Chavez Jr. fight, once again get exposed as a clubfighter (though of course on the other side, JCC Jr detractors will continue to label him a bum beater), and probably land somewhere as an opponent on the Telefutura circuit once TOC ceases airing these shows.

Do you give Gomez any chance against Chavez Jr.? I don't think the kid is that good at all and think Gomez could pull off the upset.

I don't necessarily agree as, IMO, Mora was a local prospect starting to impress a few. In fact wasn't it prior to Contender Season I he was on the Budweiser Summer Fight Series against L Ralston I think. Who knows it may have helped him not being on the show overall. I know people will disagree because of the huge amount of exposure he has received but he has also gotten a lot of flack for being nothing more than a reality star. Also, he probably would have been far more active which in turn could have given him more of a chance to hone his skills.

Gomez I know benefitted hugely from the show but I don't think he is quite the club fighter you make him out to be. If anything he has improved in his last two fights (I thought he dominated Tackie) and has taken his career far more serious especially for these last two camps. He knows he had to take his career in a different direction as the fight with Feliciano proved. Is he a world beater? Nope not even close but its not a far stretch to see him reach top 10 status at welter. I think he beats JCC Jr personally as he is fairly relentless and has a solid set of whiskers.

Maybe your hate of the show is driving this but I see them in a totally different view because I remember when they were just guys who fought here locally.

I think Gomez beats Chavez jr. and I'm not a hater of Chavez jr. I just haven't seen much improvement from him. Gomez is not that impressive but he is a solit fighter who will outwork chavez jr.

I think he has a really good chance against JCC Jr, I would take him at +140 or better. He just looks like a natural in there, we know he has the heart, we just have to see how he reacts to big-league punches.
