tyson has natural allure - there's something very human, compelling, and real about him, and there always was. floyd is just a flat boring person. if he worked in an office nobody would talk to him, because he was so boring and unimaginative.
you're really claiming his PR work is successful? he's the undefeated undisputed multiple-weight p4p#1, yet he's still barely known. compare to the momentum that oscar or tito quickly generated in their career, even though their success didn't match up to floyd's. he was a registered asshole before the gatti fight. the slave wages, the woman-beating, the insipid interviews - this guy was known as a personality-vacuum from day one. a transparently contrived gimmick that everyone ignores doesn't make a difference. floyd "vacuous" mayweather is a better moniker.
to be honest though, it's tough being a likeable person when you're the best in the world at something. when you're on top you're constantly paranoid about making the best of it, about losing it, about people not giving you what you deserve. roy was an asshole too.
Exactly, he's the worst smacktalker I have ever heard....and that's because of the reasons you mentioned. Nothing worse than someone BEGGING for attention and can't get it honestly. Floyd would be the guy in the picket line with the most embarrassing sign imaginable. His would stand out because of the bright colors, forcing you to read....then make you blush realizing he spent all that time making it when it had nothing to really say.
African Americans don't have a built-in fan base if they are successful like Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans. And still, how many sales did Floyd vs an old Oscar do compared to prime tito vs prime dlh? Floyd is a lot more than 'barely known.' That's just wishful thinking on your part. Wrong about day one part, too. Floyd was one of the american olympians who got 'robbed' like every other friggin american who lost in the olys back then and he wasn't disliked at all. Then he did the Genaro/Manfredy 1-2 punch and was foy and had it going his way. After that, things fell apart for him on the likeability meter, but that wasn't day one.
Oscar made Floyd a little known, 24/7 and the market saturating the airways with "who you got" along with dancing with the stars, barely made him known. Floyd is :shit: given all the promotion he got. Really he is a failure when you factor all the things he had going for him in cross-over appeal and the free marketing he received...
He's spoiled, obnoxious, and he has no charisma, but he's completely harmless. Like Donny mentioned, there are a lot worse characters in boxing.
The dude is a real live asshole at his basest levels. Look at the family, it's in the genes. The guy can't even make peace with his own father, he beats women, and plays to the crowd at others expense. Even still, when it comes to him in the ring, I can't help but root for genius.
Look, I understand all who hate him, I do. But time has proven that whatever he has done to make you all mad, has worked. He's earning a shit load of money, getting the big fights and having you all open another thread about him. As a boxer what can you say, he's a genius. I don't like him or hate him, to me he's playing a character. An asshole at that but a character none the less.
He's not a genius  If he was he would be a house-hold name. He's not even an asshole, he's just a limited cunt with no imagination or character :nono:
If you actually spent time with him, he'd have you picking up dollar bills like a stripper before ya know it....
:nono: Uh! uh! uh!, I hope you don't mean 'defensive' genius,..he has meticulously developed his skills since he was old enough to slip on the mittens, but one can only judge his offense, which is good, but his defence is undeniably riddled with fouls, it's disgusting.
Hops, RJJ and Shane were all considered p4p the best but never become a mainstream star like Floyd is now. Floyd is a very hard worker and has done a very good job promoting himself.
Floyd Mayweather Jr: Bonafide superstar. And it didn't happen until he took on this persona. His HBO interview several weeks before the Gatti fight revealed a lot. He was absolutely fuming over the media portrayal of him as some sort of bad guy and Gatti as good. From that point on, he embraced the role. Look what it's brought him. Is he arrogant and an occasional jerk? Sure. A lot of fighters are and none are as good as he is. But now he's playing that role to the T, just so he can procure the kind of responses we see on this thread. I'd say it's working.
ha ha, "it's working" naseem hamed's schtick worked ali's schtick worked prime tyson's invincible monster schtick worked but floyd... people don't even believe his act. he's not a villain - he's an embarrassing nitwit. is he trying to create that image? "i'm gonna play an inarticulate, cognitively-challenged loser, who tries to play a blingin' gangsta but fails" and getting diehard boxing fans to open a thread on a messageboard saying what a flaccid penis you are is not a measure of success. he's the p4p #1.
He's been p4p #1 for quite some time - and the most underappreciated for even longer. What exactly did that bring him? Speaking of Hamed, Floyd got a smaller and far more binding contract offer from HBO for battering Diego Corrales - a dangerous opponent ranked higher than him p4p - than Naseem did for shaking his ass in England. The "slave" contract? How did that "Black De La Hoya" work out for him? For some reason, all his bad acts were made public while other top fighters had their equally disturbing wrongdoings ignored by the media. So yes, it's an act. Sure he's a prick. Most good fighters are. But is he a inarticulate, cognitively-challenged loser, who tries to play a blingin' gangsta? Get real. It's that kind of reaction that forces you to tune in, hoping he gets crushed. That's what I meant by message board reaction - in case that went over your head. Finally, Floyd is set to make an amount few boxers can dream of for taking part in a FIXED fight. So whether or not you "believe his act" has little relevance. It's the fact that you BUY it.

:nono: Uh,.. the phrase "Y'all tune in and pay to see him lose" is a flimsey justifyance for him being his ordinary cockhead self, especially in this day and age of ''free downloading'' :crafty: , from a boxing fans perspective, there's nothing positive to come out of the mouth of a transparent sociopath arsehole who admits blatantly he doesn't give a fuck what the consensus wants, and we'll get what we're given in useless Hatton and De La Hoya rematches. But you know, Fraud psychophants have always loved and supported a dictatorship . His crossover appeal wont work, he will inevitably fail miserably and blow up like a kettle, he's a mentally unstable man-child with narcissm, he cant twist every field he participates in to suit himself, the way his groupies allow him to manipulate common descency and the democratic ethics of boxing.
What are you talking about? His crossover appeal won't work? He made $50 million last year and is about to pull another eight figure amount for acting. At what point is it working in your eyes, when he's making a bil? Please. You wanna argue about his quality of competition, that's one thing. But as far as his "transparent socopath arsehole" act...oh yeah, I'd say there's a direct relationship between that and the money he throws at your TV screen. What a lot of the Floyd detractors don't realize is that their over the top reactions to Floyd's over the top reactions makes them as much a nuthugger as the ones they wish to bash.
Pardon me,.. I meant his appeal won't work in the long term, he's having a trial run at the moment, and he's failing dysmally, he's going to have to refrain from throwing cash at people in return for waves of scrambling attention if he doesn't want to have to return to boxing, you don't really believe he's throwing money at people just to be nice do you, you think it feels good for him just to 'be nice'? ...nup, he's always looking to harvest something for himself, in public. When he's got no cash left to feed his ego, and all his crew have abandoned his arse stone cold, this is when we'll all see the real Fraud blow up into the unstable little monster that he is, the 'Michigan mutilater', women beware :stir: .
Have you seen the numbers? Has anyone denied his 20 million dollar claim? The one he spouts with Vince McMahon sitting right next to him? He's getting paid top dollar, like it or not. But whether he makes $5 mil or $10 mil, that's a hell of a lot of money for someone who will never crossover...who just so happens to be making that amount in a vocation other than his own ::
