In a somewhat surprising outcome (like last night's fight), underdog Madagascar 3 rose to the ocassion and did the circus afro dance after taking the #1 spot at box office with $60.3 million. The third entry in the series did a little bit less than the second film ( $63 million), but almost identical numbers to the first film. Families came in droves to watch the film since there hasn't been an animated kiddie film since The Lorax. Prometheus came in second place with a disappointing $50 million. While it is Ridley Scott second best opening ever, for a movie that was considered one of the most anticipated films of the year and tentpole for the summer season, these numbers are far below the studio expectations. Snow White &The Huntsmen fell a disastrous 59% drop in its second week with $23 million in the third spot. The Avengers took the fourth place with $10.7 million. If it can keep this pace it will finish its run with $600 million total gross, but with new releases each week is hard to tell if it will be able to hold much longer in the coming weeks among the top ten.
