Word. For the first 8 rounds GGG generally looked more uncomfortable in there. From my vantage point he was the recipient of greater punishment. That is why it was particularly noteworthy when he cane on strong at the finish and started to nail Canelo in the 9th through 11th. That showed character.

I don't believe at all that GGG was in "retreat". He was however somewhat stymied by Alvarez standing his ground and moving forward and tried other things because Canelo was able to take his shots. The one thing that annoyed me with Golovkin was his use of the left hook. Rather than just throwing orthodox hooks he regularly went for that sort of over and down shot that knocked out Rubio.

The way Canelo fought was somewhat intimidating, even for a guy like GGG. Canelo was a “rock fighter”...he just came forward and was like an impenetrable rock that you couldn’t hurt and that was continually looking to punish any aggression coming his way. This is the way Canelo should fight every fight going forward and stop this annoying moving around the ring shit. He obviously has the chin to do this and so he should.

    that's nonsense

A fight should be judged on his own, not depending on what a boxer did before. If GGG decided to box like ali in a fight, he shouldn't be penalised cause he never did it before. He should only be judged on the succes he has on that particuliar night

I don't think "intimidating" is the correct word but it's always going to trouble a puncher if you're used to blasting guys out and they're absorbing your shots. GGG did throw a few big bombs wide of the target. He wasn't loading up constantly however which so many knockout artists do when power alone isn't working.

I give credit to Alvarez for being able to maintain it even though I thought GGG won narrowly. It's one thing to say "he doesn't like fighting backward, go pressure him!". It's quite another to get away with it. It's not like trying getting inside a guy like Mayorga where shortening the distance actually puts you in less danger.

And I don't know about the rest of you but the first round is weighted the same as the 12th on my scorecards... this whole "impression on the judges" stuff is crap unless you want to show me where GGG got an "11-9" round because he was finishing strong

Vitali normally liked to take the center of the ring and pot shot guys into submission.

But I saw him out of breath and backpedalling versus Arreola as Arreola came forward.

Vitali didn't want to stand and trade.

    Arreola was winning that shit!!!

I agree but we all know these things aren't looked at in vacuum. Even a very good unbiased judge will tend to expect certain things from fighters who already have a reputation. Not saying it's correct, but probably unavoidable.

The way Arreola was swallowing left hands and then swinging and missing- effective aggression!

There's too much of this..........."He normally has guys beaten by now, he must be losing" shit going around.

It was the same in that Abraham vs Paul Smith fight.

Because Smith wasn't dead after 4 rounds, the British commentary team insisted he was winning.

THen when he went the distance, and dropped a decision, in Germany, they were convinced he had won widely and been robbed.

    It's baloney.

I agree that you cannot look at things in a vacuum.

But by that same token you can't blow air into the room and tell everyone it just got windy.

Another good example would be when Froch fought Dirrell. Because Froch wasn't blowing Dirrell away like people thought he might, and Dirrell was making good on his claim that he would make Froch miss, the Brits had Froch way behind.

In the cold light of day, it was apparent that as the fight drew on, Froch was fighting more and more and Dirrell less and less, and Dirrell let the fight get away from him as Froch made it a war and Dirrell wanted it a bit less.

The Brits had Froch losing and the Yanks had Dirrell losing. For the Americans, an American fighter usually KO's the Brit and doesn't get out gutted by him, so Froch must have been winning.

It's daft, people allow themselves to be swayed by how THEY feel the fight should go down.

MAde the KO artist back up. Clearly ahead, and had forced Vitali into a change of styles.

Change Your Style = You are scurred and losing.

Kellerman's "Canelo winning the story of the fight" was incredibly irritating. They were basically admitting they do narratives. I'm sure they justify it with some nonsense of people want more than play by play.

It's ironic, because Kellerman always maintained that the rule for separating guys in close fights is to determine which of them is least comfortable.

GGG always looked perfectly at home in there. There was not one ounce of desperation about the guy.

It makes the case for Golovkin..........he was not doing his thing and still looked very competent.

Kellerman is a shill and Alvarez is the home fighter, he's vital to their Post-Mayweather interests and outside of Lomachenko, whose talent cannot be denied, Kellerman isn't a fan of the Soviet Union fighters.

I got physically sick when Screaming A Smith called Limpley the best blow-by-blow commentator of all time.

I could hear Don Dunphy rolling in his grave.

We saw it before too with Pac vs Timmy the Head.............Pac would throw nothing shots and Lampley would be like "Bam! Bam! Bam! Blau! Blau!! Kazaam" like a shitty Batman episode from the 60's

I think it's shitty criteria if you're using it to judge a winner, but I can see why a commentator would at least mention it.

In regards to "comfortability" I think there was some back and forth but nothing which should have swayed anybody. To my eye neither appeared particularly concerned. Both were just going about their business as prize fighters do.

I'm glad I didn't hear any of that. It's precisely why I stopped listening to the HBO team years ago. If it's on cable I switch to the Latin feed. If it's a stream if it's the HBO stream I turn off the sound.

I forget which round it was but GGG threw a series of maybe 8 or 9 punches...not a single one of them landed. Canelo slipped all of the shots, GGG was a little winded then Canelo threw his own flurry of shots, maybe half of them landed and were body shots.

With no sound I can guarantee Lampley damn near busted a blood vessel.

The coonery of Smith goes to new levels everytime I see him.

Did you see the clown show with he and Atlas post fight? It was embarassing to both. Atlas is ready for an old folks home.

Haha I have no idea what round you're describing but it could have been any of them. Lampley's commentary from what I recall wasn't actually as bad as Kellerman's though.

I always get my fights on streams and it's rare that I come across an HBO feed. Usually it's an English one which typically isn't so great either when it comes to being impartial. That's not just when British fighters are involved either.

Lampley just comes across as the most arrogant, pretentious prick alive. Maybe even more arrogant than Cosell.

Barry Tompkins was not only better, but Tompkins seems like a guy you could actually sit down and have a normal conversation with.

Lampley doesn't even talk like a human anymore.

True. There is an elitism about him and HBO in general. Production wise HBO do a great job of covering fights generally speaking but the commentary team sometimes comes across as if they're covering Zeus vs Apollo and they were hand selected to do so.

I dont even care much for Roy as a commentator anymore. Once the voice of reason, Roy is now a huge company shill.

    Paulie has definitely surpassed Roy.

Why should making him fight different be rewarded on the cards? That's not a scoring criteria. That some shit the announcers put in your head.

And doubling over is a common defense against a body attack.

    Brother Whiskey,

You OPENLY Subscribed to the Theory of Triple G “Allowing” Opponents Like Brook to Hit Him Because He Felt Their Power was Shit, Yet You’re Now Conveniently Reluctant to Acknowlesge He Was RETREATING vs Canelo, When He Spent the Vast Majority of the Time Doing JUST That?

No One’s Saying He Fought Like a Bitch or Anything But CLEARLY, Triple G Didn’t Fancy His Chances Standing Center Ring w/Canelo for Looooong Stretches, Last Saturday Night.

golovkin is longer than alvarez so he was circling trying to keep the fight at mid range. alvarez is more compact and quicker so he was getting the better of the action on the inside (until the last few rounds when he was gassed). not quite as the same as what alvarez did in the first fight he was attempting to survive and shorten the fight with his movement so that he could fight in spurts.

Fuck This Pie in the Sky Bullshit About How Boxing Matches “Should” Be Judged Bruh.

Judges “Shouldn’t” Be Swayed By Blood, Bruises, Hematoma’s or Other Facial Damage, But Tbey Are.

Judges Aren’t Supposed to Allow the Degree of Sweat Flying Off a Fighter’s Head to Influence Who’s Landing the “Cleaner, Harder Shots” Either, But Tbey Do.

When a High Profile Fighter Reaches 30-40 Bouts, There’s Tendencies, Patterns and Habits Formed in the Minds of ALL Parties Involved. A STYLE , If You Will. No, it “Shouldn’t” Matter GGG was Considered a “Killer Ducked By Everyone and Their Father”...No, the Fact He KO’ed 23 Straight at One Point “Shouldn’t” Matter and the FACT Triple G Has Been SOLD to American Audiences Under the Premise of Mexican Style “Shouldn’t” Matter Either.

But If You Think All of Those Factors Aren’t, Haven’t and Wont CONTINUE to Come Into Play in High Profile Matches, You’re Lying to Yourself.

When a Fighter’s Had a Certain Amount of Fights He Becomes a “Victim” of His Own Successes, Especially Fighters Who’ve Thrived via Aggressive, Alpha Male Tactics.

We All Know How GGG Wants to Fight, We All Know How Abel Wants Him to Fight. Are You HONESTLY Telling REED You Weren’t Surprised at His Inability to Force Canelo On His Backfoot? He’d Just Done That to Canelo in their Previous Meeting and Did Likewise w/the Vast Majority of His Opponents.

Fuck What “Should” Be, You Know as Well as REED How Boxing Matches ARE Judged.

Announcers Don’t Put Shit In REED’s Head, Bruh.

When You’ve Watched the Majority of a Dude’s Bouts, HABITS Stand Out, as Does Facial Expressions and Body Language.

Doubling Over Is Only Common When a Fighter’s Been BOTHERED By Preceding Bodyshots. In His Prime, Roy Jones Never Soooooo Much as ACKNOWLEDGED Incoming Bodyshots, Nevermind Doubling Over to Guard Against Them.

    Ali-Chuvalo is Another Example.

Fighters Typically Do NOT Double Over to Defend Bodyshots Until One Has Hurt/Bothered Them 1st.
