Ibeabuchi and Tua very likely did ruin each other. Neither were the same after that fight. And I wouldn't really say they amounted to nothing. They were both legit contenders, Byrd was a titleholder. But the point I made that you completely missed is that they each did one thing very well, likely better than anyone else in the division at the time - and Ike was able to compete with & beat them on their terms. Byrd followed up his loss to Ike by making Vitali miss wildly so many times that he dislocated his shoulder, and then went the distance with a young Wladimir - who wasn't a coward yet, and if nothing else, is a very gifted heavyweight offensively - in his next fight. The Tyson of Tokyo was not a million miles better than Ibeabuchi. He was a guy who still had explosive power and fast hands, but no longer threw them in combination & fought lazy. His head movement - one of his best attributes - was gone, as well.
I just lost a huge reply to you, so sincere apologies, but we must sternly disagree. I do not rate Tua, Byrd, or Ibeabuchi. Not at all. Vitali, too, comes in for more criticism than praise. Losing every round to him does nought for Byrd's case.
But do you deny Wlad's offensive abilities? He has an amazing punch arsenal, and back then he threw them all with deadly intentions. Tokyo Tyson could easily lose to Vitali, btw.
How does anyone not rate Vitalit when he's barely lost a round in years and and gave Lewis such a tough fight? Wlad for example would not have stayed on his feet that night.
Bullseye. His competition isnt simply poor - these guys make the Holmes era look like the 60's and 70's HWs...they are THAT atrocious. Vitali has done all (or thereabouts) that could be expected of him to be fair, but at a certain point you are accountable historically for your class of foe, and it simply does not get any worse than these guys.
This thread has nothing to do with Dempsey. Im 5'8, 190lbs and quite frankly, Vitali's competition isnt a million times better than ME.
He was being discussed (I didnt bring him up), as hes a fighter with a degree of relevance to the topic. Bringing Dempsey up is just baiting.
