It's as much about Spence getting the exposure, airtime and name win as seeing him tested. If he's as good as you think you should want to see get his name up there as cheap and easy as possible so he can more realistically call out the bigger names. A lazy, fat ass, scrubby local undefeated former world champ would be a godsend.
I mean hey, if by some chance Spence-Fig came off, I'd watch. It'd be a slaughter though, and afterwards cats would still be saying "When is Spence gonna fight someone?" I wouldn't pick Figueroa over Broner, let alone Spence.
Even with Spence not calling out Thurman anymore, "Run Time" is still hiding, only now from Shawn Porter it seems. athetic: The most annoying thing about all this is that I thought with Floyd RETIRED, fighters would actually be FORCED to fight against one another but I would argue it's worse now. Brook, Garcia, Thurman, Porter, Khan... And the rest of em... Somebody needs to send a memo to remind them and their promoters that this is the fight game. Welterweight is probably the hottest division along with junior middle (126-130 are up there also) and all these Al Haymon fighters are just ducking one another like no tomorrow. It's shameless.
Yeah, it's pathetic. It could be a pretty exciting era in the ww-mw range, but it seems every fighter is more concerned in pimping the game (fighting no hopper for big $$$) than really proving themselves. Perfect example is Thurman, whom I quite like, but seems hell bent on fighting no one who could have a shot at beating him. Add the PBC-HBO cold war and things are looking pretty dire. At least, it seems that Khan-Brooks is in the process of being made.
I'd take Van Heerden to beat Fig without a SECOND of hesitation. Fig went life and death last night with a SHOT DeMarco. Rances Barthelemy beat the crap outta DeMarco for every single round, and Fig struggled with him. And what's more, he lost to Burns. Figueroa is utter shit.
YOu have this weird fetish for Van Heerden. The guy went life and death with worse fighters than Demarco.
I'm looking at the names each fighter's have worth mentioning. Spence has the worst resume by far. He's fought absolutely no one that deserves ever being mentioned again. (He's 26, people here treat him like a 20 year old phenom.) Brook has a W over Porter. Porter has Ws over Alexander, Broner, and Malignaggi. Thurman has Ws over Chaves, and three old versions of Collazo, Guerrero, and that old PR ex chamoion who beat P Williams. Khan has the best resume but also has two losses. Ws over Maidana, Judah, Malignaggi, an old MAB, Alexander, Collazo, and Algeiri. Ls to Garcia and Peterson. Garcia has Ws over Matthysse, Malignaggi, very close wins over Peterson and Harrera. Agreed that there are some very good fights that could be made around 147. Hopefully we'll see Brook and Khan and Porter-Thurman and Spence with anyone of those.
Quintana. Agreed with your points. I'm just hoping some fights get made. The excuses have become sickening.
