Alvarez has ran out of whites to fight. At 168, at least

For some reason I like Alvarez but I don’t particularly enjoy watching him fight. I actually caught the first couple rounds of this and decided to watch NBA instead. I did turn back when it was over and caught a couple replays of the stoppage which I didn’t expect because going off the two rds I watched I thought for sure this was going the distance.

Tank is literally at the only other division with another undisputed champion

While Plant was competitive, it didn’t exactly have the feel of a difficult fight for Canelo. He never seemed ‘at risk’ in any way.

Tank is 27 years old and has done nothing of consequence in the sport.

Canelo at 22 had a deeper resume.

No but he had a hard time landing clean punches in many rounds while Plant was moving, potshotting and dodging. It had the feel of a controversial decision until the stoppage. Closer than expected, which is often enough in boxing to declare a fight controversial.

Canelo must be the GREATEST boxer that ever generated so little excitement. I think people are suspicious of him. There was a time fights like this would do 30, 40 pages here just in the buildup. People aren't buying it anymore. Not quite.

Plant didn't do near enough to make this a close fight. Was it competitive? Meh, a little.

Eastside is still very much alive, and the Canelo-Plant thread there is 74 pages deep. However, the general forum there consists of 85% idiots, so its a double-edged sword.

I fell asleep and caught the post-fight interview and saw the stoppage.

    So it went like this:

    Plant did better than expected.
Canelo stayed fresh long enough to get value from his Pharma
They kissed and made up afterwards.
    Canelo is the greatest.

Glad I slept on it in the end.

Pawing jab, feint, cover up, take a walk, pawing jab, duck, slip, paw jab, take a walk, jab, right hand, take a walk... Plant all night.

When you throw that many jabs and the guy is never knocked back or discouraged from walking you down, it is not effective. Plant fought well enough to not get knocked out until he got knocked out. If this were an amateur fight he would have been well ahead on the scorecards but this is prize fighting.

I'm laughing at guys talking about "Plant's jab." It didn't do shit. Plant's jabs were "stay off me please" jabs. He wasn't Larry Holmes last night.

Tweet from Josh Taylor sums up the fight:

"I don’t know what people were watching back home going by some of the tweets, but at ringside that was a methodical beat down from canelo. I gave plant 2-3 rounds tops, he was being pushed around the ring far too easily."

I knew he'd go through the motions.

The Cuban Lara showed how to deal with this little fatty phony.

Gene Fullmer would have fucked him up.

Tired of seeing it. Little enhanced fatty and his scurred dance partners.

Plant did better than Stiff and BJS, thats all. He acquitted himself well, in the words of Manny Steward, "just as I expected."

Having said that, at no point did i get the feeling he was winning. He was just holding his own, up until a point.

Do people think it is normal or abnormal that a genuine 160+ man should get pushed around so easily by a guy who once needed a long fight to get rid of an aged, and not very good to begin with, Carlos Baldomir?

At precisely what point do the people who command a serious media presence begin to say certain things?

Or do they assert themselves at all? Is it really all Pro Wrestling now?

Like I believed, he sort of played a role, he performed a task, without going, or really attempting to go, beyond.

    Regarding the Lara fight:

    1. Canelo has improved since 2014.

    2. Prime Lara was a totally different class than Plant.

    One more thing.

I don't want to hear a single word about Canelo needing to fight GGG. Fuck GGG. What has he done?

Canelo fought 1 more time in the past 12 months than GGG has in the three years since they last fought. Canelo's won 4 belts at 168 and 1 at 175 plus dealt with promotional issues while GGG went inactive at 160.

So fuck GGG. He needs Canelo not the other way around.

I wasn't aware there was any clamour.

    Besides, GGG has regressed.

    I don't agree with that.

It's like saying you have the same access to the internet as anyone else.

    Sure, up to a point.

    Then the $$$ takes over.

    Agreed with this.

I'm done with Borat. He's becoming more and more irrelevant in the sport.

Even when top level guys get caught, it's for things that existed for a long time. Yeah there might be some new drugs that are really effective and undectable, but unless we get some proof, its pretty much science fiction

A guy can only perform up to his ability, Irish.

Caleb isn't Andre Ward. He's not James Toney. He's not Joe Calzaghe. He's merely a "good" fighter.

He tried what he could. He was just in with a different class fighter.

Plant is not "good." He's merely ok at best. He had 1 ok win in his career and basically sat on the title until he fell ass backward into this position. Took him two years to have his 4th fight since winning the title.

Let's be honest. Calzaghe, Kessler, Ward and Froch would have beaten the brakes off Plant plus Canelo never would have looked at 168 if those guys were around. That's where this division is.

Won't bother mentioning if Roy, Bernard or Toney were at 168.

I agree- and it is easy for me to say- but why not just go wild and see what happens?

end result is likely to be no different.......

Canelo run over 160 is pretty hard to gauge. Sure he looks great, but the opposition is really weak. The best guy he beats in that stretch is probably a very washed up kovalev (not to mention that the fight is a bit fishy)
