Darren Barker is shite. Martinez is going to rip his head off.

he didn't do that last night, against a guy who has Yory Boy Campas defense compared to Mayweather

Martinez has essentially been deemed awesome on the strength of one fight (Williams II) ... before that, there was nothing to suggest this awesome fighting beast that you are seeing... a loss to Williams, an ugly win over the gutless, awful Cuntron and a win over a one-dimensional alchoholic

I know Floyd won't take the fight, that doesn't mean that if he could comfortably weigh 156 pounds or so that he couldn't make him miss all night and drill him with rights

martinez beat williams both times. the pavlik win was highly credible, and he remains the only guy to defeat pavlik and at middleweight. pavlik came to fight and was in good shape for that bout. he just lost.

mayweather jr would get knocked out by martinez. who is far too skilled to miss all night. you want to write him off due to one fight where he was flat and didnt have his timing down, yet still won by KO.

if it were easy to do what he does and didnt take any skill then more fighters would attempt it, considering how effective it has been.

How did Martinez get this great pfp rating? He beat Pavlik, who had been exposed to a greater or lesser extent by Hopkins, he beats Tall Paul who had DONE NOTHING, he beats.......Uhhhhh....no he didn't beat Margarito. He didn't even beat Cintron.

Pavliks pfp credentials should have been stripped once he lost to Hopkins, as it was Hopkins those pfp credentials stemmed from in the first place.

Yeah yeah same way be "beat" Williams "twice".

    Its BS.

Hopkins beat Pavlik, that should have removed Pavlik from the ratings when combined with his extended inactivity {RECENCY!!!!} through injury and his lack-luster showings once he did get around to fighting against so-so opposition.

You're one of the very best posters here, Ugo. And probably the most completely independent thinker.*kissy kissy*

Obviously disagree with nearly every word but having somebody able to pick out the logical counter points so expertly makes it worth logging on sometimes.

I actually felt sorry for barker when he was being interviewed after the fight. He did give it his all and had to fight hard to hold back the tears. He's alright.

I think there is some general overreaction to this performance, which was not Martinez' best yet he still won by KO. Some of you do need to step in a ring, it's not always that easy to just be better than the guy in front of you and that means you will take him out easily. When you analyse his wins - Martinez has some quality there. I thought he drew with Williams, but he avenged that blemish rather emphatically, dominant win over Pavlik is still a good win (not great), Dzinziruk was quality, and he did deserve to beat Cintron altho it was a tough fight. He deserves to be a top 5 P4P fighter, imo.

That being said you analyse his style and I agree with cdogg and Hut that Martinez being ranked a top 5P4P fighter (which I think he deserves to be ranked) isd a reflection of the poorer state that boxing is in right now and the downward trend over the past 5-10 years.

Floyd and Pac are light years better than martinez imo... if not for size those are not even competitive matches.... and i think Mayweather has a good chance against him regardless. I also think he beats Pacquiao.... clearly I have much more faith in Floyd than he does in himself.

Neil, do you think Ortiz was on the way to knocking Floyd out? I think it's a gross exaggeration to say that Martinez would "beat the shit outta Floyd." I don't think anyone can beat the shit out of floyd even if they manage to defeat him.

Martinez won every round and knocked the guy out. But the reaction from many is to go back, discredit Martinez's accomplishments, and declare he's not that good? With fans like this, no wonder the sport is doomed.

He lost about 2 rounds tops. It was a non-performance by Barker - the kind that's always going to make his opponent seem less than spectacular, but is never going to win him a fight.

And it's precisely the approach fighters will take when they know they can't win and the best they can hope for is to do better than expected.

What was so surprising to many here was how martinez struggled so much with such basic boxing. Martinez, many times himself, was boxing basic. A right, followed by a left and repeat. It's true that martinez does not have much variety to his game either, but his style is effective.

    He's very beatable.

Yep. Nobody is denying Martinez credit for the ending, even if it was a fortunate shot which hit a nerve behind the guys ear. Martinez had thrown lots of shots like it, into the gloves and finally found one which made a difference. Bottom line is he knocked out the Fabulous Baker Boy and thats all about it.

However, after the 4th round, Martinez was walking round, even on the cards, with a fat nose throwing lefts below the belt an shining Bakers gloves, with rather thick expression on his face.

Thats why I stopped doing any sort of scoring....the fight was entertainingly close and Martinez problems really were obvious.

Martinez had too much class and power to lose to a guy like Barker but 11 rounds vs a guy like Barker does not a pfp legend make. He didn't win every round, dominate or anything like it. He eventually closed the show against a tired and inexperienced foe, and he gets credit for that.
