That's a statement I made in the past, and some MMA fan on here (forgot which) jumped on me. Happy to see a fan such as yourself cosign it.

MMA is far more prone to random upsets than boxing is, and will always be that way.

Was me. Its a bullshit statement. Look whos the hw champion, jon jones, a guys that's been around for more than a decade.

There's less divisions and the best fight the best, so you can't milk a title like you can in boxing, but it's not a more "upset prone" sport than boxing

I don’t think you’re looking at MMA quite right. This type of opinion is, IMO, ‘dated’ (proven false..). Rather MMA sort of has an ‘ace in hole’ against ALL the martial arts. It’s not about who’s best at any style, or even who best at the most # of styles- it’s about who’s best at applying a myriad of techniques, and most importantly the transitions between them. You could take a fighter that IS objectively the best boxer, wrestler and jiu jitsu fighter, accomplishing top accolades in each individually, and it wouldn’t necessarily make them a champion, or even highly successful, in MMA.

MMA has in itself created its own sport, with it’s own moves that are unique to the sport. When MMA fighters box, they look sloppy and awkward- not (just) because they aren’t great boxers, but largely because the art of boxing applied in an MMA fight requires a degree of readiness for a number of counters and transitions that are entirely unique to MMA itself, thus making ‘MMA boxing’ if you want to call it that, a largely different sport than ‘boxing’. Same applies for all of the styles that fighters adapt to MMA. It’s not that top MMA fighters aren’t the best at the various styles they incorporate, it’s that they are the best at incorporating them, each fought in an MMA-style, into MMA, which takes an incredible amount of skill and training.

Disagreed, go to any MMA gym and they teach you standard boxing, not this special MMA boxing that you talk about. Truth is that most MMA fighters are really not that good of a boxer, especially compared to the other disciplines used in MMA. But that's because the best boxers stay in boxing, not because of some intrisically part of MMA that makes it unsuitable.

The rest of your post is mostly spot on though, the decathlon comparison isn't very valid imo since each of the competitions in that ''sport'' happen separately, while it happens simultaneously in MMA. Kind of like saying skating is better than hockey.

i have probably spent more than half my life in MMA gyms and this isn’t true. They don’t just teach normal boxing technique in MMA gyms. They teach ways to incorporate boxing into MMA without getting that single leg takedown, which. ANY boxer not trained to do so, is subject to.

Same with Thaiboxing, you can't rock that back foot teeping and grappling Thai style in MMA you get taken down in seconds. Lots of Thai fighters are trainers in MMA, but they don't train Muay Thai, they train certain Thaiboxing techniques that work in MMA with a tweak or two.

We had this discussion a while ago IIRC but I m still wondering how exactly are they teaching boxing differently ??? Wider stance? Lower stance (a lot of strikers used to fight that way in early UFC but not anymore)? Not to start a combination with a hook ? Get your lead foot in the inside??

I may he wrong but from my personal experience and considering that a lot of boxing coach for MMA fighters basically know nothing about MMA (Roach, Howard Davis) , there is basically very few difference in how it is taught. The only one that I often hear is that they don't teach the shoulder roll in MMA. But even then, that's not something that most boxers train in and I'd argue the reason is that it's not used in MMA is not that it wouldn't work, but that no one is skilled enough to do so effectively.

Of course that's not a knock on MMA fighters as they have to master a lot more things than straight boxing.

From what I see from my kid taking MMA classes, what Anthony says is very accurate. They certainly aren't teaching him traditional boxing techniques. I've been teaching him boxing technique on the side.

I very well could be wrong, not going to lie as my experience at MMA gyms is pretty limited. Still, would like to know what exactly is being taught differently, I've known some guys who were pretty deep in MMA and the only place I ever heard this argument is on fightbeat.

Btw, just saw a quote from Howard Davis on his transition to MMA coaching were he mentions both sports cannot be compared as yes the striking part is similar to boxing, but that s like only 15% of MMA (the rest being the ''ground'').

His instructor isn't really teaching him traditional boxing footwork and punch technique. Granted, he's young as fuck, so maybe I'm wrong they'll teach him that as he gets older and progresses. However, he was shown the boxing way to parry shots, I'll give his teacher that much.

I taught him how to properly throw a jab, cross, and hook with boxer-like leverage and balance.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and chalking it up to my kid being young. He's now progressed to a class with older kids, and will be using boxing gloves, so perhaps the technique is coming soon.

Even in the golden era of the 70s and 80s, it didn't work that way. Huge upsets were the exception rather than the rule.

Oh, absolutely. Trying to work in a clinch in Thai boxing for more than a minute without going down is virtually impossible on its own, and that's without the added dangers of all of the takedowns guys in MMA can use.

I'd imagine the techniques they teach you from Thai in MMA would be the way they torque their kicks and use their shins rather than feet. I've never seen a leg kick from another sport like the ones in Muay Thai.

All guys (and girls) that were top3 or 5 in the division...

Seems like boxing fans are so much used to see top boxers fighting no hopers, tjat they forgot what an upset really is

Weren't all of the "upsetters" you named at worst top 5 in the division (and in fact, most of them were considered second best, hust behind the person they upsetted)? And as i said, theres also a lot less divisions in MMA, so being top 5 actually means something.

If for you, that's some huge upset, i vehemently disagree. When the best fight the best, these things will happen frequently

They are upsets, that goes without saying. But they are not proof that mma is more upset prone than boxing
