Exactly. By the way the first KO he was actually up and on his feet before the ten count and could have been allowed to continue if the ref didn't feel LL couldn't continue. LL even protested the stoppage. Lewis chin wasn't the best in the world but it withstood some of the biggest hitters in the division and he had the defense to protect it.

I don't recall LL taking any criticism for the McCall rematch. That was basically a nonfight.

I do agree with you that Lewis would beat everybody right now. However the average title bouts of 1980s were not much better than they are now. The guys of 1970s, the Bonavenas, Ellises and Quarries wouldn't just be very competitive these days because the spot has developed

He was widely criticized (especially by American media) for not being able to take out a defenseless guy. Then again, Lewis also got crticized after the Grant fight..

I was just about to add this to my original post. I still think it was a premature stoppage. If memory serves, Lennox was standing up and berating the referee even before the ref had told him he was in no fit state to continue...

    What?

More dominant than 25 title defenses over 11 years by Louis?

More dominant than 20 title defenses over 8 years by Holmes?

And Tyson? Tyson defended the undisputed lineal title 2 times before being drilled by Douglas. And one of those defenses, Carl Williams, was a guy that the aforementioned Holmes beat years earlier.

Maybe my definition of domination is a bit skewed, but in my opinion Louis dominated an era, Marciano dominated an era, Holmes dominated an era, Lewis dominated an era. Wladimir is only getting started if he wants to run along side those guys.

Being the best heavyweight out there right now is like being the best looking guy in a room full of people with braces and glasses.

I am saying that Wlad has now started it. If he can keep this level up for some years, he will be up there with those guys. That is because he is more superior to his timers than Larry Holmes for example. Larry was the king of the hill but more often than people want to remember he had trouble in his fights or he didn't take on all comers. Same with Louis.

Seriously, I would love to hear about the top heavies that Holmes avoided between 78 and 85...

What a crock of shit. Please give me a list.

I wish we could be back in the first couple of years after Lewis retired, when John Ruiz ruled the heavyweight division with iron fist, easily disposing of pretenders like Rahman, Quitaly, etc......

Pinklon Thomas is the most obvious one. Also many wanted to see him fight Greg Page ad Michael Dokes or rematch Tim Witherspoon. I am not saying his resume was bad, it wasn't, and these guys did split victories, but it wasn't like the division had been empty behind Larry

Wlad is the best out today. No doubt. But to be even slightly talked about on this stage he has alot of ground to make up and alot of past to get out of the people's minds. Ross Purtiy, Corey Sanders, Brewster. Dominant champs don't get KO'd by guys like this. Its not like it was a one time thing, it was a pattern. And he's been on the canvas and almost out several more times. Wlad is good, but to call him great is very premature.
