    Cazares-Calderon presser!
    By Herminio Nieves
WBO mini flyweight champion Hugo Cazares (25-3-1, 19 KOs) and WBO straweight champion Ivan Calderon (28-0, 6 KOs) met for the final time before their long awaited clash this Saturday in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. The final press conference was held in San Juan in front of a huge crowd who gathered to see the final words from each corner. WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel stated that "this is the battle of the two best low weight fighters in the world," comparing the fight to the old time classic battle between Wilfredo Gomez and Salvador Sanchez. There is a very interesting contract agreement for this fight in which Cazares and Calderon, who is moving up from the 105 pound division, can not weight more than 118 pounds on Saturday. For many ringside experts this could hurt Cazares' chances, since he is clearly the bigger and stronger fighter.

    Smart Move!

I think it's bullshit to be honest. if Cazarez somehow makes weight who cares what he weighs on Saturday.

If by "contract agreement" they mean in the contract when it was originally signed, I don't see anything wrong with it being there.

Both parties know what they're getting in to.

Besides, 10 pounds over 108 on fight night is plenty.

I think they should there should be percentage limits (above the contracted weight for fights) for fighter's weights on the days of every fight.

I agree but it's a smart move because Calderon is moving up in weight and they want to make sure this guy dosent gain 15+ pounds for fightnight.

The fight is at 108, Cazarez is the champion not Calderon.

If Calderon was so worried about weight he should have stayed at 105.

The fight is at 108 pounds. The restriction is BS, I still hope Cazares smashes Calderon, so this "hype" will finally end. Calderon has beaten a bunch of has beens and nobodies, yet gets hyped by fools like Dan Rafael and others, who have the audacity to rank Calderon P4P.

If they want to limit what a guy weighs when he steps in the ring just go to the same day weigh ins. Otherwise I don't think it should matter.

I disagree. I think they should have to make weight the day before, but only be allowed to go a certain percentage over that in the time until the fight.

Regardless, if it was in the contract to begin with Cazares knew th deal.

and for anyone complaining about it - if Cazares doesnt like it, he should've had his people renegotiate the contract or simply not take the fight at all.

I don't care if it was in the contract or not, that don't make it right. If Calderon is that worried about size he should have stayed at 105. I have NEVER felt it was right when fighters try throwing BS in the contracts like this. kinda like ODLH making the MW Championship at 157 with Hopkins. It's BS.

i agree. i'm just saying, Cazares was clearly in a position to tell Calderon and his people to go fuck themselves, but instead signed the contract.

at the risk of sounding like stinger, I think it's absurd that he's 15% over the limit a week before the fight. as dominant as he is at jr fly, I don't see how he can last much longer at the weight,

and for all the hate on calderon, doesn't he get at least a little bit of credit for pursuing the best 108 lb. in his first trip up? Dude is the smallest top-level fighter in the world, taking on the worlds best and biggest jr. fly, and all he gets is shitted on.

that's different with oscar, though - he already won a title at 160, yet was demanding that the real champ weight less than the division limit.

A 10% post weigh-in cap is a fair request. The IBF institutes it. If guys can't do it, they shouldn't fight at the weight.

Is this fight for a IBF title? My point with the ODLH-Hopkins weight issue is simpple. it was in the contract so according to a lot of people that made it OK. Well I don't agree and I HATE stuff like this in contracts.

108 is the shittiest division in boxing. Solis is right up there with Cazares and the rest is garbage. Kyowa, Mayol, Niida, Takayama, Rachman, Soto, Sithsamerchai or Gonzalez (who according to boxrec is 20 years old, 14-0 with 14 KO´s, including a first and third round KO over two Calderon challengers) at 105 are real challenges.

Agreed! Calderon better be very careful. He better not think of trading with this guy. He will need to execute a masterful game plan.

Hope so. losing 10 pounds that quickly though is a bit fishy. I can dehydrate off 5-7 pretty easily but being his size 10 pounds that quickly is a ton.
