Does Margarito have enough of a following to go to Vegas and will Cottos east coast fans go to Vegas for the fight. IMO it is a big mistake not to have this fight at MSG. They have done a great job recently in building up his fanbase there.

Probably the best matchup we'll see for the rest of the year. I'd much rather see this then Floyd\DLH 2.

Hopefully the fight goes off a few minutes after 11 EST, which will be right when the 2nd EliteXC Card on CBS will be ending.

I really think after re-watching both guys latest few fights that Cotto is going to look spectacular in this fight. I think he'll bust tony up badly and stop him mid-late

    this will FORCE Floyd-Cotto

Hopefully. I think that's why they are having the fight in Las Vegas also. The fight being in Vegas adds more pressure to PBF too and more $$$.

It's better for boxing if Cotto wins impressively.

You call the Santos bout 1. his biggest test and 2. a failure?

    Yup.

    Maybe...maybe not.

For your sake, I sure hope you're right.

There's no need to FORCE Floyd-Cotto. If Floyd wasn't scared of him at 140, why would he be scared now? Because he went life and death with Shane Mosley? :nono: I don't think so.

Like Roger Mayweather said re: a potential Cotto fight. "Floyd don't duck BIG MONEY." So assuming all goes well and Cotto comes out of 2008 looking like the man, this fight will happen. Book it.

As for Cotto looking spectacular...it's possible. But I think this fight is going to be a war. I wouldn't be surprised if both guys taste canvas cuz neither is coming to lose in the biggest fight of their careers.

Sure, but Marge failed in his biggest tests against Santos and Williams.

Cotto is a significantly bigger test than both of them.

    Cotto by humiliating domination.

One thing I can say about Marge is that is tough, my prediction is that he takes a career crippling beating.

I agree and I think that is what will happen anyway.. Margarito is a good fighter but he is slow and Cotto is going to eat him alive

I do not mean "force" as in Floyd is scared... that is ridiculous.. I mean that public demand will increase, money will increase and it is more likely to happen

Glove issues aside, I think the Vegas location is to try to get some bi-coastal appeal for Cotto. Trinidad packed in MSG, but could sell in Vegas as well.

Fights with Mayweather and DLH would sell out Vegas regardless, but it still helps if Cotto gets some box-office appeal in Vegas.

Tito didn't even sell out Vegas for the Vargas fight. Vargas is a much bigger draw then Margarito.

The thing with Arum is his main constituency is Mexican/Mexican American fans...and having Cotto-Margarito in NY doesn't do much to attract that fan base to the fight.

If he puts Cotto-Margarito in Las Vegas and puts some Mexican fighters (perhaps including JCC Jr.) maybe it draws a lot more of those fans to the card.

And as Arum points out, the West Coast media (and this includes much of the Spanish speaking media in So. Cal, etc.) doesn't travel to the East Coast like the East Coast writers (and this includes more newspaper writers) travel to the West Coast.

I think Arum really wants good pay per view numbers for this fight for Cotto's sake, and the actual numbers are going to be important.

Its Mexico vs Puerto Rico. The fight will sell anywhere.

Why didn't Vargas vs Tito sell out. That was a huge fight back in 2000.

It will sell, but I don't think he just wants it to sell...he wants it to do more than that.

Arum was reportedly expecting Cotto-Mosley to do half a million buys. After the fight he claimed it did over 400,000...but didn't release the numbers immediately after and the actual numbers I saw reported were closer to 360,000.

He's been trying to make this fight for over a year and the last two times Cotto and Margarito have fought it's been on the same card. He has a lot invested in this fight and wants major numbers out of this one.

    Since when is Vargas mexican?

    He's the Aztec Warrior.

    Doesn't that make him Mexican?

It damn sure was, and I'm shocked it wasnt sold out! Tito was way more popular in 2000 than Cotto is now, and Vargas will always be more popular than Phony.

Hopefully Cotto-Marga lives up to Tito-Vargas in quality.

Arum is trying to make Cotto as popular in Vegas as in NY, good move but I really thought the fight was gonna happen in NY :dunno:

It all depends on Margarito, there's no time to waste, he's usually a slow starter and in this fight if he starts slowly then it is as good as lost, he's got to apply non stop offense and throw as many punches as he can, forget blocking and counterpunching in this fight, just train to fucken throw as many as he can, go in like a kamikazee.

Cotto will beat him suprisingly easy.........

He's not outboxing Cotto, infact, he's not outboxing many elite fighters,.. he outworks or outbrawls them,..with Cotto there is no time to waste, the systematic breakdown must be applied from the first minute of the first round onwards, Margarito has to realise that he's going to get hit wether he applies his version of 'defence' or not, so he's just got to make sure that he's hitting Cotto back as much as possible for as long as possible. If not, then he gets thoroughly outpointed doesnt he...:notallthere: ?... he may aswell not show up, and spend that time losing an auction on DVD's instead.
