OK and do you also agree that handspeed is one of the last things to go, when a fighter starts to deteriorate?

He's done at the elite level. If he fights anyone worth a damn at their normal fighting weight he'll get worked.

Jones certainly doesn't like to get hit, he goes into his shell to avoid it, but I certainly don't think he respects Calzaghe's power going into this fight nearly as much as he did Tarver's.

That's why I think he's smart enough not to want to mess with fighters like Tarver or Johnson right now, except verbally.

Kenneth is getting angry, I can sense it. He's starting to twitch and judder as I type this. He's probably plucked off a couple of keys from his keyboard and eaten them already.

No. And if you think I'm gonna debate that then you don't know me very well.

Bottom line, his handspeed is STILL arguably the best in the division. That's all.

Give me some examples of fighters who were on their way to being shot, where their handspeed was one of the first things to go?

And yes, his handspeed is still probably the best in the division, that's because handspeed is one of the last things to go.

The big question with Roy is whether or not he has gotten over the clear case of post-concussion syndrome that he had. After the Tarver rematch, the guy simply couldn't take a punch anymore. It was borderline scary.

I only remember him retreating after getting tagged and hurt by Roy, I don't remember him backpeddling and trying to outbox Roy as part of a gameplan so to speak. I don't remember it being consistent, I remember him coming forward most of the time, as per usual.

Yup. Particularly after he got tagged but even in the early rounds he refused to fight on the inside, even as Jones beckoned him in against the ropes.

Even RJJ knows he's done. That's why his last 3 opponents have been two no names and an overweight/shot Tito Trinidad.

OK so why are you not going to debate that?

I'm genuinely interested, as I disagree with your claim that handspeed is the first thing to go.

Then disagree. I'm not gonna debate because we get so easily sidetracked. Yesterday it was Winky, now it's when handspeed goes on an aging fighter.

I believe Jones has enough to beat Joe C. You don't. We can debate why and discuss strategy, etc. but I'm not gonna debate when the fukk a fighter loses his handspeed.

Why not? Consider it a completely seperate debate, unrelated to Jones or Calzaghe.

What do you base your belief on that handspeed is the first thing to go when a fighter starts to become "shot".

Just give me some examples, that's all.

    So, hang on a moment.
You're saying that Calzaghe, a quicker, heavier-handed, better-chinned fighter at 175lb will do worse than Trinidad?

I must be ignorant cos you've lost me.

I think my point flew over your head. What I was saying was, it's pretty dumb to say he can't beat Calzaghe because he didn't KO Trinidad. And that's one argument I hear a lot: "he couldn't even stop a welterweight Tito, how is he going to beat such and such..."

He knocked Tito down twice and pretty much had his way with him. In his prime he couldn't put Otis Grant away either--that was a mercy stoppage not unlike the beating he gave Tito. And a lot of those so called "bums" he fought went 12 too.

In fact, not much has really changed for Roy lol. He's still "beating up on "bums," "makes too many mistakes in the ring," and "is gonna get KTFO as soon as someone cracks his jaw." Isn't this what's always been said of him?

Also, I don't understand what you mean by Calzaghe doing "worse" than Tito. Almost all of Jones' conquests looked the same; he pretty much beat everyone the same way and made them look bad in the same manner--didn't matter if they were good, great or mediocre. So I think we should clarify what looking "worse" means.

Do I think it will be easier? No. None of the other opponents were easy either, it just looked that way. Calzaghe will be much tougher though. He is one of a hell of a fighter, a great champion at 168 who, unfortunately, missed quite a few exams at the top. However, he gets high marks for consistency - his star rose while the greats of his time fell.

But I give Jones a greater chance to stop Calzaghe than Tito simply because Joe won't stop coming. Doesn't mean I think it'll be any easier. I just think Calzaghe will force the action on the "shot" fighter and leave plenty of opportunities to be countered, unlike Tito who threw even his body shots like a robber who was scared to stick around too long and get caught. Once he took a couple counters, he turned into Sven Ottke.

More than likely though, Calzaghe-Jones goes 12. And I think the judging will be a little weird, just like in Toney-Jirov--depending on what you like. I also think the fight itself, will look a lot like Toney-Jirov as well. Simple.

Thats why it was a great idea for him to fight smaller guys with less power, because he still has a speed advantage over the smaller guys.
