Yeah Newcastle should be right up there, one-club city, huge fan base etc. Obviously right now it's because of Ashley and his padlocked wallet, but certainly in previous decades there's been something of a 'cursed club' vibe about them.
St James' really is fantastic and it's right in the heart of town - it dominates Newcastle the way the cathedral dominates Cologne. FITBAW TOON
Cracking place Newcastle. Maybe the only place in Britain which is (mainly) aesthetically pleasant yet mysteriously not overrun with rich wankers. Don't they know it's there yet?
Ashley will never sell NUFC unless he is offered stupid money for it. I cannot explain this often enough or more clearly. NUFC have been a massively successful investment for Mike Ashley. Since he bought NUFC ten years ago his net worth had almost quadrupled. He is now one of the richest fifty or so people in the country. His shop is never out of the media. His signage is never out of view. His adverts are shown to the whole world every time NUFC make the news. If NUFC don't make the news, he does something to make sure they do end up in the news. All this has cost him about £20m a year for ten years, with the almost certain guarantee that he gets every penny back if he chose to sell up. Fat cunt is going nowhere. MTF
Newcastle are a historically very successful club. Won fucking loads of trophies for the first half of our existence. It is our modern incarnation that cannot win a fucking tea cup. Having said that, we actively stopped trying to win anything about ten years ago. Nothing mystifying about that. MTF
Newcastle United will not win a major trophy in my lifetime. Of that I am certain. In the 1990 and early 200s we gave it our absolutely very best shot. Spent money, bought great players, built a fucking sensational side and two other very good ones, managers (Keegan, SBR) who 'got' NUFC, ambitious owners, built a world class stadium. Won nowt. Bunch of top three league finishes and some cup final non-performances to show for it. Nee pots. That was the sum of our best efforts. Unless some gulf state buys the fat cunt out, we'll not have a chance like that ever again. MTF
He looks like the embodiment of multiple risk factors for several chronic diseases, so let's hope he keels over from heart failure in the middle of one of his infamous boozing sessions
Do you think if Robson had managed the 90's Newcastle you would have won the league? Don't get me wrong, I love Keegan, you just get roped in to his passion and love of the game, but Robson was always the better tactician.
Why should Newcastle United be "up there"? Because they're a 'well-known', 'big' club who sell-out a stadium full of Geordies week-in, sell-out, and who've won totally fuck-all in the last 70 years? Or because 'Fightbeat-Fitba' MTG supports them? Pre or Post-Mike Ashley, they've always been shit. It's your move.
Robson was offered the job after Keegan quit. He turned it down because he wanted to honour his Barca contract. He said he'd come at the end of the season if NUFC would wait, but they wouldn't. Give SBR that Keegan side and they win at least something. No doubt in my mind about that. MTF
It's not a troll at all. e.g. Leeds United by all intents and purposes deserve to be 'up there' as well...
I'm a statistics person, so if we look at what you'd call our 'lifetime' (70-80 years give or take), the 15 most successful football teams in order, in England since World War II are: Manchester United Liverpool Arsenal Chelsea Aston Villa Everton Tottenham Hotspur Manchester City Sunderland Blackburn Rovers Newcastle United Nottingham Forest Leeds United Wolverhampton Wanderers Sheffield Wednesday This is based on trophies won: Football League (Division I and II) • FA Cup • League Cup • European Cup • UEFA Cup And a points system based on end-of-season standings in Divisions I, II and qualifications/finishings to European tournaments. Fascinating stuff. I surprised myself.
I know you were trolling but I'll answer anyway. Yes the support and catchment area obviously come into it, just look at some of the players that have come through Newcastle/Wallsend Boy's Club. In the 90s and early 2000's they were right in the mix, both on and off the pitch, as in they were the second richest club in Britain and fifth richest in the world at the turn of the millennium: BBC News | FOOTBALL | Man Utd 'richest club in the world' So yes, they are a big club, that much is obvious. Not sure why you brought up the other clubs but yes, Villa and Leeds are both massive clubs too, for what it's worth.
Just watching Match o’ The Day 2... the Man City fluorescent socks are making me mad. Nice goal from Sterling, mind.
Exactly Fucking ludicrous The European Cup is the biggest prize in club football... it has to be weighed massively... Forest has two of them
That list only makes sense if all the cups are weighted the same and there's no difference between winning the first division and the second division which is preposterous
In short, Mustard deserves a red card... and by "red card" I mean "kicked in the face repeatedly until it resembles a claret pizza"
Exactly. Forest should be out of sight in comparison to fuckin' Blackburn. Portsmouth have two league titles and an FA Cup since WWII, surely that would put them above Blackburn too.
So they deserve to be 'up there' based on: a) some good players b) lots of money There's a reason they're way down on the list of 'successful' clubs. Your and cdogg' s arguments hold no water: like or it not, Newcastle United are just another one of those mythical 'sleeping giants' who, as MTF pointed out in all honesty, "will not win a major trophy in my lifetime. Of that I am certain" Ditto Everton, Villa, Leeds, etc MTF's being objective, I'm being statistical and cdogg is being all 'romantic'.
