And I just pointed out how your speed argument is false. Sorry dude.

Oh now it was his ability to earn respect by hitting them on the way in. He can't do that as well you say? You know what? You're absolutely right. And you know something else? He'll be the first person to tell you that. In fact, his exact words were, "You're gonna see me sitting down on my punches a lot more early on to get their respect." Adjustments, adjustments, my friend.

Anything else? Because I fail to see what argument you are trying to make here. First it's speed, now his defense was based on his offense. Next you'll tell me how his offense was so special because of his ring walk.

You didn't point out anything regarding Roy Jones, you carefully selected a fighter with speed not named Roy Jones.

But thanks for the generic insight into Zab Judah.

There's no doubt about it that Roy's defense was PURELY speed and reactions, and that's it.

As mighty impressive as it was, he's lost those attributes now and he is pretty hittable.

Who looked more hittable vs Tito, Winky or Roy?

    Generic? Try this:

But thank YOU for that wonderful insight on defense

To think...the reason why Jones was unhittable all these years was because he was fast. It just comes with being fast!!! I had no idea!!

Roy's Defense Wasn't JUST Predicated on Speed...

Reflexes Played a Role, but BLOCKING Shots Played an even BIGGER Role...Roy's ALWAYS Given his Body Away to BLOCK the Head Shots...That HASN'T Changed...That's THE ONLY Punches Tito EVER Landed Really...

The Tarver KO is a Direct Result of Roy's Glove Being an Inch or So N the WRONG Position...Give or Take an Inch EITHER WAY & Tarver DOESN'T Land that Fateful Left on Roy's Grill...Roy Relied on his BLOCKING of Shots to the Detriment of his Career...

REED was Say Roy's OFFENSE was Predicated on Speed MUCH Moreso than his Defense...

    Speed and reaction.

You can call it reflexes as well.

It was based on his natural ability.

Fair point about the body shots, that was all tito really landed clean. I certainly didn't see many eye catching head shots.

However, in his prime he would fight with his hands by his waist half the time, unless he was against the ropes, when yes he would block his face and give up the body.

His defense was ALMOST entirely speed and reactions I would say, this is prime Jones, before the first Tarver fight.

Right now his defense is OK, he is not mega hittable, but certainly more hittable than Winky, and Bernard too I'd say.

    Gotta DISagree there, Mex...

Roy was Using that Gloves High, Winky Wright Type of Defense Loooooooong B 4 the Wink Did...Roy was just More OFFENSIVE Minded than Wink...

YES, Speed Played a Role N Roy's Defense, as did Reflexes...But to Say Roy's Defense was Based "PURELY" On Speed is INCORRECT...

Roy's Been Using his Arms to BLOCK Punches from Day One...The Tarver KO Occured Cause Roy TRUSTED his Right Arm to BLOCK Tarver's Left as he Fired a Hook of his Own...Roy's Hook Actually LANDED Prior to Tarver's, but it hit Tarver N the NEck...

Roy DROPPED Montell Griffin N their 2nd Fight N a Very Similar Scenario...His Right Glove BLOCKED Griffin's Hook & Roy LANDED a Hook of his Own Simultaneously...

Well, Roy's "Natural Ability" to BLOCK Punches w/his Arms is STILL There...& that's a Facet of his Defense that's ALWAYS Been there...

OK I changed my mind on purely, but certainly mostly, which is why he was able to fight with his hands by his waist half the time, and still not get flush.

Having naturally ability doesn't equate to being unhittable. Or else EVERYONE who had natural ability would be as unhittable as Jones was. Or at least close to it - relatively close, depending on your degree of natural ability.

But that's not the case. AT ALL.

So really, maybe you should think over your theory on Jones' defense. You are very, very wrong.

Was his reflexes a big part of it? Sure. But, as any boxer will tell you, timing is more important than speed. And it was Jones' ability to anticipate that made him so special. Even the KO loss to Tarver, he made one of his trademark moves; threw a straight right and immediately backed away with his right hand guarding his jaw. He KNEW Tarver was gonna throw the punch before Tarver even threw it! But he was a bit off and Tarver got through.

Defense, my friend, is about much more than just reflexes. It requires SO much intelligence to be good at it. And that's what you're overlooking.

Of course it does, and Floyd's defense is partly great reactions, but more skill, intelligence, anticipation than Roy's.

For a middleweight and light heavyweight, Roy was extremely, extremely fast, his reactions, speed, timing etc was insane.

It was certainly more talent than it was schooling and skill.

And you can't really say "Every fighter with natural talent would have great defense" because partly, they might simply not exploit their talents to defense, and also no middleweight and above has ever been as fast as Jones, with as good reactions. He stands alone in the speed and reactions stakes.

I never said speed was his only defensive trait. I said his defense was predicated on it...his defense was based on his ability to see, react, because he has the speed/quickness to do so.

You can't take Roy's defense and impliment on a fighter without his physical gifts.

You could with Wright. You could with Hopkins...at least to a greater degree than Jones.

Ahh...the old backwards ice skating. Gotta love it.

So his defense was "predicated" on that. Cool. I've also pointed out what else his defense included. Care to explain that? Cuz that doesn't go away with age lol.

And he's made the adjustments. End of story.

I used "predicated" to begin with.

The line was "His defense was predicated on his speed, so yeah, it's a big deal when he slows down."

How did I go backwards from that?

Really? I can think of several fighters over the past 30 years who were as fast as Roy.

But really, it doesn't matter. He's still very fast. And since he was insanely fast, it stands that him losing some still makes him faster than most. And he is. What he has done, however, is admitted that he's slowed some, can't do certain things, and taken the necessary steps to adjust his game.

You kill me. How did you go backwards? Well we can start with how, when I pointed out how generic your argument was, you switched to the "his defense was good because his offense was" or whatever asinine argument you were making.

But anyway, who cares. I don't believe Winky was or is better than Roy defensively. You believe yes. Cool.

More importantly, and what I've been saying throughout this thread is that Roy Jones will beat Joe Calzaghe. End of story.

He hasn't shown if he's made the necessary steps to beat an elite fighter, that's the whole point.

He hasn't fought an elite fighter since Tarver.

It NEVER Ceases to Amaze REED how Roy's "Talent" or "Athleticism" is Used AGAINST him N Boxing Debates...

"He was ONLY Good Cause of his SPEED"..."He was ONLY Good Cause of NATURAL TALENT"...Now, it's "His Defense was Good BECAUSE Of his Speed"....

As if Roy NEVER Worked a Day N his Life to HONE his Talent, or STUDY the Finer Points of Defense or Anything Else...As if he was BORN Anticipating Left Hooks & Blocking them...SURELY, the Doctor Took a NEWBORN Roy from his Mother's Twat, Tried to Hit Roy w/a Left Hook & that NEWBORN Roy Blocked it w/his Right Arm...

Makes no difference. Tito spanked him and got robbed at the end. A few more tune-up fights and Tito will KO Roy. Guaranteed! :slap:

The BEAUTY of Roy vs Calzaghe is that by WINNING, Roy will FORCE his Critics to ACKNOWLEDGE that he was MORE than just an Athlete...

Most of Us ALREADY Knew that, but Some STILL Cling to the Theory that Roy was Good BECAUSE of his Talent &/or Athletic Ability...As if his BOXING ACUMEN or Ability to STRATEGIZE was Nonexistent...

The FUNNY Thing is, if U've EVER Heard Roy COMMENTATE a Fight, it should B OBVIOUS that he was MUCH More than just an "Athlete"...

But Whatever...Roy IS Diminished Athletically, so if he BEATS Calzaghe it WON'T B cause of his "Talent"...It'll B Cause of RINGSMARTS...

    NO NO NO

If you're saying Roy will win, then you are saying Roy should be favored.

    Which is ridiculous

No. I'm saying Roy will spring the upset. WTF are you talking about?

    Why should he be favored?

When did I make that argument?

What does one have to do with the other?

Why am I even responding to this :shit: ??

If you think he's going to win, then he's favored in your mind.

If the most likely outcome is Roy losing, then your 6 pages of crap wouldn't be explaining why Roy will win.

These two items are mutually INclusive. You can not say Roy is gonna win, and then say Calzaghe is favored, that is a self-owning backtrack.

    :bears:

I've heard it all this thread. A lot of backtracking and slamming Roy for really ridiculous sh*t.

I've heard he's targeting Calzaghe cuz he's ducking Johnson & Tarver. :dunno:

I heard he fought Hanshaw and Badi Ajamu because he wanted to remain relevant

And that he fought those two because he was too shook to fight the big boys :eeeek:

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

    Short-sighted much?

I don't make odds. Calzaghe will be favored and rightfully so. However, yes, I believe Jones will win. No, I don't believe he should be favored in Vegas. Hell, I don't want him to be favored.

    Are we finished here? Good.
