Nah, Showtime in the U.S. aired it. I recorded it on VHS . UK fights weren't aired nearly as much back then, but Showtime started covering every Calz fight in the late 90s, I believe.
Jones-Tarver II was more SHOCKING than Tyson-Douglas, but Tyson-Douglas was the bigger upset. Especially amongst us hardcores, because Roy was thought of as the most invincible fighter of our lifetimes, and he was smoked by ONE SHOT in the 2nd round. Mike took a prolonged ass whuppin, so there was time to mentally prepare for what happened.
The WAY he lost was more shocking, but the armour of invincibility had been pierced somewhat in the previous fight, if you get what I mean. Where as Tyson looked just as unbeatable and it happened against a guy who was seemingly far less qualified than Tarver.
Point taken. I see what you mean, and I agree. I was also young at the peak of Tyson craze in the 80s. I know Mike was thought of as unbeatable, by everyone on the street. But purely in the boxing community, there's never been anything like Roy's aura. At one time, there seemed to be three certainties: Death, taxes, and Roy easily winning a fight.
Seems like that list cant quite decide between ‘most popular’ - in which case Manny could be the legit top guy, ‘most accomplished’ - I’d put Mayweather there, or simply ‘best boxer’ - ie most unbeatable: that IS Roy Jones Jr. They’ve got the correct top 3 for each of those, IMO, but it depends what criteria they are using for it. In any case the rest of the list is not consistent with any of them..
disagree. if rjj really wanted to fight lewis or holyfield, there's nothing tarver could've said to change his mind. plus, he would've made more money in those fights. that's giving tarver too much credit.
I doubt Roy fancied his odds against Lewis. But Holy? Well, he wasn't scared to fight the guy who by that time was having success against Holy. Prime Holyfield destroys Roy, but had they fought in 03, Roy would have outpointed him.
Like my post above.. this list cant decide whether its best, most accomplished, or most popular. While Ward may be better (ie win head to head p4p) than him, Canelo wins the more accomplished/popular between the two.
regardless, you implied the only reason he didn't make those fights was because tarver got under his skin and lured him into moving back down to 175. that's fanciful.
You said "If Roy really wanted to fight to Holy..." Well, he did. Holy turned the matchup down, not Roy. Holyfield, Toney get together by default "Holyfield, meanwhile, was in line to face World Boxing Association heavyweight champ Roy Jones Jr. and was negotiating for the bout with King, who promotes Jones, before rejecting it due to an options clause he refused to accept." You're the one who implied that Roy didn't want those matchups. He did. Roy has nothing to do with the incredibly corrupt shit DK puts in his contracts.
so was it the options clause or tarver's shit-talking? i just think if he'd wanted to remain at heavy he would've. i don't think tarver's talk was a deciding factor.
Much better is maybe too strong of a word, but his best wins are better, and he looked more impressive for the most part
While he also was protected and a couples of his wins have big asterisks next to them, Ward resume is indeed much better and in fact, it's not even close
Bar the kovalev wins, i dont think any of his other wins deserves an asterix (please dont say the kessler fight). Edit: i guess the Dawson win qualify
