lets not pretend that many of these cage fight PPVs dont contain one, two or sometimes up to three dyke cage fights on the main card. the problem with boxing is these guys arent fighting enough. its not even the big money guys, its all of them. the young guys, the prospects, the champs. 1 fight a year or sometimes none
Yes, inactivity is a big factor killing the sport. 1-2 fights a year is a joke. At this point, it's like once a year. I'll give credit where it's due - young Oscar was defending the title every 2-3 months in the 90s. Tank/Charlos would have a stroke at the mere thought of that.
UFC has its own problems - beyond guys getting paid poorly.. They can't build megastars. They can't because MMA isn't conducive for guys staying at the top for long. It's really THE ONLY sport where stars have a super super short shelf life. NFL, NBA, MLB, FIFA, Boxing, Tennis, stars in these sports can stay on top for 8-10 years. Not UFC.

A Fighter Either HAS Ambition or He DOESN'T... Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar dela Hoya were THE Marquee Names of Their Day, Highest Earners of Their Era's, Yet They NEVER Lacked for Ambition, Even as Their Bank Accounts Ballooned... The "Keep 'em BROKE and HUNGRY" Logic AIN'T Absolute... REED
Agreed, I mean, there is always gonna be unambitious guys like Andrade and Russell, facing subpar opponents for easy, but relatively small, money. But what really needs to be stopped is making a big event (or star) out of a mismatch. Tank is the perfect example of it. He's basically the face of boxing in the US and he fought no one. Why would he be willing to take risks when he s already reached that point without taking any ??
True, but they were also gloryhog and I don't think they would have be able to maintain this mainstream presence facing stiffs continuously. Nowaday, it seems like it's possible unfortunately...
I believe this is it. I don't believe boxers are that different from any other sport or era, though. If basketball and football players got the same money they do now for posting on Instagram instead of playing their asses off, many of them would. The structure of the sport prevents that from happening, but boxing has no structure. Avoiding challenges isn't a new phenomenon either. Even Muhammad Ali was perfectly happy being celebrity first, fighter second late in his career facing Evangelistas and Coopmans. Had it been possible to make craploads of money without fighting, most of the stars of 60s and 70s would have done just that. They weren't necessarily more keen to prove themselves, they just didn't have the choice.
I agree completely. I think it's party due to the sheer toll the sport takes on the body; but more to do with the fact that Dana White isn't interested in producing and promoting mega stars. He's interested in promoting a brand, and he's done a brilliant job. Nowadays, the terms UFC and MMA are virtually synonymous. Let's say if McGregor told Dana White to go and fuck himself and did his own thing; where would end up? He'd try another sport/MMA federation and he'd do okay, then when he lost, it'd be all over because he lacks the ability to build himself back up. Dana's business model is absolutely not built for fighters, it's built for the brand. Great for him now, but I think it might become troublesome in the long run.
Dana basically copied that model from Vince McMahon. The two are very similar imo, personality wise. Huge narcissists. Guess Dana isn't bright enough to see that WWE started dying once they put the brand over the stars. UFC will one day go the way of WWE.
Exactly Claressa Shields couldnt sell a fried chicken dinner at the south Central swapmeet. So they just put her in the ring with a Limey lass in UK and sure enough the sweet caronline singing mongos will show up by the truckloads while they patiently wait for Eubanks vs Benn 3.
Did Don King promote Julian Jackson vs Gerald McClellan? That kind of fight rarely even happens today and that was an UNDERCARD fight. We can't even get Crawford vs Spence in a timely fashion and both don't have shit else going on.
Very true. I remember when Chavez was in the undercard for Tyson. Two superstars in one card would not fly today.
The UFC has 1300 employees. Their fight cards have to produce money to pay all these people. They cant be giving someone 50 million for a fight.
The UFC still puts on some of the best cards and 90% of the time their top fighters are fighting each other.
Not only that but even if the UFC goes bankrupt which it wont. The MMA sport is not going away. If and when that ever happened some bigger and better MMA organization would fill that void. I know bitter boxing fans wish that the UFC would fail and go away. But i'm one of the boxing fans that think there's enough money to go around to sustain both the UFC and Boxing events. Im a fan of both sports. One doesn't take away from the other. I like having different options to watch.
Are there still many bitter boxing fans that want MMA/ufc to go away??? I used to be one…not bitter just thought that UFC was gay asf two guys fry humpin each other…then started watching more and more of it and older fights to get a sense of history…came to the realization that Matt Hughes is one of my favorite mma fighters. A wrestler take/slam people into the mat and pound the fuk out of them or make them tap.. no doubt imo UFC has put on much better matchups than boxing in the last 5-10 yrs…however I’m no where near as emotionally involved as I was with boxing from the mid 90s to 2007-8.
Thats absolutely not true. You keep repeating that years after years, even though inalready showed you that a lotmof ufc fighters stayed elite for more than 5 years.
Yeah i was thinking wtf is he talking about. There has been plenty of UFC stars that stayed on top for over 5 years. Made multiple title defenses. GSP Silva Jon Jones Usman(until recently) Dj (mighty mouse) Tito Ortiz I think boxing fans associate undefeated records with being elite. But for MMA having a few loses on their records doesnt mean theyre bums or tomato cans like in boxing. Even guys like Cowboy Cerrone have been able to cross over into doing movies. Cowboy is well on his way to becoming a household name.
Men in Tights.....UFC is ridiculous, Joe Rogan pulling faces at ringside it's all too much. People who can't fight getting fortunes to get beaten senseless inside a round. Guys give another guy brain damage then lose a fight because their arm got stuck in the other guys anus when, on the street, they'd have walked away victorious 10 minutes earlier... Sitting in each others faces.
Anyways if i get in from work in time tonight I'll watch any fight that's on tv but I'll be taking it with a grain of salt.
You Say That as if PBC, Top Rank, Matchroom, etc. DON'T Put On as Many if Not MORE Shows Than UFC Does...
