As predicted earlier in my other thread, Disney Animation BIG HERO 6 took the top spot at the domestic box office with a three days haul of an estimated $56.2 million in what looked like a tight race with Interstellar on Friday when the Christopher Nolan space epic lead in its numbers by just $2 million, but then saw its numbers increase on Saturday & Sunday while the Nolan film saw a decline in his. This is another victory for the Disney Animation studio which for many years remained in the shadow of its partner company, Pixar Studios.

Interstellar took the second spot with an estimated $50 million on its Friday-Sunday grosses. Since the film opened to limited screens on Tuesday night (mostly IMAX) its total domestic gross is $52.1 million, still not enough as its studio was hoping for. If the film hold this numbers by Monday's actuals, then this will mark the fourth time in history that two films debuts with$50 million or more...but some are predicting that the actual gross will be $49 million. I'll keep you updated on this. Interstellar may not be the mega hit some expected, but it isn't a bomb either. Comparing it to other Nolan films, I think this one will do Batman Begins business with a domestic gross of $200 million or less.

Both BIG HERO 6 and Interstellar had identical budgets of $165 million.

On the third spot, Gone Girl came from behind and beat the two week winner Ouija (4th spot, $6 m) with $6.1 million for a six weeks total of $145.4 million. St. Vincent ascended two notchs to claim the fifth spot with $5.7 million. Nightcrawler took a dive from #2 last week to #6 this weekend with $5.5 million beating Fury by just some small change. John Wick takes the 8th spot with $4 million. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, no good, very bad day took the ninth spot with $3.4 million. And finally the unpopular animated film The Book of Life plunged from the #5 position to #10 with a 65.9% drop and $2.8 million weekend gross for a $45.2 million total. Expect the Blu-Ray/DVD release by Christmas.

Nolan never cared too much about BO numbers, but for anyone who does, never go up against a well advertised pixar/disney film. Interstellar did pretty damn good despite going up against them. I expected big Hero six to do numbers in the 90 mil.

    Dude,
Nolan may not care much about box office numbers, but the studio that shed its $165 million does. This is the first Nolan film since Insomnia that doesn't debut in first place. If the film underperforms, he will have a harder time getting another big budget project greenlighted. No one besides you was expecting BIG HERO 6 to open in the $90 million range plus that Disney Animation Studio (NOT Pixar) didn't had as much buzz as Interstellar had for the last 10 months or so.

if you think Nolan is going to have a hard time getting any movie greenlighted, you're out of your mind. Let's also not forget that despite not having as much buzz as interstellar, big hero six is a children's movie it doesn't need much buzz. All I need to say is from the creator of frozen and put on some kids cartoon commercials and you have a number one hit. You know how the game works. The fact that Nolan practically tied is pretty amazing

Dude, you are twisting my words. I did not said that. I said that if the film underperforms Nolan will have a hard time getting another BIG BUDGET PROJECT greenlighted. There is an old saying in Hollywood: 'you are as good as your last film' and in Tinseltown that is the gospel truth. Your theory about the children's film is not 100% accurate as 'The Book of Life' box office fiasco can testify. Interstellar did not 'practically tied' since it has been reported that the studio added the Thursday grosses to the weekend numbers to reach $50 million. That puts its actual numbers at $47.3 million!

i'm not twisting your words one bit. I said "any" movie. That includes big-budget movies too. Nolan will never have a hard time getting a big budget movie Greenlit. You're acting like this movie has bombed. Clearly it hasn't.

True. This will not affect Nolan. After many great films he can fail money-wise a couple of times and it won't affect him.

The makers of Wreck it Ralph made this movie. So it is a pixar movie that has been rebranded as a disney movie.

Wreck-it-Ralph was not a Pixar film, but from Disney Animation Studios. Pixar is an independent but partner company with Disney while Disney Animation Studio was created by Disney when they decided to let go of Pixar and save money.

Well, I clearly did not mentioned "any" movie which includes low-budget movies too. LOL. Again, I am NOT acting like this movie bombed. I said 'IF" the movie UNDERPERFORMS to the studio's expectations...is too soon to call any shots yet.

I want to take a break from my little Interstellar debate with Anthony to make a couple of observations about the #9 film in the list, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, no good, very Bad Day:
This is a clear example of Hollywood messing with something good and the end result is a complete aberration. The book on which is based is a modern children's classic which first got a highly entertaining HBO cartoon special adaptation. Like the title says the story is about this boy who is having a terrible, horrible day. It is something that children of all ages can identify with thus the charm of the story. But in the film the roles are reversed and it is Alexander's whole family the one having a no good, very bad day...which was done just to give its star, Steve Carrell, more exposure to cash in on its slapstick routine, resulting in a disappointing film which is aimed more at older audiences than the families that ran to watch the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' films. Which explains why a film (loosely)based on a beloved best seller bombed at the box office.
