I would not count Pavlik out in a fight with Calzaghe. Don't judge his chances based on the Kessler fight. Remember that Pavlik does not go backwards. Kessler allowed Joe to set the pace and force the action. Pavlik will not just allow Joe to lead and get off first. That is Pavliks game, he will go to war with Joe in order to force his pace, he will not back up like Kessler did. It's a completely different fight.
I thought before Cal-Kess that both would beat Pavlik and pretty much anyone else from 60-68; my opinion hasn't changed much. Pavlik though is bigger than both of them. Having been at both Pavlik-Taylor and Cal-Kess, the size advantge he has is ridculous at any weight below 68. That said, Calzaghe is much quicker and I was very impressed with the way he adapted throughout the fight with Kessler. The old master done good.
The one thing Pavlik has which works to his advantage might be a disadvantage for him. His power is on the end of his punches and with the way Calzaghe slips and slides under shots, Pavlik could be in a situation like Kessler who missed a ton of shots over the top. if Pavlik's jab doesn't find Joe like it found Taylor, Pavlik will have a difficult time finding the correct distance so dialing in Joe will be difficult for him. "However" At 168, Pavlik would be the far bigger puncher (I think the 160 strain takes something from him) and if he caught Joe with right hands and uppercuts like Kessler did, I don't know if Joe handles those.
Going by some of the stuff I read I think Pavlik is still underestimated by a lot of people. Calzaghe has been around forever so he's not overlooked anymore but until he won his last 2 big fights he was.
Agreed. Also - Pavlik can dig underneath very, very well....and shorten up his shots when he has to at mid-/short-distance. No doubt long-distance suits him best, but he can make it a fight inside and he is very strong....not to mention, Calzaghe's power inside isn't at it's best either, ironically enough....that's where he tends to slap more. But no doubt - Pav WILL miss shots over the top and will have to adjust for it. I really, REALLY like Pavlik's uppercut against Calz. Peace.
Calzaghe v Pavlik? No. People have complained for years that Calzaghe has ducked challengers or whatever...and now you're crying out for him to fight a middleweight? Come on. Pavlik is no super star. He's just the last guy to beat Jermain Taylor. Until Kelly himself proves he's the real deal..I really think this fight is a massive step back for Joe. Calzaghe should look to 175.
I'd love to see Calzaghe look to 175 lbs. I think most are just commenting on what they think might happen if that fight were to come about. Peace.
Pavlik aint no damn middleweight! If they were in the ring together I'd guarantee you Kelly would look bigger than Joe. And Pavlik sure as hell proved against Taylor that he IS the real deal! That doesnt mean he'd beat Joe, but I MUCH rather see Calzaghe-Pavlik rather than seeing Calzaghe-Hopkins. However, the likelyhood of these two ever fighting is slim considering Joe is proving up to 175. The fight I'd REALLY like to see is Calzaghe-Dawson, but the chances of that fight happening are also slim. Joe will look for the money and fight the old grappler instead.
I don't. The real champ at 168 against the real champ at 160. The fight has intrigue for sure. Entertainment wise it's better than the fights that Calzaghe will be in at 175 as well. Oh and Pavlik is the first guy to beat Taylor decisively, that counts for a lot in my eyes. :bears:
Tam don't be a goon, Pavlik is a legitimate force. He's 6'3 and can punch like a fucking bastard. There is no doubt in mind that Pavlik would be a tougher fight for Joe than Hopkins. There is also no doubt for me that Pavlik is a better fighter than Kessler, and this shall be proved in coming years. Remember that.
