At the same time, though, they went from "innocent until proven guilty" to not speaking about it at all. Not to mention that they were fairly receptive to Margarito being given a chance to return. As a website who prides itself on being an industry leader, their (lack of) coverage was disgraceful, and perhaps the nail in the coffin as they're not even close to what they once were in terms of popularity or respect.
Really? I get a slightly different impression. While yes many fans were against his return, there doesn't seem to be as much of a negative reaction as there should, and he still seems to get cheered a bit etc. I haven't noticed him get boo'd much when the camera is on him or at press conferences etc.
I can see your point on Margarito and agree that he rode out the babe in the woods act as far as he could... although at least part of it was due to legal reasons. Chico left behind a trail of debt, burned bridges, and from all accounts was a fairly mean drunk. He truly loved his fans, but seemed like the type of fighter whose only salvation was found between the ropes. Not unlike LT during his heyday on the gridiron (or golf course, a/k/a his coke rehab)
Serious? Dude's name is mud. Plus, the fact that he's barely relevant these days takes a lot of the hatred out of the equation. Hasn't won a meaningful fight since Cotto '08.
Not to defend them (stop doing this Jake)...I believe they mostly said "he served his suspension" blah blah blah. Part of that is due to the relationship with Margarito, partly due to the friendly relationship with Top Rank.
They were already on the decline, but I know a lot of people who stopped looking at them as a respectable (or unbiased) news source after that. I occasionally read Kim's stuff these days, but usually fast forward to the side stories and "flurries." Not really a fan of anyone else's work on that site.
I get that. But that only underlines their extreme bias. They've rarely if ever shown the same benefit of the doubt for any other fighter outside of the SoCal circuit. Honestly, switch Margarito with Floyd and tell me they handle the subject the same way.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I for one cancelled my subscription and haven't been back to read much of anything there since then.
Yeah, that's pretty much always been the case with me...because that's where the "news" items usually are. I'd like to speak more about Maxboxing's coverage of the Margarito scandal, but I don't remember that much about it. Was the Hauser article on Margarito - in which he interviewed trainers and asked if they thought a fighter could not know about their gloves being loaded - also on Maxboxing?
I know I know, don't get me wrong, I know his name is mud, but relevant or not he doesn't seem to be as hated as he should. Even astute boxing fans like Hut Hut seem to be somewhat leniant on him (only recently has he conceded that logically yes, he probably did load his gloves against Cotto). He also got way more support from the Mexicans than he should have done against Pacquiao. I know the Mexicans are good, passionate, loyal fans, but fucking come on, use some discretion. I also haven't noticed much booing when he appears on screen or conferences or whatever. Honestly, I'm amazed he has the gall to even show his face, he should have just retired in shame after the Mosley fight.
I believe they did have some articles about it after the Hopkins fights. Was it even Maxboxing then, or was it HouseofBoxing or whatever it was?
Are you kidding? The Mexico/Phillipines rivalry is passionate enough some of Mexican fans probably wished he had wraps in that fight.
I guess it would've been different if he got caught after the fact - which would've been scary if he managed to land on Shane often enough. But there's a big difference between attempting a crime and actually pulling one off. My thing on past incidents - I don't question the possibility that the Shane fight wasn't the first time he and his trainer went down that route. But without proof, it's honestly speculation. Not to mention that Brother Naazim seems to be the only guy that catches this stuff - I guess because he looks for it going into every fight. So without proof, it's pretty much to definitively accuse him. People still do it - yet even with two separate coroner reports stating that Gatti committed suicide, some of those same people refuse THAT to be true.
You're more in the know than me, so you probably know more about Chico than me, but my impression and from people I've talked to, he seemed like a guy who was obviously troubled, but not that much of a bad guy deep down, and seemingly likeable. Like I said, his actions (and anyone else's similar actions) are not excusable, but IMO one incident of heat of the moment violence against a woman is more forgivable and understandable than premedidated sickness and lack of remorse a la Plasterito. Also, arguably more forgivable than less violent but repeated incidents like Floyd and other boxers, plus of course more violent and repeated like Valero. It probably seems odd that Corrales and Monzon are two of my favourite fighters, but I honestly don't like wifebeaters at all. I'm someone who treats women well. "You can ask any of my women, and they'll tell you, that's a man, that's one man I swear" :kidcool:
meanwhile according to Rafael's Twitter, Arum's claiming 200k+, possibly 250k. Of course he made similar claims about Pac-Diaz, which I think did about half of what he "projected." He was also off by 100k or so on a few other Pac PPV's (Morales III, Barrera II) and Cotto-Mosley.
I just watched the replay and I thought that Cotto looked real good in this fight. He was in total control from beginning to end. By the way I'm still trying to figure out where and how Mayorga hurt his hand? I'll Holla 5000
My 2 cents on one Miguel Cotto.... I finally caught this fight on the replay before the Bute fight. Cotto impressed me and looked very sharp. Mayorga was in about the best condition I have ever seen him except maybe years ago against six-heads and Forrest. I keep wondering what might have been if not for the the loss to Marg, now "cemented" into the annals of boxing history. Cotto has improved his defense and now does an excellent job slipping, ducking, and blocking punches. His offense is mixed and fluid. I see he finally uses the right hand proportionately, and the left hook looks great. Jab was excellent, mixed in some body shots, uppercuts, etc. Very nice. Despite commentator fluff (and Mike Tyson saying the pugilists were not really fighting), Cotto won all but maybe 2 rounds and beat the shit out of Mayorga. TKO was actually pretty much a KO as Mayorga was apparently so senseless he thought he hurt his hand when he was floored by a monster left hook right smack on the chin. It was odd. Two things I wanted to note. First, Cotto is not a 2 of 5 in the power category at 154. More like low 3's. Left hook maybe 3.5. But even that is not enough to dissuade good pressure fighters from pressing him at 154, and that leads to my second note. Cotto moves straight backwards too often, and he cannot fucking fight going backwards. When he retreats, he gets hit, period. Yeah, he is still seeing punches and moving enough to get out of the way sometimes, but as a whole he is 10 times more effective when he presses or when he goes toe-to-toe. He has GOT to either stop retreating straight backwards, or somehow work on watching for counter opportunities when he does (every now and then he'd throw a check hook or a good counter jab going backwards). I'd prefer he just move laterally more often and skip going backwards altogether. Can't the great Manny Steward work this out? For whatever reason, Cotto no longer has what I would call devastating, or "one-punch" KO power (despite the essentially one-punch TKO of Mayorga). I don't know if it's being at 154, or if he does not commit to the punches as he once did (like that hammer left hook to the body he used to throw), or if he is just getting older, but his ability to stop a pressing fighter is limited. Limited NOT by the inability to land punches - but by the efficacy of said punches. To his credit he did a fine job with Mayorga despite generally not being able to stop the pressure, but against a better fighter he may well find himself getting overwhelmed as he did against Margarito and to some extent against Pac. If you back Cotto up, you will hit him, and you will hurt him. And one more note to Cotto, Steward & pals - holding your right glove up to the right side of your head is NOT an effective defense against an opponent's right hand. You either slip your glove across to your left cheek or you roll your left shoulder up high enough to protect your tucked chin. This is not rocket science and it is a flaw that needs fixing. So as always, I wonder where Cotto goes from here. Having already lost a fight to Pac, I doubt anyone is interested in seeing a rematch, and I don't know it would turn out any different anyway. I don't want him to give Marg the rematch, fuck Marg. But I would watch such a fight if it transpired only in the hopes that this time around Cotto would punish Margarito brutally. I suppose the fight that makes the most sense right now is (unfortunately) Mayweather at 154 or maybe some catch weight. PBF probably sees Cotto as damaged goods and thus would be willing to take the fight, and Cotto looks pretty sharp at 154. I think Manny Steward is helping Cotto overall, and although PBF wins that fight I think it might be entertaining at this juncture. Cotto did not appear to tire at all in 12 rounds against Mayorga, and that is a very good sign in terms of his conditioning and comfort in this division. Otherwise what? Move to 160? Bad idea I think for Cotto. No way he bests Martinez there. I suppose he can keep fighting lesser challenges like Mayorga and Yuri Foreman, but unless he gambled all his money away I am not sure what that really gets him. I am convinced the Margarito fight took a chunk out of Cotto's career that he never got back. I'd personally like to see Cotto fight PBF at or around 154 now and go for broke. The unlikely win would be an astounding achievement for Cotto, and a loss probably means it's time to hang it up while still young, rich, and healthy.
Name 10 pro boxers that you're a fan of and I guarantee you at least 5 of them kicked the shit out of a woman at some point in their lives. And those are just the ones we know about.
Seeing as he fed Cotto to Pacman, why wouldn't he? There would be a lot of money in it. By the way, I've been telling you guys for ages Cotto isn't shot, I think people are gradually realising it. He might not be as sharp as he once was, but nothing about him is shot.
I know Arum likes to keep things in house, but really, surely he wouldn't be adverse to making that fight? Why wouldn't he unless Floyd asked for an absurd amount?
why wouldnt mayweather jr ask for an absurd amount? he's been receiving such amounts for his last few fights. arum has said many times that mayweather jr wants all the money
